A Dress For All Seasons ....

Monday 7 September 2015

.... and it's a little black one at that. I spied this number in H&M about a month ago:

I tried it on, loved it, the queue was long, I was in a rush, the parking was running out and so I left it. Till I managed to squeeze in a quick 10 mins in H&M the other week when I bagged it pronto.

Do you know what I really like about it? This is a brilliantly versatile dress which works across all seasons and occasions really well.

It's summer, wear it as it is with some little flat sandals, all kind of casual like. Sling a straw basket  or canvas tote over your shoulder and make like your a local in France shopping for your morning pastries.

Toast Basket (old), H&M Dress, Zara Sandals, Primark Trilby

If you're on your jollies, you can switch this up with some glam sandals, a lovely little clutch bag and some pretty jewellery.

It's autumn (interchangeable with spring though), wear this with a pair of skinny jeans with a pair of cool Mary Janes, ghillie lace ups or like I'm going to do with my Swedish Hasbeens and pretend you're an arty farty type in a boho corner cafe, sipping coffee (or Earl Grey in my case) watching the world go by. In reality, I'm going to clip clop in to the playground and then clip clop back out again #clogs

Topshop Baxter Jeans, H&M Dress, Swedish Hasbeens Shoes

Want to toughen it up a little - just change the shoes. It's all in the shoes I always think. Switch out the shoes for buckled up boots as the weather cools.

Oh it's turned winter and the party season has started - get the legs out, throw on some jewellery, bling it up and throw on a fur coat, some knickers (;o)), a slip (it's a little sheer) and a pair of rocking heels and dance the night away!

Matalan Fur Coat, H&M Dress, C Petula Sandals, Snakeskin Clutch

I have to say it would be rare for me to dress all girly like above. I would prefer to do cool girl below especially with those lovely Chie Mihara boots which I've fallen a little in love with!

What? Spring already? It's just about warm enough for bare legs, grab a big cardi and some ankle boots and go welcome in the new buds and leaves on the trees. This look is interchangeable with autumn (see entry for autumn above - ha ha).

Primark Cardigan, H&M Dress, Zara Belt, Office Boots

Not quite ready to expose the legs? You could try a pair of over the knee boots if you're brave enough - they seem to be having another season this year. Me? I'll just stick with the fur gilet (I already have one).

So a few variations there but I'll think you'll have to agree this is definitely "a dress for all seasons".

Last Notes :

The Grumps smiled indulgently as I traipsed past him announcing I was off to do a photo shoot (;-p) I never normally do this at the weekend. I can't take the flack.

I was too lazy to find a bra with clear straps or a strapless bra (spot the nude straps).---

Great minds think alike - check out Michelle's take on her "Take Me Anywhere Dress" here. Some of you will be lucky enough to already have got it over the summer!

  1. Great post, Sue! I love dresses that tick all the boxes like that. In fact I'm actively trying to buy only that kind. They're hard to spot....

May I add a variation? Dress+big cardi+ mid heeled sandals. A bit crazy perhaps, but I can't seem to get enough of it this end of the summer!

    1. Not at all crazy - I get it! To be honest, it's not that different from sticking a pair of thin ballet pumps on your feet as sticking on a pair of sandals - the warmth factor is zilch on both but mid heeled sandals make your legs look better. I might try this one yet - watch this space!

  2. Great post Sue - I love seeing items worn in different ways and I'd never have imagined it would work with so many combinations when I saw the H&M image right at the top. You seriously should be styling as a business my friend! x

    1. I guess to a lot of people, it's a boring black number but to me, that's great because I feel totally at home in them and they provide such a good foil for everything you want to throw at them. I love it when people do posts - they take a bit more time - but they can be good fun. I was just lucky that the hubs didn't give me any flack this time. And me styling - ha ha. I can barely dress myself some days. As the other half.

  3. How has your fab little H&M number escape my attention?! Seriously gorgeous Sue! Brilliant post, I now have a ton more ideas to style up my Mango dress! Seeing you in your fur coat, I've got to try my fur gilets with the dress! There is plenty more wear to be had with this style of dress, it is indeed perfect for all seasons! Thanks so much for the lovely shout up and link to my post too....it's much appreciated! :0) xx

    1. Well I saw the black version of your dress in the summer but I was being really good and trying not to buy things which I thought I might not wear that much and then I saw you in your number in York and thought it looked fab. This one is a happy compromise in that it's a similar shape but because there are no sequins on this, it makes it a little more wearable for me in the daytime than the plain black Mango version. And my fur gilet is packed away for now but yep - I think I need to do a try on myself as well.

  4. I love it when you play dress up, all great looks but the last look is my favourite. Some great individual pieces you have picked too, like the look of the H&M glitter shoes. x

    1. The H&M shoes are very sweet aren't they? I've eyed them up a few times but I know I don't need them - I have enough going out shoes that I don't wear. I need to get a social life just so I can wear pretty shoes!

    1. This dress was an easy one to style - I could picture everything and it all rattled off in to a post and then I just had to cross my fingers that the reality lived up to what I had imagined and that it all worked together.
