Bag Lady Again

Tuesday, 6 October 2015

Were you all ready for the 5p carrier bag charge which came in to force in England yesterday? I was! (insert smug face emoji here).

Those orange and yellow triangles are my carrier bags all folded up and I had a handful of these stashed away in my bag ready and waiting.

I found this little tutorial one early morning when I couldn't sleep and I was in Marie Kondo mode. It was about folding carrier bags so they take up less space. In real Marie Kondo terms, you'd bin the lot but you could take the other Marie Kondo stance and fold anything and everything. I chose to fold them up. How?

Hours of fun there. Or lost.

  1. Oh you are so creative! I have one bag with all other bags shoved inside!
I do online food delivery and they wanted to add 40p to my shop for bags. I said 'no thanks' and now it's just going to arrive in a crate and take me 4 x as long to unload. Can't imagine the driver will be happy waiting!

I do think it's a good thing though.

    1. I don't actually mind the charge and in quite a number of cases, the costs/charges go to a charity and it will also stop me hoarding carrier bags. I think I had the equivalent of two bin liners full of plastic bags and I did spend a bit of time folding some of them and wittled it right down (in terms of storage space only). I have taken to throwing a couple in my handbag though for the just incase moments.

  2. You are a genius Sue! I have a waste paper basket filled to the brim with carrier bags.......guess what I'm going to be doing for the next few hours! Love this idea! I do carry my own totes for shopping, just wish I could get the other half to do the same....then we wouldn't have the need to fold the bags! xx

    1. Not really - this is what happens when I can't sleep and I go on Pinterest! I have a canvas bag full of those 10p reusable carriers and I throw a smattering of these triangles in for good measure now. Thing is, I've just got to remember to take the main bag with me when I go shopping - I'm forever leaving it in the back of the car.

    1. I know I know. I did a bin liner's worth and gave a load over to my mum (who also hoards them).

    1. I have an assortment but this is a good way of managing the ones you invariably end up with. And the triangles are teeny weeny!

  6. Ha, this is what we used to do with our crisps packets at school! ..now to start on the plastic bags. And of course I was not ready..decided to do the weekly shop on a whim the day it started (a million 5p bags later I returned from Waitrose) both the lady on the till and I were getting more embarrassed the more bags I had to pay for..lesson learnt..its going to be triangle bags all the way from now on!! xx

    1. You are way ahead of me then - you did it with crisp packets?? My hubs when he does the shop will forget the bags, I just know it and then he will be all huffy at the till. Good thing it's me who does the shop mainly.

  7. I saw a You tube video showing you how to do that ! my Sister got charged for a tiny bag in a card shop! I have had my own shopping bags in the car for ages but this is ideal to pop in even the smallest of bags for that impulse buy. x Dawn

    1. I have a combination of both but like you say, the odd triangle popped in your bag will really come in handy.

  8. Hi, I've never commented before, but just had to come back and say - I have just cleared out a mountain of plastic bags and most of them have become triangles! This is on a par with Marie Kondo's t-shirt folding method - thanks!

    1. It's silly addictive isn't it? I find myself automatically folding them back up as soon as I've unloaded a shop now.

  9. So now I have a lovely little collection of folded bags, but my only problem is that they keep falling out of the Ikea placcy bag storage thing we have on the wall!
