Off the Shoulder Tops

Thursday 23 July 2015

I bet you were wondering if I was going to do this trend didn't you? Well here we are. That's the top. That's my shoulder :)

Now I love the look of these and always have but I have a niggle about being too old to get away with this look. Then I read Beth's comment on them and she said exactly what I must have been feeling about "a 19 year old's top next to the face of a 44 year old face" except mine is even older.  Arrghghg. But it didn't stop me trying. So I bought this one from River Island a few weeks back.

Just testing to see if it pings up on to my shoulder if I put my arms up. Yes it does.

So what do I think? I thought it was great when I tried it on in store but at home, that feeling that I'm trying to look like a nubile young thing is still there. Besides it's got an elasticated waist which wants to ping up and show my food baby.

So it's gone back. And I ordered this one instead from New Look which doesn't have an elasticated waist.

Which isn't too bad but I'm not quite feeling it (look at the body language). I raised my arms and up the shirred neckline popped on to my shoulders! And there I left it as I thought, it looks okay actually and I can wear a normal bra with this too then. And I feel less Lolita in it.

Happier. But at least I have options.

It might feel a bit of a cop out then sort of trying the look but not quite working it but a girl's got to do what a girl's got to do and another thing - be honest, those of you who have these off the shoulder tops. How annoying are they really when they ping up and back on to your shoulders?

Really annoying right?

Last Note :

  • Remember to snip the label out of the back as it might gape a little bit (but not much) as it's actually designed as an off the shoulder top.

    1. I'm past that fiddling with my clothes all the time stage. I did that in my teens when I wore stupidly uncomfortable things in the name of fashion but these days, I've decided to wear what I feel good and comfortable in. It's a sign of old age creeping in isn't it?

    2. Yes I'm the same I do think it may be age creeping in, but no point denying that I guess, just adapting fashion to work for you.. makes sense and still looks great xxx

  2. I've bought the M&S Bardot top and I wore it the same way as you as I'm not sure about the whole off the shoulder look either, and they do ping up! I do love you're New Look one - it looks great either way. Lynne xx

    1. I really struggled with them. I love them to look at but just felt that I looked too try hard but with it up on my shoulders, it was still such a pretty detail - kind of peasant like. And yup - nearly all the ones I tried pinged up or were too short and I'm not exactly tall #bellyflash

  3. I think you have to master the art of walking like a robot to keep it in place Sue. Broad shouldered ladies (me) look even broader in this kind of top (sob) so I haven't needed to acquire this new skill. Nice top though x

    1. For a small person, I have quite good shoulders for propping up clothes (it's something which my family have always said about me) and I think that I look a little wider wearing it off the shoulders actually. Wearing the neckline higher, brings me back in again. But yes, I actually think this is a tricky trend - not the most practical though certainly very pretty ... on some.

  4. It's a lovely top Sue, I think I like it pinged up on you the best. I won't be going with us trend either my shoulders are square enough 😕

    1. I like it pinged up on me too Sue - I don't feel like it's wearing me as much.

  5. I dabble with most trends, but this off the shoulder malarkey is not going to be one of them. I agree very much with Beth's comment. The second top worn on the shoulders looks absolutely lovely on you! I'm tempted to give it a go. But it will be staying firmly on the shoulders. :D

    1. I forgot about those who are broad of shoulder. It's probably why I don't think it's very me along with the fact that I'm not the youngest kid on the block. The top worn on the shoulders is much more doable - works well with skirts, jeans and denim culottes as I found!

  6. I know what you mean about the age thing, but I think they look quite glamorous, as the one part that hopefully isn't too awful as you get older is your shoulders, and at least most of them cover the tops of your arms too, always a bone of contention! I love the look, not the ones with masses of frills and flounces, but your stripey New Look one is just perfect!!

    1. I've always loved them - I think they are so pretty and in years past, I've looked for tops like this with little success and now finally they've come out in abundance ... when I think I'm past it. But yes, the tops of arms is something I try to cover as well - they've never been on the slim side so anything which offers any kind of coverage is good with me. And I prefer the ones with the cleaner lines too. A bit easier to wear I think unless you really are a nubile young thing.

  7. Aargh, I'm so desperate for one of these tops, and I keep seeing Frances and Alex looking so cool in them, but they just don't seem to work for me :-( Either they cut off the blood supply to my hands, or they travel south at the first opportunity! And don't even start me on the pinging... I also can't abide an elasticated hem - which body type exactly do they suit?? Not mine, that's for sure! Anyway, I feel better for that little rant, and I'm glad you found one that you like - it looks lovely! xx

    1. The riding up on to the shoulders was the thing that annoyed me the most. So many I tried and so many went straight up unless you pulled them really low which isn't something I was about to do besides which it leaves you feeling a little vulnerable and exposed. Or maybe it's just me. On holiday, it feels fine to show off bare shoulders but over here, I feel a little naked. I think I have a happy compromise with my top because if I go on holiday, this is one of those tops I can wear off the shoulder whilst over here in these far from temperate climes, the on the shoulder look works so much better.

  8. Another great-looking designer-esque top at a fraction of the price. Maybe you need to just wear it really far down your shoulders for a whole day (if it will stay there) just to get used to it.

  9. I've just realised there are 2! I wasn't observant enough at first! I think you made the right choice - I definitely prefer the New Look top... on or off shoulder. Is it a keeper?

  10. Sue i think you look gorgeous in them. You have an incredible figure and i think showing off that part of a ladies shoulder area can be incredibly flattering, so for me age doesn't come in to it at all. I think you rock the look! I am yet to try this myself and i've wondered, how comfy are they? Do you feel like there is something weird going on on your shoulders? Do they stay put?
