Okay - to some people this is very wrong but to me this is very right.
Peanut butter and condensed milk on toast. And no I'm not pregnant again.
Try it before you mock it. The Grumps said it was dreadful but gradually over the years, when I've made a piece, he's started sneaking the odd bite .... and he doesn't pull the same retching faces that he used to (yes - you do - if you're reading this).
It might seem very strange but actually it's less strange than you think - what's so different about this from peanut butter and jam (jelly to those American type folk out there - and which confused me terribly for years as I tried to work out why anyone would want to put some wibble wobble jelly on their toast)?
In Hong Kong, the street vendors sell delicious egg waffles and they put peanut butter sauce on them with a dash of sugar. It's yum. And fattening. I know because I've eaten lots of them. My sister and I, when we find one of these vendors, huddle together egging each other on to buy a portion ... followed by a second portion because one portion is not enough when something is this delicious. So it is a kind of tried, tested and accepted recipe actually.
Now bananas on toast ... to me - that's weird. What weird combos do you do?
It's weird - I'll give you that...but I have a sneaking suspicion that I would LOVE it! My go to snack is peanut butter on toast with a sprinkle of salt on top...Mr School Gate Style gets that face when I make it. :) x
ReplyDeleteWith salt ... I've never heard of that one. Is it a bit like the Scottish having salt on their porridge or having salted popcorn instead of sweet? Very peculiar (err I just thought, I have no room to speak).
DeleteMr SG - he'll come round to it ... eventually.
Definitely a strange combination but I'm a huge condensed milk fan so I don't believe that anything would taste bad with it :) I can imagine it is quite tasty. Definitely going to give this a go.

Can be strangely addictive. Go on - I dare you.
DeleteOh, I like the idea of this :) Will try!
ReplyDeleteI personally like Nutella and peanut butter on toast (white bread)... it's like a Reece's peanut butter cup on bread!
My BF is the king of odd combinations - whenever he makes a sandwich he manages to use everything that's in the fridge including all condiments :)
Very scared - trying to imagine a jam and mayo combo sarnie thing going on here. It doesn't bear thinking about.
DeleteEw, nooooo! But then I can't even get my head around the idea of peanut butter and jelly (jam) together. Too weird for me, I'm afraid :(
ReplyDeleteToast and butter for you then?
DeleteThe most I would put on my toast is orange marmalade, although I did buy a pot of apricot jam by mistake and now love it on mine in the mornings!!
ReplyDelete~Anne
Marmalade only when it has no bits in it or else I spend all my time picking the bits out. And strawberry jam only (no other. Hartleys at that).
DeleteI don't get bananas on toast either! The first time I saw it on my toast, I gagged and promptly threw up. Hah! I remember seeing friends sprinkle sugar over their thickly buttered toast. Oh, and condensed milk over toast as well. It's a very Asian thing :P
ReplyDeleteJust condensed milk on toast is good too.
DeleteBananas - yack. Unless in banoffee pie or McDonalds Banana milkshake. I did try to make a banana cake once - it was a brick. Me and baking do not go together (except in the case of chocolate brownies).
I love Marmite but when I have marmite on toast, I dip it into a hot cup of tea ha ha! My kids and OH think it is disgusting but I have done it since I was a teen when a lady I used to babysit for was doing it at breakfast one morning after I had stayed the night looking after her little boy!
ReplyDeleteOh no - is that tea with milk and sugar in it? In which case - you beat me for weirdness.
DeleteThat combo actually sounds AMAZING. I love condensed milk so this sounds like the perfect dessert, I'm going to try it!
ReplyDeleteThere's no going back. If you find you like it - you'll be addicted!
Deletewow... that's a powerful and extremely light combination! :) I'm afraid of trying it because I'm almost sure I'll like it. I've a giant sweet tooth and I love peanut butter and condensed milk...
ReplyDeleteThose HK egg waffles sound delicious too. I went to HK last year during my honeymoon (loved it. wouldn't mind moving there for a period) but don't remember seeing them... well, there are loads of great stuff to eat there anyway.
You can't do anything but shop and eat there! As we have a family flat there, it's not a typical holiday for us - we are usually just "visiting". I couldn't live there to be honest - I'm not sure about the lack of social niceties - I've been here too long - I like the British ever so polite queueing system. In Hong Kong, it's everyone for themselves, young vs old and elbows at the ready.
Deletethe worst combination on toast I've ever seen is very popular in this country - chips on toast! How can one eat that? My boyfriend does it...
ReplyDeleteI love everything with condensed milk! In Russia when at some point we had basically nothing in shops, including sugar, we still had condensed milk and used it in everything.
Peanut butter as well - I might try it!
I've heard of chip butties but not chips on toast. I don't like chip butties and I'm sure I won't like chips on toast either - that's just too much of a carb fest.
DeleteTry the peanut butter and condensed milk on toast. You'll love it. My friend saw me eating it one day and looked thoroughly bemused by it all and then tried a bite. Next time I saw her she told me she'd eaten her way through a jar of peanut butter and a bottle of the condensed milk!
