Bike

Monday 22 July 2013

Last Friday was the last day of term and having had a few days in shorts and skirts and strappy tops, I was bored and wanting to wear pants again and cover up. Jeans would have been the death of me so I decided loose linen pants were the way to go. I confess to these not being terribly fashionable in some peoples eyes but guess what - they are comfy and in my world, on a very hot day, they are light and airy bliss.

I covered up further with the Whistles Freya shirt as I figured I was brown enough already. I am one of those people who actively try not to tan because I go mucky coloured. Not golden brown like my boys. Just mucky brown. And the WOC is good for house keys and tissues for those hay fever nose drippy moments. Fess up - you've been there.

Whistles Freya shirt, Hobbs NW3 bag, Matalan linen trousers, Primark sneakers, Dahon bike.

By the way, have you seen my new bike? Okay, okay, have you seen my sister's new bike which she has lent me and which she said I could borrow ... which probably means it will come to live with me for a goodly amount of time before it gets returned. To be fair, I did at least return her Chanel. Me good :o)

I rode it on the Thursday and Friday and it has changed my whole school run. No more red faced frantic legging it down the road - I can now casually keep pace with the boys. And I have had lots of ooh's and aah's from the mums over it. This is a Dahon fold up bike. And also the design is what I refer to as a "sit up and beg" bike. Not a racer, not a mountain bike but a good old sit up and beg bike which my dad would be proud of. Did I ever tell you my dad didn't speak to me for 3 months after I refused to have a girls bike and wanted a boys racer when I was about 10? Stubborness runs in the family obviously. Oh and it also says "bullet" on the cross bar thingy which appeals to my inner child.

Err, I was going to recommend one of these bikes (small trips/school runs) to you till I did some research and found out they are not cheap. Like starting price £350 not cheap. They are cheaper if you buy them in Hong Kong and bring them across like my mad sister did (luggage allowance - what's that??) but somewhat more pricey over here in the UK. But have a shop around, there are cheaper alternatives here. I can't vouch for them, two days on a bike does not make a cycling expert make me!

Anyway, here's how to re-create the look if you like. Tissues optional :o)

  1. You look fabe. I happen to be one of those people who likes linen pants. Well, linene everything really...even if it does mean I have to iron a lot.

    1. I know what you mean :o) And you can't beat linen in the summer - it really is one of the most comfortable fabrics out there for dealing with the temperatures. I accept linen being crumpled. It's a given.

  3. Man, you look super cool on that bike! I know zero about bikes (as in, not even how to ride them, I may have mentioned that before) but I know cool when I see it. You're going to have to tell your sister she can't have it back ;)

    1. You can't ride a bike? Well says me. who can't swim :o) You should try learning - I reckon you'll love it. And then you'll be off!

And I didn't even think about whether this was cool or not but it is fun. I do like a bike ride actually except when I am behind George and he brakes without warning. Arrrghghgh. And he weaves all over. Arrrghghg again.

    2. I know, I really should learn already. Husband's been after me about it for ages. But the last time I tried I got spooked when I saw a car a block away and fell over, skinned my knee like a little girl and still have a scar to show for it years later. Makes me think I'm just too old to learn. And maybe I'm just not cut out for anything that goes faster than a light jog...

  4. Confession time ... I quite like a nice airy linen trouser also! I may just have a few pairs in my wardrobe, they may just have been worn (and washed and worn and washed and worn ...) over the past few weeks ... in this weather a girl's gotta' do what a girl's gotta do!!

    1. Well I have to say I've fallen out of love with linen trousers over the last couple of years but you still can't beat them for comfort in this weather. I've been slumming around in them in the evening and at home and sometimes comfort just wins. After all - a girl's gotta do what a girl's gotta do!

    1. The bike's a winner isn't it. And in my other favourite colour yellow too.

Hope you have a good week too and not be too mobbed now that you've been featured in the Selfridges window!

  6. Hubby is bike mad and he'll thoroughly approve of your (I mean your sister's) bike. The yellow color is beyond cool. No wonder the other moms oohed and aahed over it!

    1. I did a bit of googling on the brand and that was an interesting 15 mins - Dahon are one of the biggest manufacturer of fold up bikes but their future is now a bit touch and go since the son of the owner left and set up his own fold up bike company. There's a story to delve in to.

I think the moms oohed and aahed over it because it was just that little bit different from the regular bikes - I have to say I rather like it. Kind of cool and the colour does turn heads doesn't it?

    1. Well to be honest, I didn't think I was going to be wearing any this year but I grabbed a pair the other day (yes, I have more than one pair) and they were just so right for the weather and I realised I was missing a trick.

    1. Atterley Road still have a couple of sizes in and I saw a couple in the Leeds branch of Whistles the other day but that won't help you much ... sorry. I'd love one in the khaki shade too if I could get one. As for jeans - the weather cooled off the last couple of days but I'm still holding off for now. We'll be back in the jeans before you know it.

  9. How cool do u look Sue?!! I used to love linen trousers but have gone off them, I don't think they are very 'me' but I will say I love them on other people, and that includes u! But I do not love white ones with multicoloured thongs- that is not good!! X

    1. It's okay Trea - I'd gone off them too but I just wanted to wear something light and airy. I think it depends on the design - mine are rather old hat - they'd be great if they were linen chinos instead. I confess to having a pair of white linen trousers too ... not worn with coloured thongs I have to say :o)

  10. How cool are you. I have baggy linens in Black, White and Orange(?) and I am not afraid to say so. Sometimes it just has to be done. I adore your' bike too. I must say a huge thank you, for my little surprise in the post box today. I have sent you an email and thanks a million. xxxx

  12. My husband has one of those fold up bikes. In Barbie doll pink, to prevent it being stolen. Or ridden by me - I can't be riding a Barbie pink bike. But the yellow looks coooool!
