Boho in a Kate Moss for Topshop Embroidered Top

Wednesday 14 May 2014

So - did anyone actually pick up anything from the Kate Moss Topshop collaboration then? I didn't intend to as I thought it was a bit out there actually for a suburban mum with all the suede fringe jackets and sparkly offerings but hey ho, I got myself sucked in to the hype and ordered this embroidered smock top. The most wearable thing I could choose from all that there was and which I thought might actually work with my style.

And I didn't really have very high hopes for it and did wonder what I was doing after I hit the button but I have to say, I liked it more than I thought I would after trying it on.

I tried it with my usual combo of boyfriend jeans and sandals. That works.

Zara Jeans (old), Carvela Krimble Sandals (old)

And also with a change of shoes to silver espadrilles. That works too.

Zara Silver Espadrilles (old)

And then I thought I'd go the whole hog and get out the skinny bootcuts again. I seem to do this once a year. I see someone rocking something similar with a bit of a seventies vibe about it and I'm off again channeling my my inner seventies child.

Yet again, I'm not wholly convinced by the mini bootcuts but I am taking comfort in the fact that Wendy and Blair pulled some mini bootcuts out earlier on in the year so they can't be all bad. I actually think I need a pair of skinny flares to pull off the look in a more convincing manner but then again I'm scared of wearing anything much wider and flapping down the street.

I actually ordered this top in a size 10 originally. And it was humongous. So I went and ordered the next size down. And whilst I was waiting for that to arrive, I happened to read a post by Natasha on Wear and Where about how this top ran big and how she had sized down by two sizes even though she was pregnant. So then I had to go and get it another size down from that. So third time lucky and I am now in a size 6 though I know I'm a healthy 10. I know it's supposed to be loose and swingy, but there's loose and swingy and there's circus tent!

Oh this is a nice little bonus - it even has little sequins on the back. You know how many tops only have the embroidery and design running along the front and then go all cheapskate around the back? At least this one continues with some sequin detailing on the back. Good call Kate.

So quite an interesting little top. I had the opportunity to wear it out the other night but I didn't. I hadn't made my mind up entirely at that point. A few days on, I think I'm about 80% convinced it's a keeper. What do you think?

------------------------------

Last Note :

Basically, this top is great if :

  • You want to look like you made a bit of an effort without trying too hard.
  • You want to pig out in a joyous manner as it conceals all sins.
  • You're a closet boho hippie chick.
  • You're pregnant. Which I'm not!! Well maybe but only with a little food baby :o)

  1. After the initial flurry of posts when the collection launched this is the first one I've seen featuring an OOTD with any Kate Moss items! It looks very nice - I like the bootcuts but then skinny jeans look dreadful on me so I'm kinda biased! I've no idea how it was priced (most of it seemed wildly overpriced to me) but 80% sure is good at this stage - I'd vote keep :)

    1. I actually saw it on ThankFifi after I posted this and she's paired it altogether different but great all the same. The worrying thing is we both think this top is a great top for hiding food babies which tells you a lot :o/

Still only 80%. I keep packaging it back up and then pulling it back out at the last minute! So still need another 20% convincing.

  2. No I didn't purchase and Yes this looks fab on you and I am liking you in the mini-bootcuts. If you decide, in the future, that the top is not for you don't worry just send it on to me :-) H xx

    1. To be honest - I didn't like much in the collection and wasn't sucked in to it at all until I got the email from Net a Porter saying it was online. This was the only thing I thought might be fun and wearable but the longer I keep it, the more doubts I have as I keep seeing other things which I might prefer to spend my money on instead. I would have said this was more me a few years back and maybe I've moved on a little since. Hmmm.

  3. I think it looks a lovely top and looks great on you, particularly with the espadrilles. I didn't take too much notice of the collection as my daughter had handled it at work and deemed it overpriced so I have no idea how much any of it cost but if I saw this top in a shop, I would want it x

    1. I'm thinking for the kind of top it is, it wasn't too badly priced. You can say it's in the Monsoon price range for something similar actually so if you look at it that way, it's not out there. However I can imagine that some of the other pieces might seem a bit off the wall with the pricing. It is a very wearable piece though.

  4. I love it Sue...so pretty & very you! Looks fab with the silver espadrilles. I really like the boot cuts on you & they go really well with the style of the top. x

    1. Thank you Sian. It is pretty but I'm still not sure it's really what I'm after. I wasn't looking for it in the first place if you know what I mean? The bootcuts never photograph well unless I try to do a silly sideways pose so you can't tell what they are really like but I thought they did lend the top a certain vibe. I have some days left on the return policy to make my mind up. But I do need some going out tops!

  5. I took a look at the collection and honestly? The only piece that appealed were those slinky full length gowns, which, I'm never going to be able to wear anyway since, no where to wear it! But, in saying that, the top you ended up with is pretty cute, especially when pairing it down with some jeans (or maybe denim shorts in summer?)

    1. That's pretty much my first impression. I preferred her previous collections but wasn't sold on those either particularly. I did have the infamous floral print top (there was a dress version too) but I bought that off Ebay years after it came out and then sold it back out for the same amount as that made me look pregnant. I wonder what it is about her tops which make you look pregnant? I'm not sure it's the one and the more responses I type - the more I think it's wrong for me. But that's one good thing about blogs - it helps you to get some fresh perspectives on something.

  6. Gorgeous and yes so you - you wear it well. I wasn't sucked in here I'm afraid but may take a gander again now:) Loving your hair - have you had a trim? xx

    1. Thanks Joanna ... but I think I'm going to like my little Madewell top more :o) though it's very different. That one when I look at it makes me go all happy, this one is "it's nice and it fulfils a function but is that good enough?".

And the silly hair. I had a trim about a month ago and the hairdresser hacked loads and loads off and it's just starting to "normalise" itself now. It's taken me four weeks of battling with it every day to see if I'm having a good hair day or a bad hair day as I really didn't like it when she finished with it. I do not have the same lovely relationship you have with your hairdresser. I go only when I have to and get out as quickly as I can.

  7. Hi Sue- thus is a fabulous top and looks great on, loving the sequins on the back and I'm sure it will be a very versatile and regular wear each Summer! xx

    1. It's actually very like an old Topshop number I had about 10 years ago actually - boy how time flies and fashion comes round again. It's probably why I was drawn to it. My original one was a blue version and it also shrunk a lot in the wash. I'm still having my doubts though it's a pretty top.

  8. I think you do credit to this top Sue! Personally it's not my style (and not versatile enough) and maybe it looks better irl life but onscreen, it doesn't look any better than your other similar tops - that I prefer way, way more than this. I think the one thing I like the least about it is the fullness which is a little too much but that's just me. Maybe if it was a little dress ... ok, stop the waffling - nope, I don't like it sorry! :-(

    1. That's okay - you don't have to like everything and I certainly wouldn't expect you to - we'd be a boring lot if we all wore and did the same things. I will be honest - the versatility or lack of it isn't an issue - it's the kind of top which is quite specific - it's not meant to go with a thousand other items in the wardrobe and it wasn't bought with that in mind - some things are just meant to be parked and to come out when the time is right for them. We'll just take this one as a no from you then :o)

  9. I popped into TS with my daughter to have a look at it and to be honest got bored. Over priced tat. This top however did catch my eye, the detail is really nice. I hadn't clocked how big it is though wow 2 sizes down!! I normally go up 2 sizes in TS. I have a hunch you will send it back. You shouldn't though - it looks lovely on you x

    1. There wasn't that much in our stores but most of it I walked past anyway - like I said, I wasn't that enamoured by it all on first impressions either though this was the only thing I thought I liked in it so I bought it on a whim to see. The previous Kate Moss collections I believe ran a bit smaller as most of the reviews I've read on the pieces have said that everything seems to be running large - I think Kate must have been nudged to put some vanity sizes in.

  10. Oh Sue....it is so you! I love it! Looks fab with the boyfriends and silver espadrilles! Like an idiot I haven't had a look.....yet!! Glad I have seen this on you though because you have ignited my interest in the range which may well have passed me by otherwise!! xx

    1. Thanks Michelle - the collection wasn't that great - you certainly didn't miss that much. I think this top was quite nice and I think Frances might have picked up the sequin jacket which she will do total justice too but the other bits were a bit meh. It's a little bit more ornate than my regular stuff so I'm really having to put my thinking head on around this and whether this is what I want. There is so much other stuff which might be nicer out there ... you know what we're like :o)

  12. Hi Rosanna - hope you are feeling a lot better now. And those espadrilles seem to be gettting a lot of love ... and deservedly so - they are so comfy. I think they are going to be my summer staples.

    1. Hi Jane - thanks about the top. It's certainly more blingy than my usual attire. I agree about not being really tempted by the collection so I surprised myself by ordering this top - I think I was really being nosey :o/

  15. My daughter drags me to Topshop every Saturday and I saw this top and really liked it. It helped that she really didn't like it for her. I didn't try it though so thanks for styling it so I could see how it looks. I have to say it looks great on you. Keep it!

    1. I'm trying to work out if that is a good thing or a bad thing that your daughter didn't really like it ;o)

You think it's a keeper as well do you?

  16. I didn't purchase anything from the collection but this was my favourite piece in the collection and its looks great in each way you styled it but I love it with the bootcuts - something 70's and hippy fabulous about that I just adore. I would keep it.....x

    1. I like the hippy fabulous bit too. Maybe I might have to do it with another top which I feel a little more me in. It's very me but not if you know what I mean? I can hear myself talking myself out of this .... but thank you for the vote of confidence.

  17. Sorry to be negative - it looks nice but imho it doesn't look wow. A bit too tentlike....I like some of your other tops more. Sorry Sue. Love the hair too. Hx

    1. Oh don't worry about being negative - it's just one of those tops. If I saw it on someone else I think I'd go wow - providing they really did look wow in it but on me - I'm not 100% sure. Sometimes, you have to try something different to realise what you really like. There wasn't the immediate love and I think you need to have that about something which you know isn't going to earn it's keep in the same way other items do. I have dresses which come out once a year but I still think they are fab and definitely worth it but this top ...I'm not convinced.

  18. What a wonderful top - I think this looks really nice!! It goes well with the BFs and the mini bootcuts, and I agree skinny flares would be really nice with it too. Do it, do it, do it !
More praise here for the silver espadrilles - how cool! A nice mixture of boho and bling ( boholing? ooo, a new fashion trend!!)

    1. It's been a few days since I caught up with all the comments and I have to say I've returned it. The sequins were a touch too much for me. I may have my eye on a lighter version of something similar though - the seed has been sown!

  19. I LOVE it. And you know I never lie! I love the shape, the sequins, the colour ... I think it looks really good on you. And it is that perfect top for when you feel you should make an effort, but really can't be bothered to pull out all the stops. In fact, I like it so much, that I'm going to have a look for it online. Can you guess I think it's a definite keeper?!

    1. Whoa - I was wondering what you were going to say. You can never tell which way the fashion pendulum is going to swing with you. Sorry to say, I've returned it. I did genuinely fall for it but I always need a few days and a few more try ons to get my head in gear and I gradually fell out of love for it as the days went on. Thank goodness for fab return policies! Having said that ... if it went in the sale, I might buy it again!

  22. I'm a closet Boho Hippie Chick so I love it Sue! Would be fab with little denim shorts as well. I had a good old browse of the collection but didn't succumb which is surprising for me. As a total skinnies addict I love the bootcuts on you. I saw a girl in London in a pair the other day with wedges and she looked fab! x

    1. I think I'm going to wear the bootcuts again despite the world being against them. In real life, they are more flattering but they don't seem to capture well on photos. You can't see the shape of them unless I adopt some really weird pose! And glad to meet a fellow closet boho hippie chick - I reckon there's a few more out there too.
