Fur Coat

Wednesday 3 December 2014

Not the most exciting. Not the most pimptastic. Not the most eye-catching. But definitely the most practical and wearable for me!

Matalan Fur Coat, Mulberry Bag, Aubin & Wills Jumper, H&M Jeans, Converse pumps

So another little Matalan lovely. I ordered this fur coat online with a 20% discount when I spotted that they did a petite version of it a few weeks back. I actually sized up to a 12 after having tried a 12 on in store in a regular fit (there was no size 10 to try on) and thinking it wasn't that big actually. This is actually going against the norm of every other fur coat I've tried on where I've had to size down to stop them overwhelming me. In a size 12 petite, I can fit a nice cosy jumper under this with room to spare and I don't even need to take the sleeves up. And guess what - in the spirit of the previous post - there are some in store and none online!

Yes I could have gone a little crazier, yes I could have gone a little bit more luxe but hey if a plain black fur coat is good enough for Jeanne Damas, it's good enough for me :o) And yes, I may have taken a few fashion cues from this French goddess (across body bag and Converse) but hey it works for me!

(I traced this pic as far back as 2008 before I lost the trail, proving some looks are pretty timeless)

  1. Fur-tastic Sue! Sorry! It looks great and totally wearable and totally you I hope you're keeping it. I'd love it too but in dark grey maybe which is impossible to find let alone get right.

    1. The smokey grey one from Zara was lovely fur - none online though but they are still in store whenever I'm passing through. That one is a very wearable evening and daytime one because of the colour. If you can bring yourself to pop in to a store anytime soon, it's probably worth checking out.

  2. It goes so well with your hair color! I think that's the key to wearing faux-fur. I need to figure out what color I need to buy...

    1. I did everything I could to avoid getting a black one as it almost felt too cliched but at the end of the day, I tried this one on partly out of curiosity and because I couldn't face the "nude" coloured one which had a touch too much peachy pink in it ... and it worked. I find that the ones with the slightly mottled fur (not as fluffy) work better on me - less bulky. It's just another consideration out of the other 5000 factors one has to consider when buying a fur coat :o) I never thought hair colour was one of the considerations though LOL.

  3. Great choice, Sue! It really does look - unlike most of the high street faux fur offerings imho - understated and expensive! Suits you a lot! Irina x

    1. Thank you Irina. It's understated definitely and very wearable which means I will have no problems pulling this on to nip out on a school run in it or down to the shops (such a glamorous life I lead - not).

  4. Sue I hope you don't mind me adding that there are coats with very similar fur at New Look online and a hooded version on ASOS that I had to um investigate further haha you know, for the sake of thoroughness you understand :-)

    1. Of course I don't mind. There are some good coats everywhere - the faux fur these days is excellent quality. But the main problem with me was the fit - you don't know till you try and I was lucky with the Matalan one in that it was warm, not restrictive and I could still wear chunky layers underneath. Some of the ones that looked good on, I had to size down so the arms were tight yet you'd never realise that just from looking. And some which looked lovely on the hanger just made me look like a furball munchkin which isn't a particularly good look. I can't do ones with hoods either - hoods are the preserve of my practical coats only - I'm strange that way :o)

  5. Amazing style steal Sue....I would go as far as to say you look much cooler in your fur coat! I dashed off to Matalan to check their selection after seeing your last post and I have to say they really have excelled themselves on the coat front....I could have easily purchased a couple of their offerings! xx

    1. I know they've done well for me. Just when I thought I'd well and truly reached the end of my coat saga - two turn up at Matalan. Thankfully they're not expensive and one is going to be a present so I don't feel too bad. And if I had any doubts about getting a boring black fur coat, I think it was dispelled when I saw the Pinterest pic and thought - phew! It just made me realise how practical and wearable it was.

  6. You made the right choice as always - it looks effortlessly wonderful. I noticed they had an embellished denim shirt very JCrew the other week. Must go and have a look if it's still in stock x

    1. Thanks Donna. I thought everyone was going to say - awww - why didn't you go for the grey Zara one but I didn't because this one is so much more comfortable and wearable actually. I think it's also less maintenance - the fur on the Zara one is so lovely, I kept stroking it - it would have been bald after a week. I've not spotted those shirts you mentioned online or in store in Matalan - surprise surprise! But I've seen one of those in H&M? Are you sure it's not that one?

  7. I have this too and I love it! I ordered my usual size 12 but felt it was a little too snug. Ended up sizing up to a 22! It gives the most luxurious, wrap around feeling, like walking about in your duvet. I felt very sophisticated and sexy wearing it out for my 40th last weekend. Hope you enjoy wearing it too!

    1. Size 22? From a size 12? Wow! But it will probably be really dramatic worn oversized and I'm glad to hear you love it. It's a total bargain and I think I'm going to get quite a lot of mileage out of this coat - I don't think it really dates.

  9. As normal you always go for the one that is perfect for you. As others have said the colour compliments your hair colour very well. Great style steal love the combination of the lux look of the fur coat with the casual trainers.

    1. I have to go for something that works for my lifestyle AnnMarie so more often than not it has to be useful and practical. If it's not, I find I tend to leave it and not wear it. And you can't go wrong with a bit of black can you? Though I did try really hard to find another colour.

  10. That coat is gorgeous Sue! I would love a plain black version myself, as I'm not always having a leopard kind of day :)

    1. Ah - but you totally suit your leopard one whereas I would look a little overkill in one. I thought you also had a really big fur coat somewhere?

    1. Go ahead Jenny but I think they are selling out fast. But don't be scared of trying on any bigger sizes - they're not that roomy.

    1. I like the versatility of them too. Mines not too in your face so it's very wearable. I saw one in Next years ago that I really liked and knew I should have gone for it but I never did. But we got there in the end!
