Baseball Hat

Sunday 6 October 2013

Well if you can't wear a baseball cap for your boy's first football match, when can you wear one?

Matalan baseball cap, H&M scarf, Primark Parka, F&F cashmere jumper

I donned this for Ben's first football match. The match where we were slaughtered 3-0 and I became embarrasing mom shouting stuff like "COME ON GUYS, WHERE'S THE DEFENCE????". 15 mins spent watching a football game and suddenly I'm an expert.

I don't think it's that bad - it doesn't have any logos or weird stuff printed on it - just a plainish grey tweed. And the Grumps didn't clutch his sides laughing when he saw me in it. Actually, he didn't say anything  at all but gave me that quizzical look as if to say "If you must darling".

I love Joanna's cap - now that's a statement baseball cap but I'm too scared for anything like that. I like Jamie-Lee's hat too but can't rock it in that fashion way. However, I think I can just about get away with this cap on a football pitch. Yes?

The other good thing about this is it acts as a good sun shield when you're driving if you angle it just right. Just thought I'd tell you that.

-----------------------------

Last Note :

  • My cap was £2.50 in store but full price online. I just got lucky I guess.
  • Stella McCartney does a rather luxe one here. And if she's doing baseball caps, it's fashion right?
  • I actually know the offside rule.

    1. Thanks Sharron. You do wonder if you're losing it sometimes when you buy something like that but if nothing else, it will keep my head warm for the rest of the football season. It's too premature to bring out the fur trapper hat yet.

  2. I am totally in love with your cap. I'm being dead serious. I love that it's not the standard canvas, it looks somehow richer and more dignified, but still just a great traditional tomboy baseball cap. I've actually had my eye on a black wool one at H&M these days that's very similar, but now that I've seen yours I kind of want grey.

    1. I spotted a leopard print one in H&M which I tried on and thought it was rather fun but not very me. Black would have been good if I'd seen it. But I'm pretty sure they had some grey ones in H&M in the mens. And I've just checked and they have. I knew I’d tried one on in there. And it’s almost identical to mine http://www.hm.com/gb/product/13200?article=13200-A. I didn’t buy it on the day as I think I was having hat doubt i.e would I wear it. I always have a look in the mens departments for their hats (big head and all that) so I was pretty happy when I came across my little cheap and cheerful. These things make you happy you know.

    1. Ooh - look forward to seeing your new hat then. I love hats but I find them quite challenging to wear but I think it's all in the mind more than anything. However, this baseball cap is actually quite comfortable - I even wore it to the park today to shelter from the sun (yes we had sun)!

  5. it's gorgeous, Sue! would love to see it on backwards, all the cool kids are doing it... (or they were in the 90s) x

    1. Fen ... you are joking aren't you? Wearing it backwards? No - seriously, not going there. And I'm not doing a snapback either. Now they really do look bad on me. And yes I have tried one.

    1. Take a trip Michelle. You can make that budget of yours go really far in there! But remember to do lots of trying on or it might be just me who's got weird feet.

  7. I bought a pink and black one in a sports shop in NYC - I am sure the logo on it belongs to an actual team but I only bought it for the colors, woops. It is great for running in, keeping my ponytail bouncy and light drizzle out of my eyes.

(By "running" I mean "that one time I ran")

    1. Of course yours would be pink and black! And I have to say, they are easier to wear than you first think. Sounds so cute - pony tail all bouncy!

    1. No you can't. My mouth kind of runs away with me and I say things which I shouldn't. And I get kind of all excitable. I can never watch the Wimbledon finals - it's all too much. I can't do tension. And I'm not competitive .... much.

    1. Well I hope you're getting loads of wear out of your lovely baseball cap. It's lush. You can send it my way anytime you get bored of it. I'm feeling a lot braver having worn one out of the door now.

    2. Well over here a baseball cap is all part of the every day uniform - you look odd if you're not wearing one or a visor:)

  11. I need to take a trip to Matalan as I liked the ballet pumps in your last post also. No harm in doing a little Mummy shouting at your little boy's match... x

And thanks for the lovely comment - definitely feeling more settled! Did you see the flowers I got from a former client?! I had tried to post it on thurs but it had saved in my draft so just added it the other day really. They were so beautiful!

    1. Hannah, I think I was more bothered than Ben. And you can disown me now but I actually enjoyed wearing my cap and may do so again in the near future and not on a football pitch!

I did see those flowers and isn't it nice to feel appreciated? There's not enough of that going around these days is there? Hope you have fun shopping for your new work wardrobe!

  14. I tried the baseball cap, and you know, I'm still not really sure it was 'my' thing. So now it's forlornly sitting in my cupboard, wishing to be worn again.

Yours looks so good, and the price?!!!

    1. Oh that's a shame - the one you've got is lovely. Can you not wear it more casually which is the only way I can pass this off rather than as a main fashion thing? Mine is very much a cheap and cheerful but helps to scratch the itch. It's actually quite well made but the one downer is that it has a cheap plastic clip fastening at the back instead of a preferred metal catch to adjust the size up and down. It would have looked more expensive then (from the back) but for £2.50 or full price £5, I can't ask too much and besides I can't see it from the back and I don't think anyone's really looking.

All failing - there is always Ebay for reselling. Would be a shame for your lovely cap to remain redundant.

  15. Love it! It really suits you and because it's so plain, its practically verging on elegant! I love hats ... although I tend to veer towards the baker boy style, which according to my OH makes me look like Oliver. Pah! Men!

    1. I don't actually suit hats that much especially baseball caps but this one was okay. Or maybe I've just been trying on all the wrong ones previously (ones which belonged to the Grumps).

Will we be seeing a baker boy hat on your blog any time soon?

  16. I liking the cap and what a bargain. I don't suit them unfortunately. I don't suit any hats, even wooly ones. :(

    1. For £2.50 I can afford to go wrong but if it works out, then definitely what a bargain! And I don't suit many hats - I do honestly struggle but it might be down to trying the wrong ones previously. Believe it or not - the wooly ones are pretty tricky to get right. I can do them but not if they look like they are suctioning my head off.

  17. Like the cap a lot. Giggling that you understand the offside rule, been going to footie matches since I was 16 and still don't understand the offside rule!

  18. You are bonkers!! but lovely with it. I just cannot get away with hats, they a) look stupid on me and b) completely finish off my hair in the worse way possible! I like the logo less look, it looks far more cool. xx The things we do for our offspring.

    1. Aww thanks Helen. I'll take that as a compliment. I have to admit, I don't like hat head much but I guess it comes with the territory and besides, you can always put your hat back on!

    1. The pinstriped scarf - no sorry - this was from last year's men's collection from H&M. I pounced on it when I saw it and they had it in a grey as well. I can see it on you too - hehe!

  21. I love that baseball cap! So much I will be calling my mother tomorrow and having her go and pick one up for me:) I am a big baseball cap fan. I am not the sophisticated straw hat lady by the swimming pool or beach - it is a baseball cap all the way, especially when out running or watching Xander play football. Thanks for the heads up on this one, I think you looked fabulous in it too!

  22. I love baseball caps in general. Except the hat hair part! Love the plain grey tweed, and only 2.50!! it looks expensive! i've also got my eye on a leather one but i can't decide if that's insanity since it's getting really warm here

    1. Not insanity - you have to do the leather one. It's so totally you. I couldn't see you in anything too basic so the black leather is the perfect Steph touch. Get purchasing. If you can't wear it right now - just save it for autumn. It will be back before you know it.
