School Uniform

Tuesday 11 September 2012
Ben has a red jumper and grey trousers - there's not much to say about it apart from it's sourced cheaply and it fits.  I like to buy clothes for my kids which fit them now and not in one year's time.  If I buy them clothes for when they are a bit bigger - they wear them when they are a bit bigger. I know this is a bit of a luxury but Ben goes to the local non fee paying school and his uniform is rather homogenous  and all the supermarkets supply his school colours.  I appreciate not all people can afford to do this but this is my one of my indulgences.  Thank you to all the supermarkets who help me with this little luxury.

This leads me on to say I do actually practice what I preach - I like my clothes to fit too  - sleeves not too long and trouser/jean lengths where they're meant to be.  If it requires a stint at the alterations lady then that's where they go. Clothes do not have to be expensive but ideally they should fit. Clothes that fit will make you look much better, more groomed and feel happier.  End of witter.  Actually not end of witter - that little witter is because of my being a short bum and in my early years - shops didn't appear to be so geared to catering for "petite" people.  Finding well fitting clothes was quite difficult especially good suits for the work place and I was delighted to find petite ranges eventually filtering through in the last 10-15 years.  Nowadays I don't need suits but I still appreciate a shop who can provide a petite length in jeans.  Saves me a session taking them up.  End of witter.

Anyway I digress and this isn't about Ben's uniform - this is about mine - my school uniform.  I took a photo for each of the days I did on the school run last week.  The one constant I noticed was .... jeans.  Well that's a surprise .... not.

So in the spirit of Eric Carle's The Hungry Caterpillar ......

On Tuesday, I wore this.

French Connection Top (old)
and a pair of
New Look Slim Boyfriend Jeans (old)

On Wednesday, I wore this.

Zara Cream Top (SS12)
and a pair of
Falmer Heritage Skinny Boyfriend Jeans

On Thursday, I wore this.

Jack Wills Shirt (SS11)
and a pair of
Falmer Heritage Skinny Boyfriend Jeans

On Friday I wore this.

Hobbs NW3 Owl Tee (SS12)
and a pair of
Jack Wills Skinny (but loose) Jeans

Well I'm not going to win any awards for blazing a fashion trail at the school gates but it's easy on the eye and comfortable and perfect for my current role as SAHM.  And it just goes to prove I'm really quite a "conservative" dresser or putting it in a different way - a creature of habits.  Occasionally, I stray in to dress territory (hotter days) and chinos (when I think I should get my moneys worth out of them) but it's rare.  Since starting this blog way back at the very end of April, I have noticed that most posts have featured my boyfriend jeans which have been worn to death but are all the better for it. The proper skinnies will no doubt feature more once it gets to boot weather but for the time being, my legs look all the better for not looking like carrots unless they have boots to balance them out. Anybody else suffer from carrot leg syndrome - big on top and slim at the bottom?

And when the air turns nippy, one of my many many coats will surface.  And the obligatory scarf.

So what's your daily go to uniform?  Same as mine or are you a little more daring?  Wouldn't be hard would it?

P.S.  You're not reading this blog for fashion and style tips are you?  Wrong blog, mate!

  1. Loving the first top - and your jeans are great - I agree, they improve with wear. I wear the same 3 or 4 pairs every week. Would you send me one of these for my School Run competition - please? Would love to feature you on next week's blog! Avril x

    1. I was just saying on Ash's blog that I was too embarrassed to send a photo in. I think I don't mind too much as my head's chopped off - does that count?

    2. Chopped off heads are allowed...please send one through! You are too funny mrs! x

  2. I'm the same ... jeans (but skinny for me) and a top. Will be moving onto jacket & scarf combo soon. I think you'd be hard set to find a SAHM who doesn't wear jeans & top each day. Or perhaps I'm about to be proven wrong ...

    1. Not by me. Jeans for me most days and then more jeans on the rest of the days. Though I have tried a bit harder this year as had too many unworn items in the wardrobe. Can't stop buying dresses even though I don't like wearing them that much - they're just not as practical - unless you're pregnant and then you don't have ever descending pants.

  3. LOL! You never fail to crack me up, Sue.

I've been rather attached to my boyfriend jeans since they arrived from the US. They're what I wear nearly everyday with a change in top and jacket. Rather shameful really. Thankfully, I don't write a fashion blog either or else I'd be considered the worst fashion blogger ever.

    1. Well I was thinking just the same about what I wear - rather shameful - a blog about a pair of jeans and a top - and that's it. Hence you go to Karla's Closet to look at pretty clothes and you go to mine for ... something else ... not sure what but something else ... normality perhaps?

I can't do cooking or beauty - lord forbid.

    1. I'm getting round to it. It's funny how you can post pictures of yourself on your own blog but I feel a bit nervous on someone elses. Like walking in to a room of strangers. I need help.

  5. I like the Zara cream top loads...so breezy.

I'm a conservative dresser (bordering on boring) too :)

    1. Nothing wrong with being conservative - it's best to stick with what you feel happy in - hence a top and pair of jeans. I like the way you have your own style and it still shows through whether you're dressing casually or smart.

I'm really enjoying the Zara top though - it's certainly paying its way - not that it was that expensive anyway.

  6. Ha-ha-ha, you are so funny Sue! That's why I love your blog.
I wear jeans everyday...and that's why I am hesitating about starting my own styling blog!

    1. Ekaterina - I would love to see you do a styling blog and if it's 100 ways to wear jeans then it's 100 ways to wear jeans - I like anything with jeans as you probably tell. I've just done 4 tops with jeans - you can beat that!

    1. Girl after my own heart ... and a pair of joggy botts when I get through the front door - I have had to do some mad cleaning this week. I can't clean in jeans. Not good when bending over.

  8. I'm exactly the same, addicted to denim. And I don't even have a change of seasons to change things up a bit. But if it's good enough for Emmanuelle Alt...

    1. Well absolutely. I'm in excellent company then! When did denim become such a uniform for us all? I'm sure it was not always this way.

  9. why on earth would you be embarrassed!! I think you do that casual style so well! Lovely tops and shirts always:) I always feel like a fool myself standing out the back hoping the neighbours aren't peeking out the windows!!Go for it and see how you get on:)

    1. At least you have someone to take your photo. I tried getting Ben to take my photo and he says "mum - you being all weird again" as he takes yet another blurred shot. He's certainly no David Bailey.

For some reason, I can only do casual. Tell me to dress up to go out and it's nightmare territory. I don't do dressing up well ... at all. I try though ... I really try .... but it's hard.

  10. That first top is really special, love the creamy orange pattern in it - you look fab in all the outfits. These days I wait in the car in my UGGS. I should put something interesting on and venture out.

    1. I wish I could wait in the car with my Uggs on. I've got a few more years before I can entertain that dream.
