Black Boots

Tuesday 22 October 2013

There are a few blogs which directly influence my wardrobe. One of them is Marlene's. She says what's floating her boat and I go "yeah". I am a sheep. Baaa.

And not only am I a sheep, I am a cheap sheep at that. Baaa.

She featured these See by Chloe boots a few times in her montages.

Love them. Only £350 for ownership privileges. Hmmm. Guess I'll be taking my usual walk on the cheap side.

These are the Medwinds Cavallet boot. The similarities are not lost on me :o)

I was having a browse on the Instyle website a couple of months back and they were doing a feature on boots. The Medwinds featured on them and I thought "Hmmm ... nice". And then forgot about them as I played a game of chicken on Ebay over a pair of Allsaints boots which I should have purchased during the summer sale. Needless to say, I didn't win them. Needless to say, I won't have learnt my lesson. Needless to say I'll probably do it again. Pah!

The Medwinds boots that I forgot about were chanced upon once again when I was browsing through Yoox and I thought -"Hmm ... those look alright!" and then I realised they were the boots I had seen previously. The Boot Gods work in mysterious ways you know! The heel height is perfect for everyday stomping and the toe is a lovely almond shape - I can't do with overly pointy and I can't do with too rounded. They have to be the perfect shape to elongate your feet which has a knock on lengthening effect on your legs. Oh yes, they also come up higher than your average ankle boot - good for balancing out carrot legs. They are also a nice soft smooth leather and something which you don't often get, they are leather lined. But bestest, best of all, you don't even need to fiddle with the buckles to put them on. Big yay from all us lazy moos out there.

My boots - being gently broken in - note the soft creasing.

I did actually buy some M&S ones before I got the Medwinds but then wised up over what wasn't floating my boat with the M&S ones. They were basically too high for an every day boot though they made my legs look good which in the past would have been reason enough to keep them. This enlightenment coincided with this insightful post from Kali which explains what she considers when she purchases something. Her example of what made her perfect boots echoed my requirements almost exactly.  I found myself nodding like that dog from Churchill.

And to prove a case in point. I used to have a lovely pair of Belstaff heeled boots. It took me ages to take the plunge to purchase them as they weren't cheap but I eventually gave in to the call. I wore them probably a handful of times in the 7 years or so I had them. I finally let them go to a new owner who compensated me enough to buy my Medwinds and a few other bits.

God love Ebay.

  1. Hooray! I know you've been craving black boots for a while now, I'm so glad you found your match! And they look great, I can see you living in them. Ad so cool that you don't actually have to buckle them. I say a pair of boots at Zara the other day that I totally fell in love with, a sort of Saint Laurent knock-off combat boot with tons of belts and buckles going around it, but you had to actually literally manually undo EACH buckle (and there were tons) to get them on. What?! Who has time for that? Ridiculous. Anyway, great find! And so smart of you to sell your old unworn ones on ebay. I have a few things I want to sell but I just never get around to it. Part of me thinks, would this really work? But if you've had success and it's been worth it that's a good motivator!

    1. I had this vision of you shouting at your husband going "Sue's got some black boots" the way you did when you thought I was getting a dog :o) And yes, so totally cool that I do not have to unbuckle them. And no I don't get that thing about all the buckles on some boots where you manually have to undo and do them up - so much easier if they put in a zip on the back or the inside of the boot just to alleviate the pain. I bet there will be a lot of pairs of them left on the shelf at the end of the day. And you should give Ebay a go. Sometimes it really pays off ... and sometimes it's a lot of aggro for not a lot. Depends on how covetable your old stuff is. Don't know till you try .....

  2. They are SO similar - YAY!! Well done you. I refuse to discuss boots as I have too many and it makes me feel slightly sick. I'd much rather talk about your boots!! So perfect for you.

    1. Yay. Pat on back for me. I did good. And I'd rather talk about your boots than mine ... so how many pairs do you have exactly????

  3. They are lush - really lovely - similar to the AllSaints jodhpur boot too. You always influence me - you remind me that simplicity can be best - you always look perfectly stylish but never contrived. xx

    1. They have shades of the All Saints boots about them. I just can't believe I didn't pull my finger out when I had the opportunity to get them for a song in the sales. I was in this stupid mindset that I was going to get the grey ones that I originally coveted and no other would do and even though I tried the black ones and really liked them (more than the grey), I told myself I needed grey boots. Come September, I was telling myself I needed black boots. Ho hum.

  4. Sue, you ALWAYS crack me up. I tell you this all the time. I try not to read your blog when I'm out in the public because I've gotten "is she right in the head" type of looks for laughing for no apparent reason whatsoever. I'm easily led too. Baaaaa...... I went to check out Medwinds and bloody heck, NONE in my size. I've got the next 15 mins free so I'm going to google like mad.

    1. I would have told you about them sooner but no small sizes for you. And I really did think that you had already bought the See by Chloe ones - only the best for you! Shame they didn't work out as they actually made the in a size 2 on Shoescribe.

Anyway, I now like your hubby's Barbour. Baaaa...

    2. Le sigh. Still none in my size after frantic googling. Anyways.... the See by Chloe ones really dig into my little bony ankles. I was in pain every time I tried to walk. I was pretty gutted until I bought the Zara ones. They're not as refined as the See by Chloe boots but they're not bad especially for the price.

  5. The Medwinds are an excellent homage to the Chloe boots!! They sound just perfect for you too!! Indeed we must all give thanks to eBay.....I would be stuck with many a pair of unwanted boots otherwise (I have just managed to flog 3 pairs on there!!)! Now off to research finding the perfect pair of black boots for me! x

    1. Was it three out and three more in? I know about the Rag & Bones, I know about the tan studded ones and is there a third yet to be named and shamed? Or is that the black pair you're researching which will eventually make it's way in to your shoe cupboard?

  8. You make me laugh...... Brilliant find! Yes I am a sheep, one of the biggest in the field because I may stop looking for bikers/calf length and go for something like yours now. Gotta love the bay, funded my summer wardrobe xx

    1. Do love the bay when I can pull my finger out.

And I love my boots even more when I see they have shades of Chanel about them too as seen here http://www.the-working-girl.com/2013/10/roseanna-mai-skirt/

  9. Ooooo they are stunning, similar to my Jones Bootmaker black ones but so much more elegant. I'm having an awful time with black boots at the minute, the Ash ones are a no go, I even tried both the spiral and jalouse in 2 sizes each. But alas it's not to be! Have to admit to being a bit of a sheep myself, baaaaa! X

    1. So the Ash didn't work out then? That's a shame as they have such good reviews on Mumsnet (or so I hear). And my boots are a touch smarter than what I was initially going for but I don't think that's a bad thing.

I've started something here haven't I? Everyone is baa'ing at me.

  10. I bleat happily away, too. And I always pay as little as I think I need to. Possibly not the most shocking news you have heard from! Which blogs influence me? Yours definitely does. Even though we dress very differently, your practical approach to mending and solving problems, as well as your sensible and thorough eye when purchasing have influenced how I shop. Re what influences how I dress, I think its probably mainly Pinterest. Even if I don't copy a look, its so helpful to see good colour and texture combinations. And as to my boot situation, I am most definitely not sorted, and am forever on the prowl.

    1. I thought you had boots all covered off? You have black ones, red ones and tan ones. But it never ends does it? Because you can have black high ones, black low ones, black ones for dresses, black ones which work only with certain jeans and so it goes on. I love making a case for new boots. And Pinterest. I only do it every now and then but I will get on board properly at some point and then I will be lost to the real world.

  12. I totally get the inspiration, Marlene is super cool. I tend to find there are a few people whose style resonates with me and often I'll end up with something they own or have mentioned, although as a result of both my own wanting it already, or realising that it is perfect. Funny thing isn't it?!

    1. I think it's kind of strange how it kind of seeps in to your subconscious and you're not even aware of it happening. The only two thing stopping me copying you is (1) my legs are nothing like yours (2) budget. Otherwise ... baaa.

    2. If I have Jamie-Lee's legs.....oh what the heck, her entire body, I'll be showing off my limbs in short skirts too. Baaaaaaa....

    1. Hi Sarah, do you want to drop me a line on my email at the top of the page and I will jot some down for you. Some are on my blog roll but it can be a difficult to work out what kind of blog they are just from the titles.

  14. I've never heard of medwind but they are quite nice versions of the sbc ones. i actually quite like them for myself! for the longest time the jeffrey campbell brit boots were my perfect boot but when i finally got a pair the leather was no where near as slouchy as it looks! i tried pretty much everything short of beating it to a pulp to soften the leather but two years later still pretty stuff. just sold them last week.

some times things just jump out at me, like that navy bag from your earlier post for example, now I've just been obsessing about a navy bag :P

  15. Both boots are so cool! I'm a sucker for black "walkable" boots especially come fall-winter. It's like coats, I can't seem to stop myself from wanting and sometimes buying more than I reasonably need...
