A Tale of Two Tops

Wednesday 8 August 2012

Once upon a time there was a princess called Sue who had an Aubin & Wills Lookbook. Every day (well not every day but fairly often) she would look at the book and sigh over the lovely little Annaside top that she had seen in it.  Princess Sue knew that if she had this top, she would look cool, hip and yet romantic and her life would be complete.

Aubin Wills Annaside Top
Makes you cool, hip and yet romantic ....

Having decided to wait till her birthday for her birthday gold coins to arrive meant there was only a size 8 left when Princess Sue went to order but undeterred, she ordered it on the off chance that it would fit.  It arrived but alas it didn't fit.  What was she to do???

Down but not broken, Princess Sue set out on a her trusty steed (car) called Volvo on a mission to track down an equally lovely top which would make her hip, cool and yet romantic looking.  She looked high and low on the High Street until she eventually came across the Kingdom of Zara where she happened upon a little cream number which showed great promise and had suitable leanings towards the romantic side. Princess Sue delved into her bag of gold coins (okay so she handed over the credit card - same difference) and returned to her castle to admire and appreciate her new treasure.

Princess Sue was delighted with her new cream top which was in a lovely soft cotton and had some pleasing applique detail around the neckline.

Some pleasing applique detail to the neckline.

She decided she was going to rock this new top in a 70's kind of way with her Isabel Marant inspired H&M denim skirt and Carvela Krimble sandals (again).

Peace and love to all.

Good picture of the camera eh?

I'm sure my sisters had something like this originally.

She then summoned her kingdom to sing a 70's ditty along with her to celebrate her joy :

THE NEW SEEKERS
"I'd Like To Teach The World To Sing"
(Roquel Davis, Roger John Reginald Greenaway, Roger F. Cook and William M. Backer)

I'd like to build the world a home
And furnish it with love
Grow apple trees and honey bees
And snow-white turtle doves

I'd like to teach the world to sing
In perfect harmony
I'd like to hold it in my arms
And keep it company

I'd like to see the world for once
All standing hand in hand
And hear them echo through the hills
Ah, peace throughout the land

(That's the song I hear)
I'd like to teach the world to sing
(That the world sings today)
In perfect harmony

I'd like to teach the world to sing
In perfect harmony

I'd like to build the world a home
And furnish it with love
Grow apple trees and honey bees
And snow-white turtle doves

But the tale does not end here as the title does say "A Tale of Two Tops".

Whilst browsing around the Net a Porter site for fun one evening, Princess Sue made the discovery that Aubins & Wills were stocked on their site and they had (cue trumpet fanfare as befits this tale) ...da da dahh...... the Annaside top in her size!

So the DHL Knight rode up and handed over the pretty black bowed box that came from the Kingdom of Net a Porter and in it was the lost treasure of the Annaside top.

The End.

We all love a happy ending don't we?  Actually it's not the end as I'd really like you all to see how to really rock the Annaside top.  I've included a couple of photos from Lapin de Lune's blog for you to see it as it should be worn by someone who I personally think wears it well.

Aubin & Wills should have just hired her don't you think?

Lapin de Lune - if you're reeling in shock at being featured.  Sorry.  Please forgive me.

  • Please note - this story is based on a true story and any likeness to any characters you know are wholly intentional.
  • Apologies also if you find yourself humming this dratted song for the rest of the day.
  • 3 weeks with the kids on holiday and you start going a bit mad.
  • And I know this post is just weird and disjointed but that's just the way I roll.

  1. The Zara top and denim skirt look really good on you. Glad you tracked the Aubin and Wills version down eventually. The white top / denim look works well for you so in my book that makes it a sensible purchase! x

    1. It was fun to try and find something to wear with the skirt - it's so obviously 70's inspired that you can't fight it but I just really liked it when I saw it. And you can't go wrong with a cute cotton top can you?

  2. I know what you mean, I was obsessed with finding that kind of top, and then bought four similar in France. I think I like the one you bought even more and especially with that fantastic denim skirt, I'd like to teach the world to sing....

    1. Do you know - you had me running around for quite some time googling purple beach kaftans with pom poms? You threw down the gauntlet and I gallantly accepted the challenge and failed.....

I've been singing that dratted song for days. But I secretly like it .... altogether now ... grow apple trees and honey bees and snow white turtle doves ....

  3. I get crazy obsessions like this as well...was very upset about a certain Muji dress being sold out in my size. But when I located it in another colour in my size, I realised it didn't fit me well either. Felt a bit silly about getting all excited in the first place.

I like the teaming of the white blouse with the denim skirt.

    1. Part of it is the thrill of the chase ....

But yes - I get a bit psycho about getting something especially when it says it's sold out in your size and then I'm on the phone tracking down. I become "Sue - the Bounty Hunter".

    1. They're great these cotton tops - dressy enough to not have to do anything else with them.

Yes ... I am slowly being ground down by the kids .... but September is not far away now.... I nearly called in to the chemist's the other day for earplugs (drugs to numb the pain was a step too far I felt).

  5. Oh my, haha! Before I had even scrolled down to find my headless body at the bottom of the post I had already yelped with delight, for I made a post which included this blouse earlier in the evening! I am so glad that you managed to locate one, because I truly understand that feeling, when you hover around waiting for something to turn up, with barely any hope left over.
And I am extremely flattered that you think I wear it well! If only my pics weren't so frequently overexposed.

But but but! Your featured outfit is absolutely perfect - the Zara blouse, whilst different to the A&W's version is exquisite in it's own right, I really love the fit and detailing. I'm also incredibly fond of the skirt, which you featured a while ago, I think? Great length too - a rarity! Love this to bits! x

    1. I'm pleased you're flattered rather than the reverse - sometimes you don't know how people will take to being featured. The Annaside top is a delight and I didn't wear it straight away (just admired it for a while and smiled a contented smile to myself) as I was too scared I might ruin it and then eventually I did and got pizza tomato sauce down it and I was beside myself. You only have to ask the Grumps - I was in major meltdown and a snappy monster trying desperately to remove the stain. Much googling and a gentle hand and the tiniest of well diluted bleach and an artist's paintbrush for application and we are all happy again.

The skirt is still available on the H&M website and comes up a little small. I went for a size 12 instead of a size 10 which I thought would automatically fit me but didn't. Mine's a little loose (not much) but I refused to wear it pulling and straining at the buttons. It is a good length for the UK where I feel I need to maintain my decency at the school gates. I have an old French Connection denim skirt for abroad which is a few inches shorter.

And your latest post - oh my, oh my, oh my! I would wear them all!

    2. Thankyou!
As for H&M skirts, I always have to size up a couple, not just one - often find some really well made pencil style skirts in there, too. Always worth a look!

Gauging whether something would be acceptable for school gates is a good measure actually!
