New Year, New Beginnings.

Saturday 10 January 2015

Happy new year everyone.

Look at that above. New cup, new diary and a bit of fruit.

Well the cup is mine but the diary is the big boy's and the fruit has now been devoured. Yes, new year, new good intentions.

Basically on New Years Eve, I reached saturation point. I was a poisoned pup. Not a morsel more could pass my lips. I couldn't even manage the New Year celebratory Champagne - not even a tiny sip. If I had, I might have exploded. It was that bad.

So I have calmed down. And since January 1st, I've only had 2 chocolates. And a lot more fruit and I've been salivating over people's Instagram food feeds. The Grumps laughed at me the other night as I sat in bed grumbling about how hungry I was whilst flitting through photos of nice food complaining about how I was starving which was interrupted every now and then with "that looks amazing". It must have been bad because he even asked me the next morning if I'd got up in the night to satisfy my food cravings. No. I didn't. I was fast asleep dreaming of Byron Burgers.

But nearly 10 days in to the new year, I am feeling a little better. The belly bloat has subsided thought the girth is still there and I have taken to standing on the scales again. I haven't actually been on a pair of scales for more than a year and I was masochistic enough to go and stand on them just to see how much I'd put on. I prayed for good news and didn't get it.

So I am eating better and cutting out naughty snacks. And double breakfasts. I used to have breakfast at 7am with the boys and then at 9.30 after the school run. Every little bit of abstinence helps. And I'm getting to grips with advocados mashed on toast with poached eggs and the such like (I blame Instagram) and hoping this works for me ... for at least the month of January till I get bored. I'm afraid I'm not getting on the Nutribullet bandwagon like so many - I need to chew.

So what are you peeps up to? New beginnings for you too?

  1. I feel appalling. I fasted, twice, this week and reduced my intake of sugary/crispy delights and I can honestly say I feel worse than when I was swigging sherry, at 11 in the morning, and cramming salted cashews in my face! I really need to loose some belly fat and bottom spread as I have a ski trip on the horizon. I haven't a hope in hell of fitting into my white ski pants. I will plod on, try and reduce my consumption of, basically, foodstuffs and drink more water. :0) xx Happy New Year Sue.

    1. Well I didn't think I'd eaten that much leading up to Christmas but I think my body reached saturation point and I had to just stop - it was weird. I don't feel as bloated now which is a blessing but I'm a long way off from where I'd like to be. I think it's big jumpers until then :(

And yep - I'm missing some of the sugary/crispy delights too - January is pants.

  2. Good on you, Sue. I too love food, as you know from my Instagram pics! Believe it or not, despite the photos, I do eat pretty well. For me, the main thing is less wine. I drank every day over Christmas and I'm enjoying abstaining now. I am having a green smoothie every day for breakfast (though I've not bought the nutribullet, just using my old hand blender) and I'm loving them. Even hubby is in on it! I've always drunk tonnes of water and I'm still doing that and I enjoy lots of dog walks so those will continue (though I think I'm a bit addicted to the health app on my iPhone which tells me how many steps I've done each day and I'm constantly trying to do more). The problem is its my 40th in a few days so it'll all start again :-( wish me luck! Lynne xx

    1. Yes, I know how you love your food and a glass of the old vino but Rosie will be helping you keep off those pounds - sometimes I think I'd have a dog just to make me exercise ... and then I think no.

And I'm not sure I get the nutribullet thing exactly - I'm not sure if the smoothies are a meal replacement or what? I think I'd just make the smoothie and then eat my main meal too. Which might defeat the object?

And how exciting - 40th soon! Let the merriment commence ....

  3. For me the only thing that does it is not having anything ready to eat in the house at all. If I'm really hungry I need to cook it. Then it's laziness vs. hunger and may the best (heavyweight) win!

    1. I do that as well. The one good thing about me is that if I don't like what there is on offer (snack wise) - I don't touch it. I won't eat something I don't like for the sake of it so I can do without. I was stood in the bakery aisle in the supermarket thinking about buying the boys some mini chocolate muffins and I stopped myself as I know I'm prone to sneaking the odd one. Polish halo.

  4. The big difference is that you wanted to stop ... I really didn't want to! But I did .. and like you I've been grumbling my way through healthy eating and yeesh! I've even joined a gym. Time will tell ...

    1. No ... I had to stop. My body said "NOOOOOO!" and my jeans went "ARGHGHGHGH".

But a gym is a step too far for me and besides which I've been banned from joining them by the Grumps because I only ever manage to go for two sessions after I've paid a fortune to join. He knows me well.

  5. I know what you mean Sue about getting to the point of no more, but it's so hard to go to the complete opposite of what we have all been doing, especially with so many chocs and Xmas cake still in the tin! But I am trying....honestly! Tried to up the exercise stakes, and as you know Ive hurt my back!, So ,I am a big fan of the clean and lean diet, so trying to stick to that. Good luck with your's. Hey we could do a bloggers support group for recovering xmas overeaters? xx Helen

    1. I have Christmas cake which has not been touched (by me) ... purely for the reason that I don't like the stuff so that's good. I have biscuit tins unopened and I refuse to open them - I will save them for when the boys have friends around and then I will offer them out. And chocs - I can pretty much take or leave anyway. But I do like the odd packet of crisps - I'm a savoury girl.

And the clean and lean diet? I've tried not to bandy the word diet around too much and use "healthier eating" as the word diet tends to send me in to a desperate eating frenzy. I hear the 5:2 diet is good - I read the book ... and that's it, I didn't do it. Two days of craving food - it could all turn nasty.

  6. Thing is Sue, I've been doing this no alcohol, healthy eating malarkey since 1st Jan and I don't feel any different. Not at all. My jeans are still tight, my complexion is the same and I'm thoroughly miserable. I keep thinking I'll wake up tomorrow and be a transformed woman!!!!

    1. You're right - everything looks and fits the same still for me too. Except I don't quite feel like I'm on the verge of popping. And I get hungry more often. I'm waiting for my metamorphosis too.

  7. We are all on a eat healthy phase at work so are driving each other on! I feel better for it - teachers staff rooms are usually full of sweet treats and biscuits so we've banned them. I love smoothies - fits in well with the eat clean and lean stuff, but whether it will help shift the Ilbs time will tell! Ive been grumbling too......

    1. That's exactly what you need - a support group. Rather than the devilishly skinny woman who keeps coming in to the staff room bearing biscuits saying "just one won't hurt".

And I like smoothies ... but not that much :(

  8. I think most people feel like this after the Christmas/New Year excesses plus January is a pretty dull & depressing month which doesn't help! I usually eat pretty well & run a lot too, but this all went to pot over the hols so I've dragged my sorry behind back to pounding the pavement this week & it has hurt, but I do feel better for it! x

    1. Ah but you got back there and that first jog is the hardest. I started off with really good intentions this week and did a bit more walking on the school run when it was dry and there wasn't a force 10 gale blowing us all over the pavements. I do find that if I'm busy or out of the house, I don't think about eating. So that will be my plan - to get busier and I'm starting off by doing a days volunteering with the school on Monday by going down to the woods with them. Shame I forgot to check the weather forecast - it's raining :(

  9. I just decided to get back to cooking everyday from scratch and keeping with healthy options. I became lazy and would grab the easiest things to cook (and keep the kids happy). So, Im back to lots of veg and clean living in the winter by dusting off my slow cooker - tomorrow, lentil stew is bing served which is also packed with loads of veggies - cant wait to see my boys faces;)

    1. I am not coming to yours (if you ever invite me) if you serve me lentil stew. I feel for your boys! I don't do pulses believe it or not. Or stew. But I like pie. Which is stew with a crust on it technically. Go figure! And I will eat stew ... if you make me suet dumplings to go with it :) And I sometimes wonder what's the difference between a casserole and a stew? #thesethingsbotherme

  10. I ate lots of Manchego w quince paste, and other lovelies that I normally keep a lid on. Nothing ridiculous, and not insane amounts, but I've just turned 40, and it doesn't take much for me to start putting it on and feel heavy, sluggish and gross. I'm not joining a gym or having dry January, but am just getting back to being sensible and healthy-ish again. Thankfully! Nice to indulge, but also nice to feel good and fit into my clothes. Shame I can't do both anymore!

Happy new year, Sue, and lovely to read your blog again. I really do enjoy reading your witty, warm, cheerful, candid writing. Xxx

    1. That sounds like a delightful way to spent Christmas eating Manchego with quince paste. I've tried Manchego but I've not sampled the delights of quince paste. I've tried quince face cream (but not to eat). And turning 40 is a bit meh when it comes to the old body - I found that it's getting really really hard these days to shift anything at all.

Wishing you a happy 2015 Belinda and thanks for your lovely words!

    1. I wrote this last week when I was feeling all good and "healthier". I pigged a bit today and now I have a downer on myself. And I think I'm happier when I have double breakfasts - if you don't like the first one you can put it right with the second one.

  12. Lol @ I need to chew! I was doing so well before Christmas & lost almost 6Ibs! It hasn't all gone back on but I am feeling rotten! My new year starts tomorrow as I'm back to being focused! Besides I need to look my best for February! ;) x

  13. Every bit counts! And avocado and poached eggs go so well together. Hope you find a happy medium between treats and healthy eating; I haven't found that balance yet. For now, my poor metabolism is taking the brunt of sodas and potato chips. :D

    Happy 2015 Sue!

    1. Your food feeds on Instagram are awesome and I know you can eat all that because you run. I look at it these days and the scales go mad. But I do like my food - I'm not really a salad girl. The avocado on toast with eggs is a good compromise as it's warm.

And a happy 2015 to you too Kristina!
