Princess of Darkness

Saturday 29 June 2013

I wanted to wear a dress the other day but I didn't want to wear a short dress. For some reason, I wasn't in the mood for a bit of knee flashing. I didn't get on with my navy jersey maxi as it is rather plunging and I didn't want to wear a floral one as I wasn't feeling that way inclined. So I dug out a very old French Connection black linen maxi that I have never worn in the ten years I have had it. I don't even know why I still have it in my possession but I keep thinking, I'm sure it will come in to it's own one day ...  let's try today!

New Look Jersey Cardigan, French Connection Dress, Monsoon Sandals (all old)

Itching to chop off the frill at the bottom.

Anyway, I put it on, stuck on a black jersey cardi and stomped downstairs. George's jaw dropped.

George : Mummy, what are you wearing?
Me wearily: What do you mean? (I've had similar conversations with Ben when he was younger)
George : You look strange?
Me warily : Why do I look strange?
George : You look strange?
Me : Is it because I am wearing a dress?
George grinning : Yes - you are wearing a dress! You look like .... a beautiful princess!!!

Oh! Well he blindsided me with that one! I have to say, if I do indeed look like a princess, then I must look the Princess of Darkness and my son needs therapy.

Later on George ran round the school playground shouting "My mummy is a woman!" for all to hear. I think this dress wearing thing is seriously affecting his mental health. Back to the jeans tomorrow.

  1. Kids comments are the best! My boy said once when I put a skirt on after a long time wearing jeans, " You look nice Mum, but don't pick me up from school like that." Hmmmm. I like the dress - the length is great and I love black.

    1. For some reason, I really like black dresses in the summer. More so than white. I have a white French Connection totally girly one which is yet to be worn. I'm not sure yet when it will be worn yet - I'm not feeling like showing my knees for some reason.

But yeah - kids are funny aren't they? And truthful ... even when you don't want them to be.

  2. That's so funny!

The dress looks good (love that you have had it 10 years and never gave up hope - that's just the kind of thing I do!)

Good idea about chopping the frill - could give it a new lease of life (not that there's anything wrong with it as it is.) x

    1. I think I might chop it off, it might go to a midi, then to an above the knee and before I know it, it will become a cami top. I get a bit chop happy sometimes ;o)

    1. I want to wear more dresses - I have lots of them but I still keep bypassing them in the morning. They make me feel too done for some reason.

But yes - don't forget to share when you get your first compliment :o)

  4. I can hear him saying it:) He loves his mum and wants to keep you sweet:) I really like it - but like you not sure the frill would last too long! xx

    1. I didn't even have to bribe him with a Kinder egg. Yes the frill will have to come off - it's not minimalist enough for me until it does. But then it won't be a maxi anymore but a midi or even a mini. Let's see what comes out of the sewing bag.

  5. So funny! My little boy tells me I look like a beautiful princess sometimes when I'm in a dress too! You look great - a different look for you but really good!

    1. I looked at the photo and thought - it does look strange - and even stranger for poor George I can imagine. I might try again but with an even simpler dress I think.

  6. That is really hysterical. I think maybe it's a sign you should be embracing the dresses a bit more. I'm trying to get in touch with my inner dress-wearer this summer too. Feels like such a nice change, and I love maxi dresses. A little bit of feminine mystery to them, don't you think?

    1. They are quite comforting are the maxis and the midi's and do ensure a little bit of modesty. And if you get the right dress, they can be super comfy. I'd really like this black linen one if it was without frill. But yes, it's good to get in touch with the old feminine side - be nice to see what style of dress you like.

  7. Wow - such a different look from you .. I feel a bit like George 'you look strange'!!! But I like it, I really do. Clearly the frill has to go ... there's absolutely nothing wrong with it, but if it isn't removed, I will be convinced that the real Sue was abducted during the night and replaced by a much girlier body double!

    1. Yes - the frill has to go - it's not very me is it? Different about ten years ago but your tastes change along the way. Maybe I need a new maxi? Yay!

  8. It's better than some of the other things he comes out with :o)

  9. it is a different look but I like it! Definitely remove the frill though because it makes it look a little dated - a nice simple, straight hem will look a lot neater

    1. It's either going back in the box or it's getting the frill chopped off - depends on how ambitious I'm feeling. It definitely needs a straight hem to bring it up to date!

    2. It's a nice dress.. HEM! I don't think it'd be a hard job though cos it's linen so it's not a horrible stretchy fabric that'd be a nightmare to sew. Looks like the frill is attached as a separate piece so you could unpick it then hem? or you could get some bias binding if you want to keep most of the length?

      xx

  10. I like it! Even with the frill. And that story is TOO FUNNY.

    1. Even with the frill?

Kids - you never know what they will say next but invariably it's nonsense but funny nonsense. Especially in this case.

  11. Haha - My mummy is a woman!! I remember Callum toddling over to me years ago. I was wearing a skirt for the first time in a long time and it would appear for the first time in his short memory...he just kept poking my legs and looking up at me as if to say 'what are they?' haha.
I would chop off the frill and maybe add a contrasting colour to keep the length. Oh and a belt to show off your slim waist. Fab dress - cannot believe you've never worn it! x

  12. Years ago, my brother shouted something like "she has legs!!!!" when I surfaced in something skirt/dress like. I think I was pretty scarred by the incident.

Yes the dress will be too short as a maxi when the hem comes off - I shall have to devise something wonderful. And strangely enough - it doesn't belt well at all. I've tried, believe me. It bunches in all the wrong places but it is a perfect summer holiday dress as it skims everything and you can eat loads in it. It might just ... go back in the box. I'm feeling lazy.

    1. I haven't worn the French Connection one yet - I have to psyche myself up for that one a bit - it is white after all.

Anyway - nice to see you blogging again :o)

    1. It's a very comfy dress which has helped secure it's place with me still. If it hadn't been, it would have gone just like that. But I'm sure I can work a little magic on it.

  17. I love the shape, but second (third? Seventh?) Removing the hem. I do the buy-store-wear thing too. Never throw anything out :-D

"Best" compliment ever - "mummy, you look like a boy girl"

    Which was nice.
