Respect

Friday 6 December 2013

It's maths week and I was going to help out in Ben's class with their math's treasure hunt and they had asked for volunteers. I turned up ... on the wrong day. Ho hum. I obviously wasn't listening or paying attention when the teacher was talking :o(  But not wanting to waste a resource, the school allocated me to George's class instead. Lots of very small people with glue and glitter in abundance making Christmas decorations. Oh! Had I anticipated some glue sticks and paint action, I would not have worn this.

Uniqlo cashmere cardigan, French Connection dress, Medwind Boots

Cashmere cardigans and sticky fingers - not a match made in heaven I can tell you. When they said "go get some aprons" I thought "phew!" and then realised they meant for the small people and not me :o(  Instead I played a bit of glue hands dodgeball and nearly got stabbed in the process with a pair of safety scissors by the child loitering behind my shoulder.

Anyway, this was my take on a "teaching assistant" type outfit. I was trying to blend in and I also thought I'd leave the distressed boyfriend jeans at home because I know what my small people are like with things like this. They look at things like distressed jeans and say "Why do you have holes in your jeans?" My usual response is "Because I am poor and I can't afford new jeans - tell daddy to buy mummy some new jeans". George (4) still buys it though lately, Ben has started with the quizzical "I'm not sure I totally believe you" look and I think he knows I'm taking the proverbial P :o)

So that's me in a dress for the first time since the summer and as it has been worn, it gets to stay in my wardrobe another year. It's last outing was for my girls Christmas do seen here. The tights (how exciting!) are 80 denier boot tights from Primark last year and are quite interesting as the foot area is a little more substantial and sock like to make wearing a little bit more pleasant. And who's seen the fur lined tights they've done this year? I bought a pair so I could sneak them on under a pair of jeans when hanging around being a soccer mom because unless you have legs like Bambi, they make your legs look really bad. By the way, they are very "tight" (no pun intended) around the waistband - just letting you know for all those who want to dash out and get a pair because furry lined tights sound awesome right?

Oh and the title "Respect". BIG respect to the teachers - they have so much patience and such fabulous negotiating skills with small people - think of the wars which could have been avoided if the world's  political leaders could have had a day session in nursery school. It's not a job for me as the OCD part comes out to the fore. I started getting stressed by the mess on the table when I was relegated to cutting shapes out of Christmas cards to make "bauble like" decorations. I found an old cereal box  and a minion (small child) who had taken a shine to me and together we sought to make the classroom a better place i.e. I told him to put all the little bits of card he could find on the floor (he was on floor duty) and to put them in the box.

Cunning eh?

Last note.

  • I was going to add a link to the grey Uniqlo cashmere cardigan but the one they have this year is a pretty vile grey so I can't recommend. It's a really "flat" colour for some reason. But I found a nice alternative from Woolovers which is very similar in style in cashmere and merino. It's better than mine in that it has pockets and you know how I lurrrve pockets.

  • I had a look on the French Connection site to see what this year's version of my dress looked like and do you know what? This is the year, they've stopped doing this style. They used to throw out this design in a different print from season to season and I can understand why - it's the perfect flattering throw it on dress and nips you in in the right places. However this one caught my eye!

(Anybody want to invite me to a wedding so I can wear this?)

Love, love, love, love! Gosh - wear a dress for a day and it's made me go all soft. Pah!

  1. Haha, I am terrible at listening and it is my biggest fear that I'll turn up somewhere a day early or late. You look great in this outfit-luckily it avoided glue and glittery little hands. Kids always know when you're trying to look nice and have to come wipe their nose on your leg or something!

    1. It's not the first time I've done this kind of thing. I get it in my head that something is happening on a certain day, turn up and then get told it's the next day (did that for the dentist this year). The irony is that I'm always telling my boys off for not paying attention. Pot Kettle :o)

  3. You look 'da bomb' in this outfit Sue!! That is the perfect way to style a dress in Winter!! Love it!

I discovered Primark's fleece lined tights last Winter which were an absolute winner.....however I shall now be slipping into Primark on my way home tonight in hope I can track down the fur lined ones! Thanks for the tip off x

    1. Did you manage to find the furry tights? I have to say, I actually prefer the fleece lined ones - they feel a bit nicer if you're trying to wear them under anything. The fleece lined tights could be treated as leggings though as they are thick enough.

And it wasn't as bad as I thought, wearing a dress in the winter. Helps that the school was nicely heated :o)

  4. When my younger cousins were smaller I tried to see for how long I could get away with making chores into games. That bit about the kid on floor duty cracked me up. Glad to know you survived and are intact!

    1. I think I would have gone for one of the aprons if it had fitted me but they are teeny weeny. As are the chairs - I get a little nervous every time I sit on a small person's chair. Have you seen how small they are these days?

  6. Love the dress with the cardi Sue - you look very 'teacher's assistant'. I have great admiration for the teachers too - my good friend is a teachers assistant and is so patient and level headed - I could never do such a demanding job - far too short tempered! The holes in jeans talk with small people has amused me greatly! :)

    1. No it's not a job for me either but I've seen how much they do and what they can be up against and so I've offered to help out again. Once more in to the breach .... with no cashmere cardis I hasten to add.

  8. It's the perfect outfit for a day in school but not a day with glitter! I would have been nervous wearing such a lovely cashmere cardi but I would have enjoyed all the fun. Glue, glitter, Christmas decorations - I love all that but I know most of my glitter would have beeen on the floor in no time!

    1. I quite enjoy all the crafty stuff - it's just the mess that I can't handle. I'm not even that tidy a person but it seems to bring out a strange OCD quality that I didn't know I had. Like when you have to "re-arrange" the Christmas tree after the small people have "decorated" it and become a mad cleaning lady hovering with a dust pan and brush at the ready. Can't explain it.

    1. Yes, unbelievably I do actually have a pair of legs lurking somewhere. And I actually love dresses - I just don't like wearing them.

I do need to have a look at that dress in real life - it is damned nice :o)

    1. I don't do the dress thing very often - I just don't find them that practical. Now if I was in an office or something, that might be a different thing altogether. And as for the little aprons - I'm not adverse to borrowing my boys' when I can't find mine. I have to admit, I'm a bit of a pinny wearer.

  11. Oh my word, don't you look professional? Love the cardi; in fact the whole combination looks very stylish and comfortable. But can I just say, that the idea of furry lined tights actually makes my toes curl in horror! I cannot imagine anything worse! The heat! Oh dear God, the heat! And the potential itch factor. Aaarrggh!

    1. I have to be honest - the furry lined tights are not as good as the fleece lined ones. I don't think they are as comfortable or as warm. But I have tried and tested and know which to buy in future. But yes, they would be torture for you. Absolute itching torture.

And I'm not sure I look professional - don't you think the cardi kills the professional bit a little?

  14. Looking fab as always Sue. I really like that new FCUK dress you've picked out, I wonder how sheer the fabric is, reckon you'd get away with a little black cardi and black tights for Winter?? I want a Summer dress to wear now!!!x

    1. I've not seen it in real life but I love the print and the colours. I'd definitely consider getting that if it cropped up in the sales with a reasonable discount. I have so little use for dresses, it would be criminal to imprison it in my wardrobe.

  15. Like how you wore the dress here. I need a pair of slick boots like yours too. Ah..no amount of money can make me work as a teacher ever again. I have total respect for the teachers in LL's school.
