Sports Luxe

Tuesday 15 April 2014

I was doing the ironing and I'd just taken my joggy bots out of the laundry bag and was just checking to see if they had shrunk by trying them on when I had a brainwave. I was going to see if I could work this sports luxe trend. As the Grumps likes to point out "I am easily distracted".

By sports luxe, I'm going by Frances' definition of :

"... think sports clothing shapes in luxe fabrics worn with heels or mixed with sharp tailoring. This is not an 80's shell suit look, this is grown up, glamorous sportswear with a luxurious elegant twist".

Hmm .... well thankfully the Isabel Marant for H&M joggy bots hadn't shrunk in the wash so that's my sports clothing shape bit sorted. I also have my Tesco F&F ivory shell top with it's clean lines which I'm passing off as sharp tailoring and lastly, I have my M&S snakeskin heels from last year for the worn with heels bit. Here goes ....

Tesco F&F top, H&M joggy bots (old), M&S heels (old)

Hmmm. Not quite feeling it yet. Something is missing. How about a parka? Yeah. Now I'm feeling it a bit more  .....

Topshop Parka (old)

.... and the finishing touch .... a baseball cap!

Was the cap too much? Sheesh. I always over do it. But that was fun. Well it was more fun than the ironing :o)

Like the Grumps says - I am easily distracted!

------------------------------

Last note :

  • Replace the heels for some trainers or Birks and you have a perfectly normal workable, wearable, walkable in outfit. Baseball cap optional :o)
  • The Isabel Marant for H&M joggers are from last year's collaboration and from the boys section. They go a bit baggy at the knee after an hour or so of wearing which unfortunately make me look a bit Nora Batty. I also cut the bottoms of them off because I was being a bit daft and didn't know what I was doing. They are now consigned to homewear. You live and learn .... you live and learn :o(
  • If anyone can recommend some nice charcoal slim cut jersey (not too thin) joggers which don't cost too much, don't bag too much and don't have any zips on the bottom, I would be most grateful. Thank you.

    1. Still looking Jane, still looking. There are many out there which are almost perfect but fall down at the last hurdle. They need to be of a certain thickness too as when the jersey is too thin - they reveal too many imperfections and it's not pretty. Zara look like they have some really nice slim cut styles but the ones I tried on last season were just too thin. Looked fine from the front but oh the back - arghgh!

    1. Hi Sharon and thanks. You're a fellow baseball cap wearer aren't you? I've worn mine a couple of times on the school run - the first time, I did feel like all eyes were on me but the second time, I'd gotten over it.

    1. Oh this little beauty is from .... Matalan and I picked it up for the princely sum of £2.50. It's a charcoal grey tweed which makes it kind of not too in your face. I'm too old for a snapback.

  4. Yes that was fun and the good news is it didn't cost you a penny! x

    1. No it didn't - I had all the bits in the wardrobe which is why I thought I'd have a play. I was having a bit of a fun but it did make me think that some of these looks are pretty much easier than we think - you just need the odd item which pulls a whole look together.

  5. Oh I don't know ... I'm not 100% sure because of the bottoms but my god you are 99.9% pulling this off and I know how cool you are so it's 99.9% recurring!

I reckon plain grey, and the right grey, and you are there nailing this!

    1. Joggy bots are not easy to pull off. I love joggy bots but none of mine are actually fit to be worn out of the house which is why I'm on the lookout for a good pair which flatter and don't bag and don't cost the earth. Probably another mission impossible on my part.

  6. Topshop have some bots that look pretty nice, greyish, blacky.

    1. Thanks Lucy. I've just had a nosey and some of them look close but still not quite there. I think I missed out on some in Uniqlo which came and went so fast, I barely had time to register them.

    1. I don't actually mind the ironing but I'm a right one for going off and doing something else half way through so it's rare that I get through what I need to. And I have the same problem with joggers and getting them at the perfect length. Some of them have zips on the bottom which make it awkard to alter or turn up and they're usually the ones which look like they're the right fabric and everything. I am not buying a Kooples pair ... unless they are reduced to at least half price. And they never have them at my outlet either.

  8. Genuinely think I love this look, I am getting a bit too safe samey the older I am getting and I think if you step out your comfort zone (a little I am not talking moschino mcdonalds ensemble head to toe!) it looks great and brave and edgy! Sue I reckon you should step away from the iron as you look far too stylish to be doing that and rock that look out!! I am on a mission to find some cool bottoms I can wear with heels...not too baggy go in a bottom and are slightly tailored at the top .. I saw some H&m kids ones in a denim tencel fabric that looked nice but now they have disappeared out the store and are not online, if you do find any in the meantime please let me know and I will do the same xxx thanks for the reference, my take on it but would prob be challenged by Vogue et al!! Xxx

    1. Oh I am seriously predictable and staid in my every day dress but I like to stay aware of what is happening out there. Stepping out of one's comfort zone definitely takes guts and I've always been one to shy away from controversy so even wearing a baseball cap for me took a bit of guts but once you've done it, it's not that bad. Though tottering along in 4 inch heels and a baseball cap might render me the subject of the school playground and give people something to talk about.

I'm definitely on the lookout for more slim cut ones but if I see any nice ones, I will give you a holler. Infact I'll probably dedicate a whole blog post to them!

    1. Thank you Kat. And I know you love a pair of joggers or harem pants so you're totally at home in them. The hat I did think was a bit overkill but I think it kind helped gel the whole sports luxe thing together.

  11. Really want some slim jogger type things but it would be trainers for me Sue! Actually quite like the hat! One question - did you unplug the iron whilst trying all this lot on? :)

    1. Hmm. So you're a Topshop joggy bots girl - I've not had that much success but I've not tried any of their recent offerings. I will take a good nosey when the Easter hols are over and I have some time in Leeds to dive in to the store. I'll do a smash and grab and try and see what happens.

    2. Good luck! Let us know if you have success. Just realised mine are all cuffed which you may not like....Hx

  14. I would ditch the heels and wear this outfit with your white Birkies and you would be good to go Sue! I just can't get my head around joggers with heels.....and believe me I've experimented too! I bought a pair of what I bought would be the perfect luxe-look joggers in the H&M sale for a fiver......just as well they were only £5 because I just couldn't get them to work so now they have been relegated to my slobbing about the house wear xx

    1. You've tried as well? I feel a bit like I'm trying too hard with the heels on and then I feel a bit of a wuss for not going the distance to achieve a look. I am what I am and comfort comes first ...it's definitely an age thing.

    1. There's an art to wearing joggy bots outside and I've not nailed it yet because I've not found the perfect pair yet. I'm not going to lie though - I have worn joggy bots on the school run and it's not been pretty. We all have those days ... don't we?

      Delete
  16. I like them with the heels. Does that make me super cool or a throw back to my younger days?? The key for me is definitely finding joggers with a thin fabric and not too voluminous around the waist otherwise I look like Michelin woman.

    1. The cut and fabric is vital. I've had slim cuts and the fabric has been too thin and then you see everything wobble and that is not good. I've had thicker fabrics and they just chunk you out but they are so cosy and toasty that I can't get rid of them and keep them for evening and house cleaning duties (H&M boys joggers £5.99). And so the search goes on ....

    1. If I was a true fashionista - the cap is a must. But I'm not and I do feel a little self conscious wearing it when I'm not on the football field where I seem to blend in with the other cap wearing blokes. The cap is definitely dividing opinion.

  18. You are totally working this look Sue! M&S heels look fab with the joggers.

Love it on everyone else but I must admit I am a bit scared of it ;-) I am going to have to try sports luxe for the evening first and wear it with heels, otherwise I am going to feel too dumpy and short.

I've spotted a few things at Mint Velvet and John Lewis so thanks for the inspiration xxx

    1. I haven't really thought about doing this sports luxe thing - it's just what I have in my wardrobe and I was playing dress up. The fact is, I'm really boring but sometimes, I like to pretend I'm not. The heels definitely help ramp this look up a bit though.

  20. Well do you know, I read your post a few days ago, mulled over it, came back to it and yep, I really like it all on you. Can't put a finger on why, I just do! Feel like you are rocking it x

    1. No, I get it. It's not a look for everyone but it's all over the mags and I couldn't help thinking how easy or difficult this would actually be to do. I do like the clean lines of the whole look though.

Maybe if I'm feeling brave, I can rock this look outside and with the hat!

  21. That cap is most definitely not too much. In fact, I wasn't quite convinced tip I got to that last photo, and then, SOLD! You are rocking it! The only thing I would suggest would actually be trying maybe turning up the bottoms of your sweatpants just a little bit. I love the rough rolled edge, and I'd kind of like to see a bit more of that white at the bottom, not to mention a little skin around the ankle (and the rest of your sandals). Have to say though, I am totally digging this. Also just had to say that I saw some sweatpants the other day at H&M, they were sort of heather and marled like the ones you've got on here, and they looked super cute. Worth having a look I'd say!

    1. Oh the unmitigated disaster which is the H&M sweatpants. They are sort of really nice but were quite a few turn ups too long. So I thought I would chop them down a bit and went too far. Instead I blanket stitched the rolled hem to prevent them fraying further and now find that they are on the cusp of too short. Pah. And they bag terribly ... but they are very comfy so I am reluctant to part with them. They do make fab proper slobbing pants though. I'll have to take another look at what's on the high street - I've seen some of the H&M ones but they are cut a little bit loose on me - I need them slim fit and not too thin or else it all goes horribly wrong. A wobbly bot in a pair of thin jersey joggers is a very bad look.

      Delete
    2. Oh the terror that is thin jersey pants! I feel you on that. Big time. But I have to say, these look great on you, and like I said above, I actually love the shorter length on you, and I'd turn 'em up another inch even! I always tend to go to H&M for my sweats, I honestly don't remember the last pair I've had that are not from there in the last.... decade? Then again, I am not brave enough to venture out in them, so, slobbiness not too much of an issue ;)
