Whistles Joy Sweater

Saturday 21 September 2013

... or the Joy Textured Side Split Knit as it is known on the website. Not really that exciting but that's a bit like most of my knitwear - plainish but versatile. And it caught the eye of Eve from All Worn Out too so it can't be that be bad and she's pretty funky (compared to me).

Whistles Joy Textured Side Split Knit

Let's start with the composition - you know this sort of thing floats my boat. The jumper is a predominantly cotton mix (71%) and the rest is 29% polyethelene (plastic!!) which is somewhat unusual but I think it's what helps give the jumper it's texture and helps it hold its shape and not crease. So that little 29% is working hard there to make sure the jumper behaves itself. And what made me get it rather than any of the other twenty or so jumpers I've tried on recently? The fit. I put it on, the sleeves were right (helps they are three/quarters anyway), the drape was flattering - skims the bagel belly - and it looked like I said before ... versatile. Oh and let's not forget, it didn't make me look a chunky monkey :o)

Whistles Joy Sweater, H&M Jeans, Zara Espadrilles

This is how I wore it running around yesterday. A somewhat subdued palate but we all have days like that don't we? Oh yes and those are the Zara silver leather espadrilles I was beating myself up about not so long ago for not buying them online in the Zara sale when I should have and then they sold out. Well ... I found a pair in store for £9.99. Beam, beam, beam.

I suppose I could bling the jumper  up with a statement necklace. This is really the only one I have got ....

Topshop necklace (old)

... but it's a beaut!. This one makes me feel like She-ra, Princess of Power. And it weighs a tonne. You know how you pick up these huge necklaces sometimes and they are actually as light as a feather? This one's not. That woman with her face in her plate of food? That's me when my neck can't support the weight of this necklace anymore. I found this a couple of years ago on the Topshop website reduced from £75 to £10. How could I resist? The intention was to wear it at the time with a bright yellow jumper that I had but I never got round to it. Two statements in one outfit and I would have fainted from the effort of being that fashionable.

So back to something simpler, just black courts and skinny jeans. Which just happens to be what Whistles is recommending on their website for what to wear it with for an easy evening look. I just pushed the boat out a bit with the necklace to make it look like I tried for once.

Topshop necklace, H&M courts, H&M jeans

But I think it's really a day jumper, which I will enjoy wearing with an assortment of existing coats and footwear ...

Coat 1.

Primark parka (eons old), Office Namesake boots (old)

Coat 2.

Gap trench, Russell & Bromley flats, Hobbs NW3 bag (all old)

Coat 3.

Maison Scotch coat, Mulberry bag (all old)

Honestly, in the autumn, winter months, it's going to be all about the coats which is why I have quite a collection and that's okay because that's all people really see on the school run. But that little Joy jumper and a pair of black jeans is the perfect foil for all the different coats isn't it? Translated, that means I was too lazy to change in to another pair of jeans.

And did anyone notice that little bracelet I wore at the top of the post? It just so happened that I ordered Joy on the day that Whistles were offering a free London Fashion Week goodie bag with all orders. In my goodie bag, I received this rose gold coloured bracelet ...

So happy to receive bling (even if it's only tiny not real bling)

... as well as a bottle of Revlon's Cool Beige polish. It's luvverley.

Just imagine the milkiest weakest latte ever. That's the colour!

Beam. Beam. Beam.

  1. Fab jumper on you - absolutely perfect. I like it best as a day jumper too. Perfect with skinnies and the assortment of coats you have :-) I too suit the less chunky variety of jumpers as I'm only 5'2" and I look like I'm drowning in anything that's even moderately chunky (though I love them on other people and often try them knowing they won't work for me). I'd be excited by it too! Lynne x

    1. It's a good day jumper - I agree. Very easy to wear and keeps it's shape too as I gave it a test run the other day. I was going to leave it hanging for a while but I was lured out by Eve to show it so I put it on and carried on wearing it.

And I do that chunky jumper thing too because I love them but they don't suit me either. And I don't know why I try long jumpers - well I do, to hide my bum - but they do absolutely nothing for me whatsoever. I need to keep my shapes neat but who doesn't love a sloppy jumper eh?

  2. Love it! And I love the 3/4 sleeves. Think how cute it would look over a black button-down or something as well, with a little collar and sleeve peeking out. Also, your parka is a rugged thing of beauty. And now I want one just like it. Doh!

    1. I love jumpers which do 3/4 sleeves. With my short arms, it sorts out all manner of problems with too long sleeves which I cannot abide. I think I need to find quite a neat shirt (soft) to see how this would look under a jumper but I think you're right, a black button down would be good.

I remember you liked the parka before ... I can see it's your style.

    2. Well, even if I am apparently repeating the same things over and over, I am glad I'm at least being consistent ;)

    3. Consistent is good. It means you know what it's like. It's what I say to the Grumps when he buys the same shirt again (he has actually done this - I have two identical shirts as proof in his wardrobe).

    1. You'll have to order it soon before they sell out. I've seen it featured on several blogs so it's one of their definite winners this season.

  4. Ah I do look forward to your blog posts. Long time lurker here, finally got around to commenting.

Love the Whistles jumper. I usually treat myself to one or two pieces from Whistles a couple of times a year. Not sure what i will go for this time but everything I have bought has been money well spent.

    1. Hi Claire! So glad you commented and that you enjoy reading :o)

Oh Whistles are having a rocking season this year. I went in the newly refurbished store in Leeds the other day and it was just lovely. I have my eye on so many things but realistically, they are more of a treat for me. But if I find something which just works and fits, I do try to go for it if its within a budget. I've learnt from past mistakes that it's sometimes not worth getting the cheaper version of something because it doesn't always scratch the itch. It also gets expensive when you end up buying both the cheap and the expensive version. I'm now waiting for a Grazia promotion before I step in store again.

  6. That's my kinda jumper Sue (you probably knew that though!) - love it with the jeans/boots/parka. Liking the necklace (I haven't really got a statement necklace - well not such a big one anyway - oooh err!).

    1. This is a "quiet and unassuming" little jumper. Nice for people who don't want to make too much of a statement but look kind of together because it's really well made and such a nice fit. I think it's going to be a good investment.

  7. Perfect jumper! Like you, I struggle with the chunky knits ... as much as I love them on others, they just swamp me. But that Joy is a perfect, neat and cosy looking fit. And I think it's definitely a day jumper. Good buy :)

    1. We can cry over the fact that we can't wear big chunky knits together. I have this idea that I will look lost in a waify kind of way in a big comfy knit but the reality is a 40+ woman who couldn't buy a jumper to fit. And I agree on the day jumper consensus.

  8. Lovely jumper Sue and it will be very versatile indeed. I've been looking for some winter knitwear but haven't got a chance to get physically shopping as u think knitwear need to be felt before buying. Although with higher end stuff the quality should be pretty good anyway! Love that Maison Scotch coat, it's about the only colour coat I'm missing! X

    1. Jumpers can be a bit of a minefield and even the acrylics can give you a bit of a run for your money sometimes - Zara are doing some really good looking acrylic jumpers which could pass as cotton on first glance (bums me out that I can get duped like that). And I think we've both missed out on the Gap graphic sweater as well - all our sizes sold out (phew - I think).

The Maison Scotch coat is fun (but heavy). This is one of those heavy wool ones rather than an acrylic, wool, polyester mix which makes them so much lighter to wear. But the colour is good ... brightens up the dull mornings which are coming soon.

You look amazing and I am so ready for the jumper season ahead of us!

    1. I'm nearly ready for the jumper season. I haven't got my winter knits out yet. I'm waiting for these couple of promised sunshine days to pass and then I will go up to the spare clothes boxes and dig them out and retire the remaining summer wear. Eeek ... there goes summer.

And yes the necklace was a bargain. I couldn't believe the reduction either but I genuinely did like the necklace so it became a bit of a no brainer. Can't wear it without fiddling with it all night though - it is heaveeee.

  10. Hi Sue-I really love how you've styled the sweater, it goes with so many Autumn pieces that you have so I'm sure you'll wear it loads, it looks great! Love those espadrilles too! xxx

And the espadrilles - so glad I managed to track some down. Too comfy for words and I wholeheartedly believe that I will be wearing these a lot next spring/summer. I love it when I get a good bargain.

    1. Very old parka. But I love it. Most that I see on the high street are just a little big and long in the body for me but this one works on me and the fact that it was really cheap makes me that much happier given the amount of service it's given me. The ones from Primark over the last few years have not been as nice as they usually add some silly pleather trim which has been badly stitched on but this parka is thankfully remiss of such details.

    1. So lovely to get the goodie bag and to find something nice that I could imagine wearing and buying. It's all very well getting goodie bags but not if they are filled with stuff that you have no need for (like peppermint teabags or a bar of horrid chocolate). I think I was almost more excited by the contents of the goodie bag than the jumper itself.

  14. cute jumper sue. I love the way it looks with the maison scotch coat, what a brilliant colour! and the parka too!

so glad you got those silver espadrilles too, what a bargain! same thing happened to me with the pony hair sneakers. some times it's better to just go in store and cross your fingers huh? online shopping has me so spoiled though. much easier to sit here and shop. haha.

  15. Love love love! I love how you dress it up and down. In fact, you've inspired me to do the same with my jumpers. I've been eying on jumpers lately. The 3/4 sleeves are right up my alley. I'm not too keen on having sleeves that I constantly have to pull up. Drives me bonkers when I'm cooking or going about with my chores.

    1. I love 3/4 sleeves. Most of my jumpers and cardigans are 3/4 sleeves and if they're not, they end up being 3/4 sleeves as I have to shrug them up. The Whistles 25% promotion has just launched this week - they are having such a good season.
