Fluoro Stripes, Hair Dye and Waiting for Trains

Thursday 25 April 2013

Pardon me I have been a bit lax with the blog these last couple of days. I have been silly busy. I have been silly busy making jewellery and getting back in to the swing of all things trinkety. My workshop/cum dining room is a bomb site - but it's okay - that's how it should be instead of all neatly packed up and redundant.

And what have I been wearing? I've been wearing fluoro stripes. As my friend L2 said when she saw me on the school run - "my, that is rather bright isn't it? .... but it looks nice". You know when people add that extra remark on the end ... you know they are actually thinking "wouldn't wear it myself though". The top last featured here too (it's not all about new things you know).

Anyway, I lasted about one hour in this outfit in the morning before I changed in to dodgy looking house cleaning clothes fit for my eyes only. One day, I might treat you to the spectacle. One day.

And because I only spent an hour in the top - I wore it again the next day in to Leeds.

Gap Boyfriend Jeans, New Look pumps, Gap Trench

I had an appointment at the hairdressers for a "trim". Two days have passed and the Grumps still hasn't noticed that I've had my hair done. Infact no one's noticed. Hmmmm - maybe I should have had more than an inch off? I had a young trainee washing my hair and my ears. Yup. Ears. The young girl seemed very intent on filling my ears with suds. When she asked if I would like a head massage, I politely declined.

Hair done, I went to do a return to Zara and maybe try on a few new things which had landed in store. :o) That's when I noticed that the back of my top was rather damp and there was a stain on it. A stain which looked suspiciously like hair dye. So I headed back to the hairdressers. Do you know what they did? They put hairspray on it. The manager said it didn't look like the dye was permanent and that the hairspray would stop the stain from setting in. Do you know what - she was right. But it did have me worried. Back home, a bit of a soak and the stain's all gone.

Might not be much but it's still hair dye on my top.

So that was my little bit of excitement for the morning. And because I was scared of missing the train (did that last time - whoops) that meant that I was twenty minutes early for a train that was leaving twenty minutes later than I thought and arrived twenty minutes later than intended. Mrs Grumpy - me. Yeah. Anyway, want to see what I had for lunch?

You have lunches like this too don't you?

And that's me waiting for the train, taking pictures of myself and my feet like most bloggy people do.

Just waiting .... and waiting .... and waiting

Last note :

  • Another good tip for stain removal is to use washing up liquid or handwash on the stain and to give it a bit of a rub. Not too vigorously as you don't want to rough up the fibres too much. Has been known to remove stubborn orange coloured baby food stains from bibs (tried and tested by me).

  • Another tip is to hang your clothes outside in direct sunshine. The sunshine bleaches stains out of your clothing. Has been known to remove all manner of "stuff" (don't ask) from the kids clothes (tried and tested by me).

  • Any good clothes maintenance tips you have? I love stuff like this. I have books on it. Seriously.

  • If you like fluoro stripes, you can pick one up here.

  1. Hairspray? Thats a good one to know - what can I spray - always a stain lingering around my house. I'd have been a bit miffed with the trainee for getting it on my top though :(

    1. I was a bit miffed which is why I went back to make sure I had registered a "concern". They were very good about it and did offer to wash it for me to make sure it came out but I didn't have a spare top - only my trench and I wasn't about to have a flasher moment so I said I'd go with the hairspray.

  2. Loving yout flouro look Sue- thank god the stain came out I would have been raging! and of course I have lunches like that too- I have convinced myself I'm eating less as its not an actual meal (but realistically its usually twice the cals!).

    1. It's sorted - phew. I would have been upset as it was a top from last year and not easy to replace. I don't think they would have been happy with the bill for it if it had all gone pear shaped but I wanted to make sure they knew about it so if there was a problem and I rang up, they were aware.

Yeah - a bag of chocolate peanuts - deceptively calorific. But oh so more-ish.

  3. Ooh, I never heard about the hair spray trick! Good to know, as I have been hankering for darker hair again.. For fall, perhaps? When I dyed my hari black back in the day my boyfriend would dye at for me at home, and he did a great job! The top looks terrific on you, I would totally wear it as well. I need to stock up on some stripes again soon, mine are starting to look a bit worse for wear :)

    1. Oh - I can't imagine you with black hair. Your current colour really suits you from what I've seen on your pictures. Go darker but not black. Even I don't do black - I do very darkest brown black to make it more natural. Very few people have true black hair and when someone dyed my hair a true black once - it really did look weird so I have learnt from that one.

I'm like every other person - got to have some stripes. Hopefully the Saint James one will be along any day.

    2. Oh don't worry, I won't go black again, ever. That was my painfully goth phase ;)

  4. Love the bright and cheery stripes! And I'd never heard that about hairspray either, what a good tip! Oh, and your lunch looks delicous.

    1. It was one of those lunches where you think - yum and then afterwards you go - yack! Shouldn't have done that.

I have to say, I'm going to stick with the washing up liquid - that works. The hairspray trick seemed to work as well but somehow I'm not certain still.

  5. I love that top and I love your hair dye story! I actually HATE it when the hair washer person washes my ears and half my make up off my face!

    1. They are usually very good - it's just this one time and I think she was new - very new. Usually it's almost relaxing (or as relaxing as a hairdressing trip gets for me) but not this time. She will learn ... or get sacked.

  6. I love your top and would most certainly wear it. Great tip about the hairspray although all mine goes on my son's hair at the moment, he smells of Elnett constantly!

    1. Aah - only the best for your lad! i wonder if you get a better hairspray if it's more effective on the stain?

  7. Haha - love that lunch! Those chocolate covered peanuts are the number 1 reason to go into M&S any day. So moreish! Love the top - gutted to hear it's last season. I love breton but find navy/white a bit dull so the fluro stripe is fab. And sorry to hear the hair wasn't noticed by anyone. I have that issue too. I used to work with a lovely (non-creepy) manager who used to regularly say to the female staff 'Oh have you had your hair done'. It worked every time...even if you'd not had your hair done, you'd be all chuffed that someone thought your hair looked like it had been 'done'! Great trick for keeping the women in the office on your side! Ax

    1. Another M&S chocolate peanut fiend! I don't have them too often but sometimes they just hit the right spot with a nice hot drink. I actually really like the traditional bretons but I can't resist all the other colour options that are available too. I know they are classic but hey, it's good to let loose sometimes.

      Very creepy manager. Eugh.

  8. Not heard of the hairspray one before, thanks for sharing. I've used Tesco own (around £1) baby sterile solution on white curtains stained with dark hair dye, very slight yellow rim but not noticeable and removed the colour completely! x

    1. I got rid of all things babyish a while back and I never really went with the sterile solution. Sounds useful but I do have a big pot of Vanish under the sink as well :o)

    2. I never used for mine either but someone recommended for that hair dye stain and worked a treat! x

  9. When my friend spilled her red wine all over my husband and his favourite shirt I took great pleasure in immediately throwing my white wine all over him........it didn't remove the stain, but was fun!
Love the look, I'm a big fan of stripes....hope our lunch will be a bit more substantial!!!!

    1. Lunch will be more substantial I promise. I can't survive on just choccy peanuts and coffee.

I've heard that about the white wine vs red wine one but the hubs always says it's a waste of good wine (he only likes the good stuff and we're not allowed "very" cheap and cheerfuls in the house. Wine snob that he is.

  10. I really like the top Sue - would definitely wear it. I never knew that about hairspray - as you can imagine I have multiple cans of the stuff lying about! My hubby only ever notices my hair do because I tell him I'm going and he feels he has to! Was that all you had for lunch - think I'd have needed something more substantial - love the photos of your feet etc - once I get a 'proper' phone sorted I aim to do the same - well maybe not feet but bloggy beauty stuff! x

    1. Do you know what, the hubs turned round to me last night and said "nice hair". And I said "you read the blog didn't you?" and he nodded. And he said to ask for a bit more off next time at that price.

  11. I love your top - bought my Tween girl a cotton jumper dress with fluo pink stripes like it on a light grey background, really lovely!
I live in dread of stains as it's always such a hassle to remove them and sometimes it's permanent.
Just read lst week a trick to remove a ball pen mark on a leather bag, spray the mark with hairspray but it has to be without alcohol then you can wipe it off with a light damp cloth - it works! The only other things I know are if you spill tea on yourself, do not wet the stain as the water will make the stain permanent (but no idea what you're supposed to do!) and if you splash oil or grease on yourself, dab with a paper tissue or flour first to soak up the grease.

    1. Strange that but if I was to get tea or coffee on me, the first thing I would do is try to run it under the tap. However I have heard you should work the stain to the surface from underneath rather than pushing it in which does make sense.

  12. I love the colour of your top - perfect for spring. Just what's needed on a grey day! Great tip about washing up liquid. I find that unscented baby wipes are useful to remove a small mark but it only seems to work if you are quick enough before it sets in.

    1. I used to use baby wipes as well but have forgotten all about that one now and we don't seem to have packets lying around like we did when George was a bit smaller. And if there is one thing I can't stand - Johnsons baby wipes - the scented ones. I avoided those like the plague and anything else which smelt like strawberries. Strange but true.

  13. Thanks for the hairspray tip, that's definitely one to add to the list. I'd have been spitting if I thought my top was ruined by a hairdresser. Good for you for going back. And my idea of Heaven (even more than a creme egg!) is a packet of M&S Belgian chocolate covered peanuts ...mmmmmmm

  16. Thanks for the tips, Sue. You've managed to save my clothes. Literally. I've been wondering and googling to find out how I can remove stubborn food stains. I love that fluoro breton top of yours. Pairing it with a trench and boyfriend jeans. So chic and classy.

    1. I've been living in the trench - it seems to be my sudden go to coat now that I've broken away from the winter coats. But I could have done with one of the warmer coats today - switched the heating back on albeit briefly!

  17. that flouro looks really cute but is one of those things that i'd definitely wear if i had it but would't go out looking for if that makes sense? oh thanks for the tip about hairspray ;) i use a carpet stain remover on tougher stains (would not really recommend this on delicate clothing though)

  19. I love that fluoro striped top! And paring it with the trench was very chic. I've not dared venture into neon yet but this one is pretty safe and gives a twist to "boring" stripes.
