Mad Dandy

Saturday, 20 October 2012
I had half an hour spare this afternoon. Let's see what we can throw in the bag today and what comes out.

Let's start with a yellow stripy breton top and a pair of black jeans.

And a pair of leopard print shoes.

So far so good and kind of clean and classic .....

Let's add a floral Liberty Varuna wool scarf.

Let's lose the floral Liberty scarf - it's so big, I can't tie it. Lets take the old favourite, the black paisley scarf instead. That's good - I can tie this one.

Bit nippy outside - we need a coat.  Let's take this Topshop check tweedy one.

Give it all a bit of stir and a bit of a tweak and hey presto!

Mad Dandy. This is one of those outfits where I think they say "looks better in real life". Honest.

This is also one of those outfits which my friends wind me up about and say only Sue would put that combo together.  Stripes, leopard, paisley and checks.  But I think it works - because the yellow in the stripy top picks out the yellowy camel tones in the shoes, which also have black in them which works with the paisley scarf which has nearly every colour under the sun in it but is predominantly black which then goes with the jeans and the brown in the shoes goes with the brown check on the coat and the grey of the coat? Well grey is just a neutral anyway ... isn't it?

Shame I couldn't tie the scarf but honestly - it is huuuuuuge! But I think it would have worked as well.

I can't resist a Liberty print.  Even one this big!

Tablecloth anyone?

Anyway, who thinks this outfit is a pattern clash? Or a pattern compliment?

    1. I love the Liberty scarf - I just can't wear it without having a fight with it first.

Have a good weekend too Anne!

    1. Strangely enough, it does, I think. I was wondering if I could convince other people I wasn't totally mad that's all.

  3. You're right, the whole combination works. I tend to wear massive Hermes shawls which I just throw on. I know I'm supposed to fold them diagonally and then somehow drape the shawls over my shoulders. Ack, too much work! As long as the shawl stays on and I'm warm, it's fine by me!

    1. The Liberty scarf is just too big! Actually big is not the problem- it's the how fine the wool is and this is not fine and is also quite a strong fabric. If it was a fine gauze like fabric, I would be wearing this every day as I love the colours on this scarf. But it's a lesson to learn.

  7. I love it when women experiment with clothes and add some colour! All things work together indeed, and the liberty scarf, where did you get it from? Gorgeous!

    1. I always do a search on Ebay to look for Liberty things - I have a real soft spot for this "Brand". Go and do a hunt on 'Liberty scarf' and see what they have - I'm sure there will be something to please.

  8. I really love the print combinations Sue. Who can resist a little touch of leopard and that scarf is so gorgeous! I hadn't thought to search for 'liberty' before so thanks for the tip. I need to find myself one now :)

I really enjoy random prints/colours put together and I like how you've done is subtely without it being over the top crazy. Those just make my eyes hurt!

    1. Love Liberty stuff and love the store in London too. They have some lovely peacock feather designs for something which is not so regularly seen these days and which is what I think is nice. We have regular and we have Liberty! But if you pick a Varuna wool - it's quite strong and doesn't tie easily - almost springy in texture - you have been warned! But they have some lovely ones on the Liberty website too. I'm sure there will be something there to tickle your fancy.

And yes - I'm not good on the big bold pattern clashes. I tried to get with it this year and bought a bold floral blouse ... almost de-rigeur blogger style. I took it back and put my fashion tail between my legs. It scared me.

  9. I love your top and shoes but I'm afraid when it comes to clashing prints and patterns - I'm a complete chicken.

  10. Loving your Mad Dandy look and you also look comfortable and effortless too, which usually seems to be the talent that belongs to the French. I love clash but like Joanne I can't pull it off, not sure why....

  12. Mad dandy? Now I AM reminded of Lord Byron!

Lovely arm touches here, the scarf and shoes and mellow stripes. You always seem to locate the best looking bretons, it isn't fair. Mine always wind up either too thin or too boxy so I am temporarily giving up!

    2. Buy enough bretons and there will be a few good ones in there amongst them all! I love this Jack Wills one - I don't think it was popular probably because of the colour as it went in to their mid-season sale quite early compared to the others but I loved it at first sight and bought it there and then. The ones they did this year were a bit pants colourwise. I hope they do better ones next year.

    1. Hi- my little leopard slippers were from Tescos way back in April. They were £8 at the time as I had 20% off and I thought it would be a good cheap way to test the waters with "slippers" to see if I got on with them. They don't seem to have them online anymore as I just went to have a look for you but I found these which are pretty close :

I'm not sure if they have Select in Ireland or if they ship to Ireland but you could always check :o)

      Hope that helps.
