Always Be Prepared - Dyb, Dyb, Dyb, Dob, Dob, Dob

Monday 14 October 2013

This morning, the larder was bare. A trip to the supermarket it was then. No casually thrown in items of clothing amongst the brocolli and the orange juice today although I may have sneaked in a copy of Vogue. Got to keep with the trends and all that, you know.

And guess what? I was recognised whilst grocery shopping! Someone actually recognised me from my blog. Again. Let me tell you now, it is really weird. You go round throwing things in your trolley nilly willy and then someone says "Hi, I recognise you ...." and then you think "Eeek" and then you think "Bog (substitute with stronger word for full impact), I have no make up on, I haven't brushed my hair and I hope I haven't got anything weird in my trolley". But hi Cheryl! Lovely to meet you! Excuse me while I curl up and die in a ball of excruciating embarrassment.

Anyway what was I wearing when I was spotted? Nothing very exciting as I was dressed for the dreary weather and not for being spotted.

M&S altered coat, Uniqlo down jacket, Uniqlo Heattech vest, Zara belt, H&M Jeans

The Uniqlo down jacket has been worn a few times now. It's quite easy to pull on over a jumper or a light top but I'm going to be honest, it's warmish but not that warm. I'm not sure if I'm expecting too much but the jurys out on this one for now. If I remember I'll let you know my views on it come January when I've put it through it's paces.

The grey altered coat has come back from the dry cleaners and will be worn a lot again this year - I can feel it in my bones. I think this is just one of those workhorse throw it on coats. It's grey, it fits big jumpers underneath, it has great pockets for jamming your hands in - what's not to love?

And the Burberry cashmere scarf? I love this scarf regardless of whether it's in fashion or not but I'm so glad I "acquired" this especially after flicking through the afore mentioned Vogue and spotting a Burberry cashmere scarf featured in one of it's trending sections. There's nothing like a bit of Vogue affirmation to make you feel good about your sartorial choices.

Anyway, what have I learned from this little experience today? That I should always be prepared (like the Scouts) and wear a teeny tiny bit of makeup (unlike the Scouts) when out in public places. And I have started by buying this ....

Baby steps, baby steps. This blogging mullarkey is setting me off on make up roads unknown.

Last Note :

  • Have you ever wondered what the Scout saying "Dyb, dyb, dyb. Dob, dob, dob" means? It means, Do your best, do your best, do your best. Do our best, do our best, do our best.

  • You have been enlightened. As was I when I googled it.

  1. You're famous now, Sue! Mwahahahaha..... sorry, couldn't resist! You're dressed better than I am. I haven't bothered to even wear jeans lately. Yup, track pants.

  2. It's strange when people recognise you isn't it? I haven't had that too often but it's nice I suppose to know that people are reading huh!

And good to know about the Uniqlo down jacket, I was tempted to get one myself, not that it ever gets that cold in Wellington... really :)

    1. Well it's not that bad - I have spent the last two evenings in it just to take the edge off and it has kind of done the job. It's not heavy duty so probably perfect for your climes actually. Size XS for you. You're teeny!

    1. Lovely to see you Cheryl. Sorry for being so gormless. Just wasn't expecting it to be such a small world out there :o)

  4. ooohh, totally famous! You'll be fighting off the paparazzi in no time! You look great to me. You know I love that coat. And now that I have my own little ultralight down jacket (yes, I did it!) it makes me super happy to see others in theirs. I don't think it's meant to be the warmest of warmest, just a light layering piece, right? And since it's not too bulky you can layer it over and under multiple other pieces. At least, that's what I'm hoping :)

    1. You went for it! If it's the one I think you're going for - the blue print one? - it will be lovely - very versatile print. Much more so than the CDC collab with Uniqlo last year. This current collection is more subtle. And yep, you're right, it's not meant to be the warmest as it's not a strict technical garment but I hear so much about them that I think they are supposed to be the answer to my nesh prayers. Along with the heat tech vests which are good but not as warm as I thought but better than a thermal layer as they are so comfortable and soft to wear. And besides, these little jackets are much better than a gilet - cold arms, I cannot abide.

And I don't know how to set my comments up so you can follow up comments. Do you have any idea?

  5. I don't think any would ever recognise me thank goodness - they've mostly only ever seen half my face! The M&S coat is my kind of coat - in fact most of my wardrobe is of the 'throw it on' category! Liking the lip stain - let me know if it is indeed 24hr! :)

    1. Aah the lipstain. That's weird. Just goes to prove that I am a total novice and had no idea what I was buying. On one end, there is an applicator and the lip gloss goo goes on. It dries a little and with the other end, it is a conditioning balm which goes over. I got through to 2pm and ended up taking it off. It stayed on reasonably well but I was conscious that after eating, some had worn off and I was in danger of the dreaded lip linered look and then I gave my lips hell trying to scrub it off. That's when you realise how resilient this stuff is. Had to give my lips a good going over with Elizabeth Arden 8 Hour cream to bring them back up to scratch. BTW, it makes your lips feel all pruney. Having said that, I think all lipsticks make my lips feel pruney.

  6. Love love your grey jacket-according to my current post, I don't need anymore winter coats/jackets, but I will make an exception for a plain flannel or wool grey coat/jacket!! The scarf was a fabulous buy and goes with everything too xx

    1. I didn't buy the scarf Sharon, I "acquired it" so it's even better as I probably wouldn't have bought it at that price. But I do love it. The colours are really sharp. And get thrifting - I'm sure you can find a grey coat.

  8. I usually always bump into the hottest boy from school when I have no make-up on and guess wha,t he is still hot, recognises me and says "Hi Sharron". I die.

    1. I've not done that yet. I'm not sure I'd recognise any hot boys from school - it's been too long. And you go out without makeup on? I now think that everyone wears makeup except for me.

  9. I love what you are wearing..... talking about Vogue there is an advert for the Uniqlo jacket similar to yours....looked nice ( made me bookmark the page anyway) I look forward to further reviews. I would die of shame if I was recognised! Ha! Love it x

    1. Well I can imagine they would only have positive things to say about you Annmarie. You always look so lovely and chic. The fit of the jacket is quite neat so wouldn't add bulk if you are interested. Think of it as a detachable lining for some of your thinner coats and then you can see it coming in to a world of it's own.

  12. Love your whole outfit Sue, you certainly looked the part of super stylish blogger when you were recognised! The scarf looks amazing against the grey of your coat.......you have given me an idea too! The DH has an Aquascutum club check scarf that might just magically find it's way in to my wardrobe! It will go perfectly with my new pea coat! See, there you go.....inspired by you again. Lovely, thanks x

    1. I have to say there's not much I can borrow out of my hubs' wardrobe apart from his scarves - everything else is huge. I'd look like a jumper with feet if I tried to borrow any of his knitwear. But Acquascutum check scarves sound perfect especially with a pea coat. Will keep checking Avenue 57 to see when it pops up :o)

  13. Just catching up on your posts after my week away. I needed to restock the fridge and a copy of Vogue found its way into my trolley too! I love your scarf - definitely scarf weather here too.

    1. Oh yes - scarves are resurfacing. I'm trying to see where all mine have disappeared to, I put the winter ones away and I can't remember where. Doh.

  14. Oh, that's really quite nice that you were recognised. Says me who will continue to take headless shots... I love grey - cannot have too much of it. Ditto workhorse coats. It's going to be a cold winter - giddy up workhorse winter woollies!

    1. It's quite strange but now I wonder if I've been spotted before and was I doing anything weird. Hopefully not. I have to say, I don't think I'd ever recognise you but I might be able to pick you out in a headless line up.

  15. Aw Sue u look lovely as always, love that grey combo, grey is fast becoming my go to colour too! I would die if I was recognised, as I'm usually running about in a rush or battling with the wee man while out and about! X

    1. I have to say, I went supermarket shopping again yesterday ... with some makeup on. Lesson learnt. Is this what celebs have to do when they go out for a pint of milk? Just joking. And yes - be sure you will be caught telling your child off when you're spotted.

    1. Ooh - are you a bit of legend at home then?

24 hr lipstain is not 24 hr. Well it does have some good staying power but I hated it making my lips feel all prunelike so I took it off and that took some scrubbing off. But if it lasted 24 hours, I bet there would be people out there who would be thankful for it i.e. people who are never seen without makeup.

  17. I'm sure you still looked fab even without make-up:) I was at the pool this morning with a teenage spot (way beyond teenage years!!) and no option for keeping on make-up here!! Loving you Burberry scarf.
