Bonkers in Topshop Pentathalon Sneakers/Trainers

Tuesday 25 June 2013

OR

So of couse I went for the confused as hell pair. The yellow bit is the texture of pony skin but then dyed to look like jaundiced guinea fowl feathers. A little weird but somehow it works.

Strangely beguiling.

The colours got to me - they're grey and yellow! Two of my favourite colours! And it's a little bit different from the norm isn't it? Besides, how often do we get yellow pony guinea fowl? These are actually part of the Topshop premium range and now reduced from £65 to £30 and some of you are thinking - yup - can totally see why and who'd buy those (apart from me) but I like them and it's good to fall prey to a touch of whimsy every now and then. Since February, I've looked at just about every sneaker/trainer going on the high street and then I spotted these funky things on Topshop a little while back but held back because to be honest, they scare me a little because they are quite "loud" for little ol' me.

But right now I have them in my possession - thank you Topshop sale! And when I opened the box, I could feel a smile creeping across my face. They made me happy. Sometimes, you buy something and it arrives and it fits and it does the job but it doesn't make you smile because it's just plain, boring and practical. These are fun and make me smile and .....want to stroke the yellow bits ... a lot.

Besides, my argument for them stems along the lines of, we can wear them with something a bit like this .....

Or like this if you have something similar in your wardrobe :

Or as I would wear them ... just like this because this is the kind of thing I normally wear anyway. Swap for white skinnies if you have the legs for them (I haven't - sob).

H&M Cotton Jumper, H&M Low (not very) Skinny Jeans, Mulberry Camera Bag (old)

Gosh - when I first got them, I thought they were a bit out there but looking at these pics, they don't look that weird now or as outlandish as I first thought. I make everything look tame!

And I dug out the Mulberry Camera bag because Grazia said we need a camera bag to update our look ... apparently.

Phew! One fad I don't have to spend money on.

So tell me - how bonkers are these sneakers? Or have I somehow just managed to make them look unusually normal?

Update 26/06/13 @ 08:13am :

  • I woke up this morning and the fog lifted. I'm returning them - I'm not going to get the wear out of these. But I like them and can recommend them to anyone else who will get the wear out of them. I think I'm a Converse girl really.
  • I will probably regret my decision after. As usual.

  1. At first I thought whaaat??? But actually, you pull them off perfectly. I, however, will not be rushing out to buy a pair, but have now realised I NEED a camera bag:) Just as well I'm heading to the UK tomorrow. I will have to add it to my list to keep an eye out for one!

    1. I know - they look a bit in your face but honestly, they are lovely in real life but I've had to rationalise my cost per wear and it's going to work out about £30 per wear so that's not good. But the cost of wear for the bag - that is good!

  2. I don't know that these would suit me but they look great on you. And um. LOL re camera bag. Is it bad that now I think I need one? x

    1. I've decided the trainers are not for me - they only work with a certain style of jean for me and that restricts their wear. However, I do not think it is bad at all for you to invest in a camera bag - that is so very you in fact.

  3. Aah, I wanted that camera bag so badly when it came out but I could in no way justify getting it. It makes me feel a bit better knowing that you are rocking it in my place ;)

Also, your sneakers kick butt. I like the leopard pair, too! I was looking for sneakers earlier this week but couldn't find the brand that I wanted, so I sulked and bought comfy sandals instead.

    1. I love this bag but I use it more in the winter time - probably because it's black. I will try to rock more often in it so you know it is being loved.

And the sneakers - brain readjusted overnight and they're going back. I love them but I won't wear them enough and I've decided that the money is best on something which will get worn. Aaaah. The sales. How easy to fall prey!

  4. I like the camera bag trend but I've since changed my mind on the trainers. I'm just a boring old fogey really :o(

  5. I'm thinking you feel the way about your sneakers as I did about my crazy Zara ones (remember the orange pony hair? http://bit.ly/XWhZmw). Well here I am, months later, and they are still making me smile, ear to ear. You will not regret you crazy sneaks, not one bit! Enjoy your pony guinea fowl!!

    1. I want to Defne but there's that sensible part of me that says - now are you really going to wear those that much? And should you not be saving that money up for a pair of winter boots. Yup - I'm thinking about winter already!

  6. OMG those trainers are freaking amazing - I LOVE THEM! What a bargain too - I am so annoyed I'm on a spending ban - I really want/need/desire these!

    1. Fiona - how good are you on your self imposed spending ban? I really need to take a leaf out of your book and then start by tearing up all magazines and stop reading blogs - i.e. get rid of all temptation. Then I might stand a chance ....

  7. I like them a lot! I just ordered the golden sneaker from Zara, but I'm afraid they'll get returned, because I'm a Converse girl, too. Like you... I'm sure I'll regret it if they do get sent back (they were a steal so maybe I'll keep them... I'm so fashion bi-polar).

    1. Oh don't worry changing your mind. Lots more shoes to fry out there. I went in Zara yesterday morning and the boots which I have bought 3 times and returned 3 times were sat there in my size for £19.99. I was that close but I realised if it didn't work the first 3 times, what's going to change to make it work the fourth? Leave well alone. So I did - I'm so proud of myself.

  8. I think they fit in with your wardrobe brilliantly. They make a change. I think if you send them back there may be a few regrets. Heck, if you don't wear them you could always Ebay them and probably make a tidy profit. ( I did that with some Ash wedges that I had been deliberating over) x p.s love the bag.

    1. They certainly are a change and strangely enough do seem to work but realistically, I will grab a pair of Converse over these any day. I'm a creature of habit.

  9. They are great - fab colours. I think they would be brilliant with lighter boyfriends, a bit of ankle showing and a white t. Having said all that, I understand why you want to return them. No point in keeping if you won't wear. I can't keep even the least expensive item if I won't wear it - it's such a waste. I see so much stuff coming into the charity shop with tags on and I think it's just awful to buy something you're not going to enjoy wearing. Axx

    1. Avril - you liked a pair of trainers! Sorry - just about to faint.

But I have returned them today - I won't get the wear out of them and there's no point convincing myself that they will go with so much when I know I will wear them with just a jumper. But honestly, I was pretty 50 50 on these.

  10. You did the right thing in returning. I like the colour and the idea of them but the execution doesn't match so I vote for a style you'd wear regularly too.

  11. I've always wondered why it's called a camera bag seeing that I do lug around a camera all the time and no way in hell will I be able to fit mine into those tiny little things. I like the sneakers but I don't love them. LOL! Love your description. Lil L thought I was barking mad when I started laughing for no reason.

    1. Not your camera LOL. But perfect for mine. I'd been thinking of upgrading my happy snaps camera but realistically if it was much bigger, I'd probably not take it out with me because it was too big, heavy and cumbersome which is pretty bad for the blog.

What's wrong with pony guinea fowl anyway?

  12. I typed a long response yesterday, then lost signal on the train and it all went, arrrgh! In a nut shell, am so like you with decisions and returning. Bought some new work shoes (needed!), wore around house, hurt, thought about returning them, then told myself to get over the pain, 3 days in and I'm there and so pleased I took the plunge to keep them! The trainers really suit you, if you can afford the risk, I hope you kept them! Oh & guess what, tried that M Jacobs bracelet on the other week! Is half price in Harrods, now wanting it again and I had forgotten.....!x

    1. My problem is I get really excited with something. Try it on, love it, love it, love it less, love it less, don't like it anymore so it makes sense to return. I'm just fickle that way.

I did the same with some Sam Edelman Frankies and I was going to try and break them in and in the end, I thought I love my little toes too much so I returned them though I can't get them for love or money or them as they were out a few years ago. If they had been 4.5 instead of 4 - they would definitely be in my wardrobe now.

I like the bracelet - doesn't look like it rattles too much (practical to the end).

  13. they actually look really good, wish you'd kept them! they are such a great colour combo as well, grey and yellow are such a good pair (my bedroom colour scheme haha) and i think they quite easily jazz up an outfit. wish i'd spotted these earlier, i'm very much a cons girl myself but i think i need a sneaker update!
