The Girl in the Ruby Slippers

Monday, 22 October 2012

I have been bewitched by a pair of ruby slippers. These are not just any pair of ruby slippers but ruby slippers with jewels and feathers.

For those who have followed my blog for a little while, you will know that I'm not the girliest of girls, I don't swan around in floaty dresses and do pretty pretty. I don't do fluff bunnies and pastel pink. And I most certainly do not do jewel encrusted slippers ... with feathers. What happened?  Did someone hit me over the head with some jewel encrusted slippers ... with feathers?

Nah - I've just been blog hopping again and been totally entranced by Jamie Lee's footwear from Mademois-elle or more specifically her little pairs of ballet pumps. I remember thinking how extremely girly the silver Witchery ones were that she wore - they were nothing like anything I had in my wardrobe.

I was even more entranced by her Miu Miu jewelled ones - I worship at the altar of these.

And although I don't choose to wear cats on my feet, I can't help being charmed by the Charlotte Olympia Kitten flats she has.

I think I am even charmed enough to want a pair so it is only good and right that (1) you can't get them for love and money and (2) I can't afford them anyway. What I'm trying to say is this girl has rocking flat footwear. Oh yes and boy do I have boring shoes!

But no longer. I have rectified this wardrobe malfunction and succumbed to these little beauties ... for now. My dilemma is how will I wear them and what will I wear them with? I have no idea but I am very happy just looking and smiling at them indulgently for now. Like Dorothy* about to set off on her adventure and not knowing where it will take her and what adventures she will have in her ruby slippers, we shall take each day of the return period as it comes before making that decision on whether these are keepers. If I do then I shall become the "Girl in the Ruby Slippers" ...... on the school run.

Total girly frou frou.

Where can we get these magical slippers ... where do you think? Net a Porter? Zara? Topshop? Err no. They are from Matalan* £12.  Bargain.

  • Did you know that Dorothy from Wizard of Oz originally had silver shoes? It was just as well with the advent of technicolour they decided to make the most and give her the iconic ruby red slippers which we have come to know. Silver shoes just wouldn't have cut the mustard.

  • Matalan. The shoes are not showing on the website at last look but they are in store. They also come in black and leopard. Cool.

  • What are the chances of me keeping these and doing a school run in them? Slim or very slim?  It's funny how during the course of writing a post, one can suddenly fall out of love. Thank goodness for return policies.

  • What are the chances of me going for any of these instead? Cleaner lines, lovely filigree toecap detail and more sensible for me. Classic shape, black but with a little interest.

Red Ruby vs Black Filigree.  Which would you choose?

Maybe I'll just have a look in the wardrobe instead and be done with.  All this looking for pretty pumps is proving to be hard work.

Actually, I think I'm just going to wear my boots instead.  The weather's turning cold anyway.

    1. I probably will end up in my boots. Sometimes I just go off on one and decide that I want something out of the norm and then realise it's not me. But it's good to go off on one every now and then ... you learn something new about yourself or you reaffirm what you already know ... that is, you have a tendency to boring footwear. Strange, I wasn't always like this.

  3. I'm not all that girly girl either but if you're going on down on the blingy flats, definitely go for the brightest & most glitzy ones :P I bought a pair of Zanotti bling bling flats and often get stopped by strangers. They're definitely more fun than the rest my rather staidly and monochromatic shoes.

    1. Oh I forgot - I bought some glitter sandals over the summer! I do have bling footwear! All is not lost! But it's winter now - what's a girl to wear?

    1. They are fun but they are so un-me. To be honest, I quite fancy a pair of Bass Weejun loafers like the pair I had when I was 16. I think they may be the ones to take me out of a shoe rut but my most people's standards, they would be beyond boring. J W Anderson for Topshop have a pair in at the moment which I tried and was quite taken with. Seeing as how I got my first pair about 20+ years ago and they've come back in, it would be an investment to get a pair and see if they are come back round again in another 20 years time or will I be in my orthopaedics by then?

  5. I can see 17th century Venetian ladies lounging around wearing these - perhaps even Lord Byron himself, who was notorious for indulging his feminine side. Which we all have to, every now and again.

They look really nice with the turned up jeans here, so I definitely vote for keeping them. Perhaps purchase the filigree pair too, if you're feeling frisky!

(and make the most of the temporary cessation of rainfall! IT SHALL RETURN!) x

    1. I've seen the filigree ones now and dislike them. They lacked a certain something in real life. So back to browsing again. The ruby ones are cute but I think they will sit in my wardrobe forever smiling at me every time I open the doors and then cry as I close the doors on them again as they are overlooked in favour of some other pair. Oh gosh, I make that sound so sad don't I?

I think I need something a little harder wearing. It's good to have whims - I'm good at being inconsistent.

  7. OMG the filigree ones are SO nice! I hope House of Fraser ships here.. ;)

Also your 12 pound bargain from Matalan looks way more expensive than it is, always a triumph for me when I find these kind of deals so you should be proud. Statement shoes for me are great for when you have those 'nothing to wear' days, I usually throw on a pair of leggings and a sweater and some spikey flats and good to go!

    1. I could see you in the filigree ones definitely. They did nothing for me when I saw them which was such a shame as I was really hoping they were the new sassy shoes for me. I've also been looking at lots of spiky flats, some more spiky than others and positively scary. Zara have got a nice green camo pony pair with studs on which is just lovely - could they have incorporated any more in their design, camo + hair + studs + current slipper shape. But it all works beautifully.

    1. Yes - thank you for the inspiriation. But it's really bad for the old purse springs!

And your heels are divine too but luckily I have even less call for those than glittery pumps!

    1. The black ones are little more edgy aren't they? The red ones are definitely on the girly side but they are a total bargain. But I may save my pennies and carry on the search.

Thank you for popping past and commenting.
