Out and About

Saturday 17 October 2015

I actually wore a jacket at the beginning of this week when the weather was still nice'ish and pulled out one of my American Vintage Patherson jackets. It's one of those jackets which when you put it on, you feel good in it. The cut is flattering and the arms are slim cut but don't feel too tight. I'm really quite sold on it so I have no idea why I don't wear it more apart from I seem to go from summer to winter wear basically because I am so nesh.

A friend saw me at the school gates and said "Nice Jacket" and had a feel of it. "It's lovely - is it new?" "Newish" I replied in that I've had it a few months though it was the first time I'd worn it, so I guess that's kind of truthful :o)

And for moseying around shopping, I swapped out the boots for the Next felt skate pumps from last year. They're fleece lined too #bliss

As above but Next Skate Pumps (old) and Mulberry Bag (old)

And I have to say this has been one of my favourite outfits for a while. Shame I left it so late and the weather is too cold now to wear this ongoing. Brrr.

--------------------------------

Anyway, this is me having a play in the H&M changing rooms. Only a few pics but I think they had a drop of new stock this week.

This is a brilliant little viscose blouse for the price of £12.99, with a nice embroidered trim. Not too fussy and a simple pop it on style. I'm wearing a size 8 here though I am normally a ten. You can size down in this.

There were some new jumpers in .... first up is this black and white mix one. I quite liked the feel of this one as it is a cotton mix one which I find usually wash quite well. I'm wearing a size small in this and I think it's on the right side of slouchy. Its not the most exciting of jumpers but it will probably make a good wardrobe staple. It's the kind of jumper I reach for and I'm not precious about. Pop a black shirt underneath and some leather/pleather leggings to jazz it up a bit. Footwear - your choice.

And then there is the mohair mix looking one (£49.99), I didn't check the composition. I bought a very similar jumper last year in grey which had a mock shirt tail attached which sounds strange but looks better than you think. I didn't keep it as I thought it was too long for me. They brought it back out in a black this year but no pic available as the black didn't show up well. Anyway, this grey jumper is very similar except no mock shirt tail and with big dolman type sleeves.

And I've already had a discussion about this one on Instagram with a few people. This jumper comes in three different colour ways, this natural white colour, pale grey and charcoal grey. All nice in their own way. I just looked online and this natural white colour seems to have just sold out online but the charcoal one is still available! It's very soft and an acrylic cotton mix (a bit cotton wool like in feel and texture). I really liked the neckline on this as it's not tight and therefore doesn't give me a double chin which most rollneck/poloneck jumpers tend to do if they are tight around the neck.

One thing to note - check the side seams - one jumper which I picked up was very bad. However, the rest appeared to be okay. Just something to be aware of.

And last but not least in H&M. I tried a hat. For the heck of it. I was tempted to buy it to park it with the other hats that I don't wear but thought better of it.

Me in my own get up and a pure new wool trilby (£19.99).

So a short and sweet try on. Nothing to break the bank or excite the fashion loins too much but a few little hardworking gems which might be worth a look at.

Last Note :

This roll neck jumper is a lovely soft cotton rather than an itchy wool. It's worth a look and you can take your pick from navy or pale grey. It fits true to size (size small was perfect on me) and is not too long in the body (no booty cover in this).

I particularly love the way they paired the navy one with grey trousers.

  1. I like that embroidered blouse on you. Also thank you for doing these "try-on" posts...I feel like you basically covered what I would have looked for in those stores anyway.

    1. I go for very basic pieces which don't shout a lot. That way, the pieces have a bit more longevity to them and I seem to home in on the same old same old so unless you like that kind of thing, it's not that much help. Some people are great and try on all manner of things, I just try what I think I would like myself.

    1. I wish I'd kept the grey version from last year now. It had tighter sleeves which suited me more. Be looking forward to seeing it when it cools off over where you are. Can't be long now!

  3. Oh I love you in the mohair jumper and the winter white one. Gorgeous! You so suit a trilby too. I wish I could wear hats :-( lying the jacket too, Sue. You should wear it more often. Lynne xx

    1. The winter white one is lovely and I did bring it home but I had to return it as it had a tiny "blemish" on the back - it was a part of the wool rather than a stain but it bugged me. Sometimes I wish I wasn't so picky and just got on with it. And the grey mohair one is really nice too but I just would have preferred slimmer sleeves. And as for the hat, I really liked it but would I have worn it? Probably not.

  4. You make that H&M blouse look so much more expensive than it is. I saw it in store this week, and I would have walked right past it tbh. I am in awe of your ability to spot bargains and make them look classy :-D xx

    1. It's part of their new promotional drop which is why it's at the front of store. But it did catch my eye and thank you for saying I make it look more expensive - that's some feat considering it has creases down the front. And I think I just like spotting nice things when I can and saving some money - it's not like the good old days when we were working ;o)

  5. This is so useful - H&M in Dublin is really not inviting at all, but now that I know whats good, I can go in. That hat is fab on you - I wear glasses so feel adding a hat is just too much stuff around my face, but you should wear that one, I would if I could!

    1. Oh don't dismiss the hat based on that. My friend Marlene wears glasses and a hat and she does it partly to keep her glasses dry in the rain but it certainly doesn't look busy on her. And some of the H&M stores are not that good to go through. I have a range of three and I have a personal favourite as it seems better laid out and easier to navigate for me. Or rather, I know where they keep the stuff I'm interested in. I tend to ignore the Divided stuff - it's a bit more youthful so I'm not wondering why everything skirt like looks like a belt ;o)

  6. I have a drawer RAMMED with winter jumpers but can never resist more when the season change. I've my eye on the flecked number, and you look absolutely gorgeous in the trilby. I hope you purchased... x

    1. The flecked one - the first jumper? I think I might end up with that one - I like really practical stuff for everyday round the house and which I can stick a heat tech vest on underneath now that it's starting to get colder. I am such a nesh thing. I also think it's the easiest thing to look after and boy I've just realised how old do I sound saying that! Oh yes ... the trilby never made it home with me.

  7. Love your American vintage blazer Sue...such a useful jacket to put your hands on for this time of year, great for layering! You can't beat H&M for a few knitwear bargains can you? Glad you bagged the sweater, it looks so lovely and cosy on you! Should have got the hat too....it so suits you! xx

    1. I do like their bargains. I had to take the natural white one back as I spotted a defect in the wool and haven't had time to repurchase which I think I might do actually - but only after I've had a good rummage through the rails.

      And no - no hat!

  8. Right! That's me off to H&M this evening! It's so frustrating that they don't do an online service to Ireland. It really is time that they caught up with every other retailer :(

    1. You won't last 2 minutes in there Helen. You need a personal shopper who takes you right to the things she thinks you will like. Probably to the white/cream jacket section ;o)

  9. Love a trying on post - you are so helpful! That jacket is just so perfect...I am popping over to check that out. I would pretend it is a cardy and wear it constantly! Also adore the white top - looks so expensive on you. One question - did the skaters come with fleecy lining???? If yes, please can you find some more and let me know?! Meg xx

    1. I don't mind doing the trying on sessions and writing about it but usually I don't try on enough things to warrant a post. The American Vintage jackets are lovely - very plain styling and my only gripe or maybe it's a good thing is that it doesn't have any pockets but that's just me being used to jamming my hands in every pocket available. And I should wear them more as a cardigan like you say ... maybe I will!

And fleece lined skate pumps - I will keep an eye out for you. Or you could just buy some sheepskin liners and put them in yourself. Sorted!

  10. I am a big fan of American Vintage, I have a summer version of your jacket/cardi in a natural colour which I love, and lots of their t-shirts which are the softest to wear, but they do unfortunately go into holes if not careful! You are a perfect hat model Sue, you should definitely get it! Helen xx

    1. It's good to know that about the tees. I have washed the Jacksonville tee and it seems to have come out fine - no holes yet! But the jacket is a lovely style and shape for me - glad you think so too.
