Kiehls Ultimate Strength Hand Salve

Tuesday 10 February 2015

My hands are shocking at the moment. I guess it's partly to do with the horrible cold weather but I also know it's because I'm really rubbish at putting on the old hand cream. I put it on then I find I have to wash my hands two minutes later and then I've washed the stuff off. Seems a bit pointless if you ask me. So I don't put it on. But it doesn't mean I don't need the stuff ... I do! Especially as I have a little bit of painful cracked skin on my thumb and if you've been there ... you know it really hurts. You can't put any pressure on it and you can't fasten the top button of your jeans or open toothpaste caps without it potentially cracking more and well you know, it hurts. And yes I'm a baby.

So I bought the Kiehls Ultimate Strength Hand Salve today. I've heard good things about it and I read the 5 star reviews on their website and so I decided to go in to the Leeds store to check it out, I also liked the sales lady who was on the right side of attentive but not over zealous. She let me try some on and left me to wander around the shop and browse and eventually I made my way back to the till to buy my tube of the hand salve.

So I'm typing this now after having had the cream on for a good 5 hours. They were grey and dry and chapped before the cream and even after a couple of hand washes and no reapplication, they are looking and feeling so much better. A good application before bed time and I think I will start tomorrow off on a good and less painful note.

So has anybody used this before and what's your verdict?

Last Note :

  • I also love the smell - it's a little bit herbal (not sweet which I dislike) but not overpowering. Like it's doing you good. So much better than a heavy perfumed smell which pretends it's doing something and it's not.
  • I love stores where you get freebies without having to ask for them. Just makes the day that little bit sweeter!

Yup - there is a sachet of "Powerful Wrinkle Reducing Cream" there. I'm not getting any younger!

    1. Honestly - no sooner had I finished this post and I was putting the boys to bed, I must have washed my hands at least 4 times! It honestly doesn't help at all. But I just popped some more cream on and it seems to smooth the skin down - they feel about 80% better than they did at the start of today. I've had a few hand creams which work for a brief amount of time and not long after, my hands are as bad as before. Just try some in a store and see how you go on.

  2. I feel your pain - I too have cracked, chapped fingers and it's driving me mad! I've been using Laura Mercier Pistachio hand cream which has a crazy good smell (like pistachio ice cream) and seems to be helping. But the washing your hands thing is a problem for sure. As soon as spring hits I'm definitely going for a manicure! Love Kiehl's, might be worth a try! :)

    1. I think there's a lot of people with tender chapped hands at the moment - this weather has a lot to answer for. I didn't even know Laura Mercier even did hand cream - I always thought they were a make up brand. I think I would struggle with it being a pistachio smell - I'm funny with hand creams which smell of fruit - I'm all about clean/green/sharp/fresh smells but I can happily eat pistachio ice cream - go figure!

  3. Neutrogena is the only thing that seems to have enough oomph to work for my poor hands but this also sounds worth a look!

    1. Neutrogena is good but it takes an age to work in I find and I always find it feels very waxy for a long time which is probably the cream doing it's job but I find myself washing my hands to make them feel more normal again which is defeating the object. I can't win!

  4. I have the same problem, the only thing that helps the cracks is to put a little bit of cream, I use Elizabeth Arden 8 hour, and then a plaster on overnight. It softens the skin and allows it to heal. Worth a try!

    1. I usually do use some Elizabeth Arden 8 hour cream - it is fabulous stuff. And I use it at night when I have to but I think I also need to do more during the day about looking after my hands. The combination of the EA and the Kiehls should keep me in check though.

    1. The less said about my face the better - I have dry skin anyway and this weather is just cruel to it. I was looking for a new moisturiser (I get bored quickly) so I was glad to get a couple of samples.

  6. I'm looking forward to hearing how you get on with this long-term - I'm always on the look-out for a great hand-cream. I seem to suffer with constantly sore hands in the Winter. If only we could bottle sunshine, we'd have an instant cure!

    1. Well I love the smell - so that's half the battle won. If I don't like the smell, we don't get far with the hand cream regardless of whether it's good for me (fickle I am). My hands feel and look loads better today. I've tried to remember to pop a little cream on throughout the day and so far so good. Thing is, I do all of this with good intentions and those are sure to run out before the tube does!

  7. There are a few products out there that is really effective - this is one of them! The Neutrogena one Philly mentioned here is also pretty decent especially for its price... for smell I love love love the Aesop ones which I find I keep putting on just to smell it so it works doubly well haha! And if you want to speed things up a bit wearing some thin gloves at night after you've put this on will do the trick... same thing for feet!

    1. I haven't really looked in to the Aesop ones - I see them all the time on Instagram but I was trying not to get sucked in to the hype. But I gather they smell divine then! And I have done that before with the gloves and socks for my hands and feet but find I don't like the feel of them and whip them off again. I'm just rubbish!

  8. I've not heard of this brand before, I'm always on the look out for decent hand cream as my hands get sore with the gel and wipes we have at work. I swear by body shop hemp hand cream at the moment as I've found its the only thing that helps with a dermatitis flare up, I've also got my teenage son using it at night for his cracked hands. Please report back on the Kiehls, I might have to have a trip to Leeds to try it which would be nice xx

    1. I'll try to see where I am with the cream in about a month's time. The thing with me is I start things off meaning to be good and all that and then forget to carry it through. As soon as my hands are better, I go back to the old ways - but I will have to try harder. It does seem to be good so far but I'm only 24 hours in to using it but the lady at the store mentioned that it's used in hospitals too. It's worth popping in just to have a chat and a try! You might even get a little sample of the cream!

  9. I've a few kiehls bits but not this hand cream. I will say that one way to hugely help your hands is to change your hand soap. Get something organic & sulphate free and not only will your hands feel softer, your hand cream will work even better! Thanks for the tip off - love a great hand cream x

    1. I went off googling for the sulphate free stuff and it's not really that readily available is it? I did notice that Palmers do something so, so I will see if I can find some in Boots next time I'm in. It would be interesting to see how much of a difference it makes. Thank you for that tip off!

  10. Firstly, what Avril said!! Sulphate free & organic is a massive bonus where hand soaps are concerned (and don't you know I'll have tried them all??!!!!) I haven't tried Kiehls, but I swear by Elizabeth Arden's 8 hour hand cream and also a recent discovery is the Irish brand, Bia Beauty and their Lemon Myrtle Hand cream.. HATE cracking skin on fingers .., ouch!

    1. The irony is that I remember leaving a comment on your blog ages ago about how to treat your hands and I did mention the Elizabeth Arden 8 hour cream. I also meant to pick up a tube of Crabtree & Evelyn's La Source hand therapy - the hand scrub stuff. But they were out of stock (!). Now that really does work miracles - I always use that after decorating when my hands really take the brunt of everything! And like you say - cracking skin is a killer!

  11. I'd love to try this Sue - will put it on my wishlist. I do rate my La Roche Posay hand cream but only use it at night and agree - sometimes there's hardly any point putting hand cream on only to have to wash your hands 5 minutes later! Think everyone's hands are suffering with the cold at the moment. Definitely helps swapping to a kinder/non sulphate handwash (as Avril suggests) - I have noticed the difference when I use my Liz Earle handwash but I always feel the need to have some sort harsh anti-bacterial handwash around - can't win! :)

    1. I think if I can just help myself by even putting it on - that will go a long way. I've never looked after my hands and I don't like the way hand cream feels on them so it's been one of those things I use only in an emergency. I will have horrible gnarly looking hands in a few years. One good thing - I always use rubber gloves for washing up!

  12. Every winter my hands go through the mill & I could almost cry in pain as they go through a stage of being so sore! Yves Rocher do the best hand cream for me & I've just run out & need to restock as asap! x
