Everyday Adventurer

Tuesday 11 August 2015

Let's have a run out somewhere. It's going to be nice on Saturday. Let's go to ......

.... Scarborough.

That was my suggestion for last Saturday. I follow Margot Barbara's Instagram feed and in one of her posts, she said to try and do something a little different, be a little more adventurous and to tag it with #MBeverydayadventurer. Like taking a different route home, exploring something new, just having a little adventure basically. So I decided to go right instead of left. I chose to go to Scarborough and not Whitby because Whitby I have been to many times and its beautiful and we feel comfortable getting there, where to park up, where to eat and where to wander. Scarborough? Not so much. So I chose to go right towards Scarborough instead of left to Whitby.

I donned the H&M linen cotton skirt I bought recently (seen here) and popped on an old favourite Primark blouse. I could have done shorts, I toyed with culottes, I could have done jeans but a skirt just felt right today.

And the weather could not have been more perfect and the parking was far cheaper than in Leeds (you hearing me Leeds City Council? £5.50 for 2 hours is outrageous).

I didn't do much and I didn't move much from my sandy spot on the beach but I had a great time sat watching the pirate ship going back and forth ....

I went "aww" at the donkey which had no takers and seemed to have got left behind.

I drank coffee and unknowingly tanned my toes. I now have the white flip flop marks as proof! Gah!

I made The Grumps take a photo of me sat in the deckchair which colour co-ordinated with my outfit ;o)

And I watched the boys run screaming to the sea and then scream louder when they jumped in as it was sooooo COLD!

I smiled indulgently as I watched them cover themselves in as much sand as possible #laundrysgoingtobefun  Note the donkey now has some takers!

And then we had fish and chips. I believe it is the law when you go to the seaside :o)

And finished off with ice-cream. That's another law.

We took pics by a graffiti wall.

And as we headed back to the car, I came across a Storm Trooper who gave me a hug. Which doesn't happen every day you know.

And do you know what? That all came about because I decided to take a right instead of a left :o)

So thank you for the sowing the seed Margot. I have to say, I thoroughly enjoyed my everyday adventure!

    1. I did think I was seeing things when I spotted the Pirate ship but there it was sailing back and forth!

  2. Margot has the right idea. Otherwise it's so easy to get into a comfort zone, isn't it? Always taking the same road somewhere, or the same walking route. Scary Mary! It's definitely a good call to just try to be open minded to keep things new and fun. Your day out looked worth it for the chips alone...

    1. I am such a creature of habits and once I have something sussed, I do it over and over for ease. But it was good to do Scarborough that day though I have to say the amazing weather helped. And fish and chips - it's got to be done!

  3. Ahhhhh Scarborough, Peasholm Park, Ann Bronte's grave, the Royal fortress aka Scarborough Castle. Love! Except it was always miserably cold and windy when we used to visit as hubby would only ever go out of season (February). Looks like a good time was had by all and those fish and chips look scrum x

    1. You know it well then? I last went when Ben was teeny and remember going down the windy route pushing the pram down to the bottom where the beach was instead of using the steps. I think we had fish and chips there then but it was a sit down affair that time and not half as much fun. The kids make it you know!

  4. I am glad you turned right as I have enjoyed your pictures and the boys looked like they had a ball! I have never been to Scarborough, it looks a lovely beach. I am in total agreement with you, a day at the seaside fish & chips and ice cream is a must!

    1. Well it's not bad to say it's nearly on our doorstep! We have to make more effort to go there but Whitby is our default. It does have better fish and chips I have to say but the beach is better at Scarborough. Can't win them all!

  5. It's great seeing the boys grow and how cute are you in that skirt!

Is there surf in the UK? Or wakeboarding? Or is it just too darn cold to bother?

    1. There is surfing and I have no idea what wake boarding is ;) It is cold but you have to suit up over here.

And the boys are growing up. You know how I can tell ... they leave me in peace to sit whilst they go off and enjoy themselves now! Bliss.

  7. I haven't been to Scarborough for ages. I think it was the location of my first ever seaside holiday!! That was when leaving Sheffield for the coast was a holiday! Thanks for the memories.

    1. Ha ha. You used to live this way then? Well I'm assuming you live down south. But a day out to the seaside was a big event in those days as not everyone had a car. I think it used be more special because of it.

  8. Love love love Scarbados! The boys look like they had a fantastic time, the Harbour Bar is my favourite place for a cuppa, it's like stepping onto the scene of Happy Days. The Donkeys live in fields on the Oliver's Mount road when they are not on the beach and we pass them on the way to the hospital, they are so cute x

    1. Scarbados was an eye opener or I must have been going around with my eyes shut the last time I went there. I couldn't believe the graffiti street going back up to the centre ... I thought I was somewhere else in Europe! And the donkeys are so cute, they were making their way along the road when we drove in and then found them on the beach not long after. They look well cared for which is important. And the Harbour Bar - it's been noted!

  9. Turning right certainly seemed your best decision!......I have never been to Scarborough but it looks the perfect quintessential English seaside town, with donkeys, pirate ships, ice cream and fish and chips, your boys will remember this forever!! ...... England in summer at its very best!!

    1. It's never particularly appealed but I just fancied somewhere different and I'm so glad we did go somewhere different for a day out. It couldn't have been more perfect ... though there was lots of sand to hoover out of the car after!

  10. Love it Sue, love that you tried something different and it was a success. Your photos look beautiful. It is always R who makes us go different places (I would go to the same old comfortable spots time and time again) and you know sometimes it works and turns out to be a really memorable day. I am trying so hard to be more adventurous, in my old age I am turning too boring!!

    1. I can't believe you are ever boring Frances! But yes, sometimes it's good to do something a little different. My friend is great for dragging us out to different places and trying different things, though I declined the canoeing and the surfboarding to date seeing as how I can't swim. And to be honest, there's nothing wrong with what you know - it's tried and tested and if you enjoy it, that's what counts.

I'm with Frances....the fish and chips look scrummy and off course you must uphold that seaside tradition! xx

    1. It was nice to capture the day!

And the fish and chips were good ... but not as good as the ones we have at The Magpie in Whitby. They take some beating but hey, you can't have it all!

  13. I love Scarborough! If you're feeling adventurous again, Cayton Bay just down the road is a blink-and-you'll-miss-it cove that's always been less crowded whenever we've visited. You'll need to take a picnic or you might go hungry (there's basically nothing there!) but if you want to escape the masses and watch a few hardy surfers taking to the waves it's well worth a visit :-) xx

    1. Watching the surfers sounds good and I think the boys might enjoy that. We might try that next time - spend some time between the two. Eat at Scarborough and then chill over at Cayton Bay. Two birds, one stone, another adventure! Thank you!

  14. That's such a wonderful trip! Also the fish and chips in the UK are the best! It's become a trendy food in Paris but the ones I had on the Brit side were soo good!

  15. Never been to Scarborough. My friends from university that live in Newcastle seem to take their summer holiday there each year - your pictures make it look really lovely! Glad the four of you had a great day out :)
