Sunny Days and a Simple Jersey Dress

Sunday 2 June 2013

I had the legs properly out for the first time this year. So not this dressing up and prancing around on the landing in a dress business but out out. Like out of the door out. On went my little blue fine stripe H&M jersey dress (£7.99). It's quite a thin jersey, plain but comfy and doesn't blow up when the wind fancies a nosey up your skirt. I got this last year but they're doing them again this year but in different colours (so no blue ones like mine) and of course they are not online. A plain black one might be on the cards at some point. Might be.

This is how I wore it for chilling out with the boys at home. Less is more.

H&M Jersey Dress (last year), Zara Sandals (last year)

But for those who don't subscribe to less is more - try a Moonstone lariat necklace. This dress doesn't call for a neon bling number - just something a little more subtle in tone. I know there's a lot of people out there who like that little extra something and don't mind a bit of jingle jangle to pull an outfit together. Looks a bit more finished now? Rather than "grabbed first thing I could find?".

That's a "I'm concentrating on getting an in focus shot" rather than "misery guts" face.

It's quite a useful little dress because it is so simple. Perfect for the school run teamed with Converse and a little saddle bag. I'm still feeling good about ordering my Zatchels bag in navy - it's working well for me in this colour. No regrets. But still wish it had a magnetic fastening.

And it works brilliantly as a little holiday dress. Use your imagination and pretend that I'm in Spain wandering down one of the little cobbled streets going "perdon! perdon!", trying to find my way back to the hotel.

Primark trilby, Tatty bag, Asda silver flip flops,

Or for a more of a wander around the city shops look ..... different necklace, different shoes, different bag.

Tesco (yup) Basket (old)
Susie Ho Pewter Lariat (can be worn long or short)

So it would appear a nice simple jersey dress can tick quite a few boxes. Here's a few which have caught my eye too and could be worn in a similar vein. They don't look like very much but that's the beauty of them - it's for you to do what you like. And I wouldn't say no to any of them if they were to make their way in to my wardrobe.

So do you have a little do it all day dress?

------------------------------

Last note.

  • For some reason, when I was small, my family had a small Spanish phrase book which I tried to learn Spanish from. The only thing I can remember from it is "Ten cuidado con las medusas" which I believe translates as "watch out for the jelly fish". Weird. A little. It's funny what sticks in my little mind.

  1. Love it! Just got back from holiday and wish I'd seen it before. I did actually spend an awful lot of time stumbling over cobbled streets, muttering 'perdon' as I crashed the pram around :/ If I find this dress or one of those similar, I will definitely get it for the rest of summer!

    1. I wore it in Greece for my last summer holiday and it was perfect for wandering around in because it's light and just a nice cover up. Oh - prams and cobbled streets - not a good mix.

  2. Yey for the legs being out!! How versatile is that dress, I would love it in grey (there has to be a grey) but I'm on a sort of shopping ban along with Fiona I have so much new stuff I haven't worn yet so I've had to draw the line!!!

    1. I did spot a grey one actually ... but that was during the winter. Great in the winter in grey as a little mini dress with tights though it's not very thick. So ... the shopping ban. What is a "sort of" shopping ban?

  3. Got my legs out too today and then added leggings! There is no hope - got to hit the 20 s I feel for me to brave the bare legs! Love this dress - it would get a lot of wear from me too!

    1. It would be very short on you Claire. You would have to wear it with leggings! I thought it was time to give the legs an airing. They've got to come out some time!

  4. I LOLed to "perdon perdon". I imagine I'd be like that too.
The dress is lovely but because of my ample boobage I can only dream of wearing a shape like that. :/
I like it in all the incarnations you showed us.

    1. Aah - ample boobage. That is not something I suffer from. You suit the nipped in and out shapes. I have an in and out shape - I just like to hide it.

  5. I have that dress! In blue, too. I really like the way you styled it. It always feels a bit clingy on me. Have you tried it with any other kind of belt?

    1. Kate - it will be a tunic on you - you are so tall. Do you wear it as a mini? I've not tried it with any other belts - I'm a bit rubbish with things around my waist and even with this dress, I tie it very loosely so (1) it doesn't make the dress any shorter and (2) I don't feel trussed up.

      How do you wear it?

  6. I love that dress on you! Blue is really great for your colouring and the jewels are all gorgeous. I have an old black jersey shirt dress by Jaeger which is exactly the same shape as yours but sleeves at elbow and the drawstring is a navy grosgrain ribbon. I can do anything with that dress but only when I haven't been to all you can eat buffets - I bought a size too snug d'uh!

    1. Your Jaegar dress sounds a lot more upmarket than mine - the jersey will or should be a nice weight. I don't know if blue is my colour - I've just taken a bit of a shine to it this year and seem to be wearing it a lot. Have you worn your dress on your blog yet?

    2. I have worn it a few times on the blog already. It's in my Spring Edit for this year but of course we didn't have one did we,so it will be coming out again now. I bought it 3 years ago but since then Jaeger hasn't made anything similar, in fact there's hardly anything I like from them in the last couple of years, usually I buy at least one or 2 things a year.

  7. Just lovely. Love the dressing up too - you do make me giggle:). Congratulations on getting the shop ready - I might make a wee purchase when I'm back xx

  8. Love the dress with the converse and flip flops Sue. I did actually get my denim skirt and legs out in the garden briefly yesterday (fed up of being stifled in jeans) - however then had to leave the house to meet a friend and the jeans were back on! I need to cover my veins with copious fake tan before they come out in public (legs that is - not veins) :)

    1. I'm sure your legs are not that bad or if they are - maxi! I dug out a couple of mine so may be wearing them soon.

I'm comfiest in the Converse too.

  9. i love jersey dresses for travelling - they take up next to no space and are so versatile and the creases on mine usually come out quite easily when i hang it in the bathroom (while having a hot shower). still loving your navy saddle bag!

    1. You get some jersey dresses which are so heavy, you only have to hang them up and all the creases drop out. I had one like that from Topshop Boutique and it was brilliant through my pregnancy too until the day I got a grease stain on it which wouldn't come out. I've tried the bathroom steam technique and it's not been that effective for me - I have a handheld steamer and a big momma one as well.

  10. I like it best with the chuckies, so cute and casual and easy. And why are you holding a spanish phrasebook and thinking about medusas and cobblestone streets? Just a fantasy or are you headed this way?

    1. Chuckies are best aren't they? Just a fantasy - I wish I was heading your way. Not been there for a few years. Last time we stayed in Port Pollenca which was lovely and had day trips in to Palma. Whereabouts are you in Spain?

  11. Sue, you've managed to make a £7.99 dress terribly chic! I haven't thought about jersey dresses in a while. Love the way you styled with the hat and sunnies. You've got me thinking seriously about buying a pair of white Converse.

    1. I thought you weren't in to Converse? But if you are - white ones are the way to go. Deffo!

    1. You love the slightly bonkers shot then! Transplant me to somewhere really hot and I might not look so calm and composed - but rather a hot, sweaty crumpled mess!

  13. I'm with Fiona! You just look effortlessly stylish and I'm well impressed with how many ways you managed to style that dress. Clearly, I won't be getting my legs out anytime soon :) although we actually had some sunshine today, so I did risk a pair of shorts in the back garden - well away from curious eyes!

  15. That's a handy little jersey dress. I bought a couple of short sleeved ones and then the weather turned nasty but it's so warm now I'm ready to get them out! Blue skies - what a treat!

  16. Ooh, I really like it! Jersey dresses are so handy in the heat.
I wonder how it would look on me, as I have quite a straight figure. I usually gravitate towards things with a nipped in waist, to give me more of a shape :)

    1. Maja, this would be a top on you - I know how tall you are. It would barely cover your bum. But that's okay - you have the legs to carry it off. And you can always pull in the waist to get the nipped in look. I wear mine loosely tied so it's a bit longer.

  18. I have a black t-shirt maxi dress that's been getting loads of wear, but I've been searching for something shorter. My problem is that I am a bit high-waisted and all of these elastic banded dresses hit me in the wrong place. The search continues.

    1. And I have the opposite problem - I have a long body and short legs. You should try some of the Boden jersey dresses - I hear good things about them.

  20. Hi sue, I bought this dress and a black one over a year ago, I've worn them to death, but I've lost weight since and are now too big so I'm glad you posted because it means I can go and replace in a smaller size, and I have some new ways of wearing them now I've seen how you've styled them. X

    1. They have them in much wider stripes this year - a bit more challenging. But they still have the black. I'm wishing they still had the grey - I should have got it when they brought it out in the winter but I was desperately trying not to buy anything grey and especially not a dress in January.

    2. And can I say how lovely you look currently. Lovely before but stunning now. I'm seriously impressed - would love to see you in one of these dresses on Avenue 57! By the way, I'm following you on there.
