Dior Nail Glow

Friday 29 March 2013

I have a new nail polish. So what? I have lots of nail polishes as I have shown in a previous post. But this is the only nail polish that I (and the Grumps) deem good enough to sit on the old finger nails (I never do polish on my hands normally). Polish is wasted on my hands - they are ravaged by too much hand washing (not of an OCD but of a compulsory nature) and I can't do a decent paint job with the left hand anyway.

I came across this polish when I was reading Emily-Jane's Monday's Child's blog just last week and it sounded totally up my street. I like Emily Jane's blog - she does short but sweet posts and she has a pair of the Kooples boots which I wanted so badly. That's how I found her - via the boots. That's how I found Clare at A Life Less Ordinary - via her sandals. I'm weird like that and I really shouldn't be confessing to these weird stalkerish quirks. I just like to see how other people wear things I have or want.

Anyway, it's a varnish which gives a sheer sweep of colour in the most natural way. Lovely.

I hunted it down at the Dior counter. Tried it on a couple of fingers and went home. I needed to see if it would pass the Grumps test. And what is the Grumps test ? The Grumps test is that he doesn't hate it on sight and he doesn't do the childish retching face. It passed the test and so I bought it whilst there was a 10% off offer on cosmetics at Debenhams.  A saving of £1.80. You do the maths.

And for your delectation - here's what it looks like on three nails starting from the left. The nail on the right has been left unpainted so you can see the difference.

See - there is a difference!

You could argue that I could have saved myself some money and just put a clear polish on and achieved a similar effect but honestly, it does have a little something about it - it just glows! Hence it's name! It has the slightest pinkish tint and it makes my hands look that little bit nicer and my nails that little bit more finished. They look healthy! See!

Pretty in Pink!

So it's not often that I actually talk about anything remotely beauty like but I like this Dior polish a lot. I'm not saying it's everyone's cup of tea - a bit too pale and uninteresting for a lot of people but for a girl who doesn't wear polish, this is a nice gentle way to ease in to it. And if it starts to chip or anything, no one will really notice. And if I paint it on badly - you won't really be able to tell either. Brilliant.

But now I really must stop admiring my lovely pale rose hued nails and get a life.

Happy Easter everyone.

Last Note :

  • If you google Dior Nail Glow - you will find loads of pictures from people who have done a better job of painting their nails with this polish than me and you will get a better idea of the pink glow. I noticed it also has a touch of the lilac about it when outside in natural daylight. Cool.
  • The Grumps conceded that my nails looked better with the Dior Nail Glow on than without. Yuuusss!  Get in there!

  1. I really like that. It definitely does make a difference ... more polished (pardon the pun!) Very elegant indeed. Happy Easter :)

    1. It's definitely subtle but I like it for that very reason. Happy Easter Helen!

  2. It's gorgeous - I love how natural it is yet as you say it has a little something extra. Perfect for summer:)

    1. Absolutely perfect for summer! And I can put this one on in bish bash bosh style and not be worried about how good and neat I am. Perfect for cackhanders like me.

  3. This is really lovely! My daughter announced to me that I wasn't "allowed" to wear nail polish at school and I suddenly thought perhaps I shouldn't wear such bright polishes when I'm teaching?! This would be perfect....

    1. Definitely give it a go. Even if it's just a swipe at the Dior counter like I did before I commited to a purchase. It will look different against different skin tones and nail beds but I think if it works for you, it will be really good and subtle (then you won't get told off by your daughter).

  4. That is gorgeous, it would work for me too as my nails get chipped within hours of painting them so I have resorted to wearing nude all the time cos I can't be bothered with the hassle, so this one would sut me down to the ground!

    1. I think this one is quite tough actually going by the hammer my hands get being in and out of water and clearing up after the small people. It's one of the reasons I don't put polish on as I hate anything which looks short of perfect so if there were noticeable chips, it would have to come off straight away. The beauty of something like this is I hope it will just dull down and then no one notices the imperfections.

  6. Very interesting. Kind of a strange concept, but I like it. Like a pale pink lipgloss for your nails. I don't think I would do it myself just because I always have to use my Nailtiques treatment or my nails will split and flake into a gnarly mess, and since I always have that clear gloss coat on this would feel a slight bit redundant, but I do like it a lot on you!

    1. Funny you should say that about the pale pink lipgloss for nails - they actually do a lip version too which is next on my list to check out. Go me! I'm finally starting to do the odd beauty thing. It's taken a long time but I'm getting there. My nails are quite fragile actually and have been since I had George. Before that, they were as tough as nails (bad pun not intended). I started using the OPI Nail Envy on them to strengthen them but then fell out of the habit (I get bored easily as well).

If I was better at painting with my left hand, I would be rocking some funky shades.

  7. It's lovely Sue - perfect for a natural healthy looking nail. I'm not a fan of coloured finger nails in the summer time so shall be hunting this out next time I'm in the big schmoke! Have a great weekend - Happy Easter to all the family, Ax

    1. I keep staring at them - it's weird but weird in a good way because I can see clearly how much better my nails look.

Hope you have a great weekend and Easter with the family. Take it easy!

  8. I love subtle nail colors like this and have used a few over time but this one looks really good. I have a couple versions of a similar concept for lips by Benefit, and I really like them. A little color, and some shine...flattering for the makeup minimalist (which is definitely the group I find myself in).

    1. I subscribe to the school of low key makeup (little or nothing) and the same applies to the fingers. However, on the toes - anything goes!

  9. I just wish I had nails worthy of any sort of polish. I am in the city tommorow so just might pop into Debs and give it a go.....it does look really very good on you!! xx

    1. It's because my nails are not up to much these days that I generally don't wear anything. One of them breaks each week so it's rare I get a full set that all are the same length. But I was having a goodish day with them when I did the polish so they look okay here (or else I wouldn't be showing them for love or money!). Just give it a whirl at the makeup counter (doesn't cost after all) and see what you think.

  10. I like it Sue - gives the old nails a bit of 'je ne sais quoi' - hope I spelt that right! I don't have time/can't be bothered to constantly remove and replace nail polish as soon as it chips (I know it's bad since the main theme of my blog is beauty) so I should really opt for something like this rather than chipped nails! Have a great Easter Weekend x

    1. Really? I thought you'd be straight on the case and doing your nails every two days! You being a beauty fiend and all. I'm pretty low maintenance so this is polish is perfect for lazy moos like me.

Have a great Easter weekend too!

  11. Ooh, I really like that one! I hadn't heard of it until you mentioned it in your comment, but that really is neat. Like Nomadic D said, like lip gloss for your nails! I giggled at the Grumps test - my poor boyfriend has lived through my teenage goth phase, my colorful fake hair phase and even some fake dreadlocks (there are no photos, thank god), so I think he is quietly content as long as I don't give those a revival ;)

This is what I'm wearing on my nails right now: http://the-swatchaholic.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/models-own-beetlejuice-aqua-violet_01.jpg

I can't stop staring at my hands!

    1. It's such a perfect description though isn't it? Lip gloss for the nails. I hadn't thought of it like that but it just makes sense. I was thinking what a sheltered sartorial upbringing I've had compared to yourself - I never really experimented that much - the wackiest I got was over the knee socks with docs.

And guess what - I actually have that Models Own varnish ... but it only goes on the toes. If it was on my finger nails I would be staring at them all the time (like you are) - I just know I would catch flashes of the colour all the time and be going "what's that???".

  12. I'll be giving that a try then Sue, love the idea, just polish doesn't last long on my nails either unless it's done by a professional using those gel paints. x

    1. I daren't use the gel paints - they would kill my nails out right when they need to be removed. And you know what a stickler I am for a neat paint job - though I have seen your nails and you are right, your manicurist is good.

  13. Oh I've been wondering what that looks like on. Sometimes it's nice to take a break from coloured nails all the time, but I find it really difficult to look at my bare nails!

    1. I am the opposite to you - I find it difficult to look at nails which are painted - they're too distracting and sometimes the polish feels a bit strange on - a little heavy (or maybe it's just me putting it on a bit heavy).

This is just a nice change for my rather dull and uninteresting nails. You should try it - it's just enough but not over the top.

Thank you so much for the mention , I appreciated that a lot :) - I enjoy reading your blog too, it always makes me smile.

  17. My pleasure Emily-Jane - I love reading your blog and finding out what to look out for. The polish is quite pale on me on the photos but I can layer the colour if I like to add a little more rosiness to it. But it will probably show up more against someone with a paler skin tone as well.

You must do some pics when you get yours :o)

    1. Which of course means I have to go and stare at your nails on your blog. They look fine to me but if you want something to perk them up, I think this might just do the trick. One day, I will wear a proper colour on my nails for more than 5 minutes. One day ....

  20. I'm just like you. I never ever put anything on my fingernails because the varnish just wears off within a day. I'll take a look at Dior nail color. There's a Dior counter an easy 5 min stroll from my place.

  21. Sometimes, every once in a looong while I put color on my nails but 99,9% of the time, it's clear polish. The pics are quite convincing. Just like you, I prefer clean, smooth nails with a bit of shine... And I have a discount at Sephora.... Do the maths! Haha!

    1. Jody, you did not see the state of my hands before I did this post. I spent the whole morning "cosmetically" improving my hands with a gallon of handcream. The Grumps can confirm that this is the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth. I have hands like sandpaper 99% of the time.
