WIWLW - What I Wore Last Week

Monday, 9 March 2015

Hmmm. Apologies first but this is not going to be that exciting and you will have seen some of these outfits before but now you will understand why I seem to be posting more last week than what I would normally. I don't often do a weekly round up (like never) but I know a lot of people do, so I thought it would make a good idea for a blog post for me and to see if I have deduced anything by the end of it. So the photos are a bit hodge podge but here goes ....

Saturday.

I'll start off on a Saturday shall I? Saturday 28th Feb actually. The day of the annual bloggy meet with some lovely friends and a chance to stay over in London. I took this pic at home a couple of days before the Saturday when I was trying to decide what to wear.

I said it last year and I'll say it again. If in doubt - wear black. So I did with the Uniqlo black silk shirt, an H&M blazer, black jeans and white Converse. Given all the love for Adidas within the group, I thought it might be a good idea to lay off them that day, so Cons it was. Great idea until it rained in the evening as Marlene and I stomped our way through London looking for a bowl of noodles. Yup, that's the oriental noodle eating blood rising to the fore there! And a special mention for the Uniqlo silk shirt which held up well with minimal creasing - not bad for nearly 15 hours wear including travelling time.

Anyway, thank you Marlene for helping me take my pic in our usual alleyway err ... I mean courtyard ;o)

Oh yes, that pic above. That's the official pic ;o)  This is the unofficial one where I photobombed Marlene's attempts to take a pic of an interesting building.

As you can tell. I don't get out much.

Sunday

So I had some time to kill on the Sunday morning before breakfast so I played with the timer function on the camera and made the most of the moody greys of the hotel room. Depending on your outlook on life - this is actually soft moody arty greys or this is a prison cell with really nice white bedlinen. I popped on a Toast black cotton jumper which I nabbed for £15 last year in one of their epic sales down from around £100.  Who loves a bargain? I do :o))))  Everything else, I kept the same from the day before.

Monday.

Monday was the day it sleeted, it rained, it beamed temporary beams of sunshine and then it all went back to pot again. Monday was the day I was supposed to be heading to York for a lunch date with friends. It didn't happen. We made it to an indoor shopping centre as basically it was sleeting as we headed out of the door and none of us fancied doing a cold & wet cobble wobble down the Shambles. The parka was protection from the elements. The rest was for shopping comfort and practicality. And the Baxters had been for a quick wash and spin on the Sunday evening. They're earning their keep.

Tuesday.

My birthday. I dressed for warmth whilst I was at home during the day. I quite often wear the ULD jackets as a throw on in the house - they are just so comfortable and light. And there was a bit of colour in the form of the red plaid shirt. Hoorah! And a fleece coat which isn't really a fleece. Honest.

And a change in the evening for an early burger date at Byrons with my boys. Yep, that's a Lulu & Co Rainbow jumper that I'm sporting below. I found another one and worked some magic on it and I lowered my standards by a fraction - I just love this rainbow jumper. It's fun!

Matalan Fur Coat, Vintage Leather Clutch, Lulu & Co Jumper, Topshop Baxters, Next Skate Pumps

My concession to dressing up was the fur coat but I changed to the parka at the last minute as I realised I was having a walk across town and it was freezing! It was 4 degrees with a chill factor which felt like minus 4. I zipped up and set off - I am indeed a creature of comfort and practicality. I did put on a bit of lippy on though :)

Oh yes - I was a bit bored of the usual look to the left poses so I threw some different shapes. And besides I was happy as I wasn't cooking! Yippee!

Wednesday.

I started off the school run with a parka on and changed to the Del Boy coat for the supermarket run as  it's a bit lighter and a little bit less industrial. My parka gets a lot of action so sometimes I try to give it a rest if I'm going somewhere by car. I wore a  tried and tested formula of my favourite tan and black stripe Aubin & Wills jumper with black jeans. I did change the Topshop Baxter jeans for the H&M destroyed jeans today.

Thursday.

Blooming eck it was cold. It didn't look it though when I got dressed and I pulled out an old khaki parka from yesteryear. The furry hood gives the illusion of warmth - it is a very good illusion. Brrr. And I have blue jeans on for a change as I thought I was overdoing the black. And then I realised I was wearing a black jumper anyway. Hmm.

Primark Parka, H&M Cashmere jumper, Zara Jeans, Adidas Stan Smiths

And because I was doing housey stuff - I got changed. Into some slobs. This is what I often do when I get in from the school run in the mornings. Comfort first and I would also hate to ruin any good clothes with bleach or anything.

Primark scarf, Aubin & Wills ex-hoodie (I chopped the hood off), H&M Joggers, Kirkland Uggy Slippers

Thing is, I forgot the time in the afternoon and had to leg it out of the house for the school run without getting changed back in to civvies. So Zara parka on, Stan Smiths on. And off I went. I just kept a low profile. Can I say about my joggers - these are the boys joggers from H&M I got a few years back. They keep getting shorter and shorter on me but can we just pretend that they are supposed to look like this eh? What's an inch or two between friends? And I'm giving myself a bonus point for the fact that I did at least co-ordinate.

Friday.

Having a flick through Instagram, I spotted Hollie in her Mango jacket from a couple of years back. So out my Mango jacket came. This was bought in 2012 and seemed to be the must have Mango jacket for all bloggers. I haven't worn it as much in the last year or so but I guess that's the way the coat dice rolls sometimes and there are always new coat favourites vying for attention. The Topshop Baxters went back on along with a grey cashmere Gap jumper from 2013. This has been my go to jumper for the last two winters. It's a plain grey crew neck which doesn't irritate or give me double chins like all the other high neck ones do and it's just soft, light and comfortable. A slightly thicker cashmere than the Uniqlo ones - it's a winner. And the grey felted skate pumps again. If any of you are beagle eyed enough, you will have noticed that I have gone back to the Next version of these pumps after having a dabble with the ASOS Dialog pair. The ASOS ones were just too big and cumbersome on me whereas these are just perfect. See - the grass is not always greener!

Mango Jacket, Gap Cashmere jumper, Topshop Baxter Jeans, Next Skate Pumps, Longchamp Tote/Toast Bag

And two bags in action here but in the same colour way (I am consistent in my likes). The first small one is the Toast bag and I tend to use this for school runs where I need to pop in a packet of tissues, a phone and my keys. There's not a lot else which will fit in. And then a change to the Longchamp tote for a quick visit to the shops. The Longchamp hasn't been used for a while but that's more because I prefer a messenger strap on my bags.

So thats it really. But let's see what I have deduced from my round up ....

  • I wear jeans. A lot. All the time actually.
  • I do wear colour - I just happen to wear muted sludge colours.
  • I wore something black every day.
  • I wear flat shoes.
  • I don't like being cold.
  • I don't wear much jewellery. Well only when I remember.
  • I wear mainly black or grey jeans at this time of the year. Black = winter. Blue = summer.
  • I regress to a childlike state when I wear rainbows on my chest.
  • I find it hard to look the camera straight on unless I'm larking around.
  • I nearly always look to the left so my good side must be my right side.
  • I didn't wear anything pretty or feminine this week.
  • I don't do fashion fashion though I love reading and looking at it.
  • I don't do much in the way of patterns.
  • I am hugely boring and practical in my clothes choices aka I wear a lot of core basics.
  • I sometimes do the school run in my joggy bots. It's no biggie.

The WIWLW idea has basically turned out to be a round up of me in jeans. But we all knew that anyway didn't we? Which is why I don't post what I wear most days. I see a lot more photo worthy pictures on Instagram and these are from people who don't even blog. It's all going on out there in Instagram and Blog world but not in my wardrobe. But it has been an interesting exercise. I might do it again .... in two years time ..... if I'm still blogging.

  1. I can't be the only one who wants to see what you wear every day Sue?! I don't care if you live in black jeans...so do I most of the time! I still love to see what you are styling them with! xx

    1. No black jeans today Michelle - the sun came out! And I started packing away some of the big jumpers - I may be a little premature but I am rather over knitwear. And thanks for the vote of confidence - I can't take a picture every day - it's hard work! And honestly, I bore myself.

  3. Love your photobombing picture, Sue! You look just like one of your sons on it, lol!
Fabulous post, and most of your outfit choices are right up my street! I also adore my silk Uniqlo shirts and ULD jacket and have the same cashmere jumpers (Gap & H&M) that I live in.
Hope you don't stop blogging in 2 (or 3, or..) years time :) Best, Irina x

    1. I couldn't resist the photobombing. Just goes to prove that I am a regular gal.

And it sounds like we have much of the same in our wardrobes but hey it all works (at least it does for me) and I'm comfortable. Sometimes I'm too comfortable actually :o/

And I'll try to keep up the blogging - it won't be as regular as last week believe me. That was hard work.

  4. Your outerwear game is so strong. You make me want an Oscar the Grouch coat.

Btw thought of you this weekend too--with the Zara distressed jeans. I pulled out my lighter jeans and thought, Sue would be proud of me for switching it up today :)

Last note--are you wearing socks in these? How do you deal with bare ankles? -eek-

    1. An Oscar the Grouch coat! I just had to google him and you are spot on (except I'm navy and he's green). And yes the outerwear game is strong - because you can hide a lot of sins underneath a coat.

And yes - I always think you look really nice in the boyfriend jeans - a more relaxed vibe which really suits you actually. I am proud of you Special K.

And I have fleecy soles in all my flat trainer/pump shoes. I struggle so much with the small pop sock things - none that I have tried really do the job and I get frustrated and take them off. It has been warming up though here in the UK.

  5. I didn't realise that was the Uniglo shirt Sue. Very impressed it held up so well. Glad I'm not the only one who feels the cold. Love the red plaid shirt on you xx

    1. The Uniqlo shirts really do hold up well. I've only ever worn it for the odd hour/couple of hours before and this is the first time it's gone in for the long haul. It did good! And the plaid shirt is the brightest thing I wore all week isn't it? But I really like it - it's a colour without being in your face.

  7. I'm very impressed by your coat collection! I blame the mountain but just this sale season I've bought 2 new coats and 3 jackets (60% of which furry). I still buy more shoes than anything but it's safe to say I'm becoming a shoes AND coats girl! And I wear jeans, basics and flats 99% of the time too btw...People do have lives, right?

    1. I do love coats and I think that's why I was getting all antsy last year not being able to find a nice winter coat. The Topshop one is nice but it doesn't wear well - I know as I've seen people in the street in it and it looks past it's best - it kind of rubs up so I have to be careful that I don't wear it for long periods and that I don't have bags rubbing the sides of it. Therefore it's not a go to coat.

But ultimately I am a shoe girl ... but I'm running out of room. I need to cull.

  8. I hope you've framed that photobombing shot? It's just brilliant! And now I'm hankering after one of those Uniqlo thin down jackets (don't know technical name) I blame you!!!

    1. Helen, with all that jet setting you do - you need a ULD jacket. They just make that little bit of difference and fold up so small - perfect for flights. Get one, get one!

  9. Looking back on my outfit posts of recent, very few have been normal day to day (mainly because I think I look boring and nobody will get excited) however, I have really enjoyed looking through your weekly outfits, not that yours are boring Sue, but they are just normal and you really can not beat seeing what everybody else really wears day to day. I particularly like the last outfit, I really like that Mango coat and of course your Longchamp tote. You are serious coat collector aren't you? And I am happy you kept that rainbow jumper, you look happy wearing it too!. x

    1. It's strange isn't it but I also really enjoy looking at what people really wear. Not the dressed up posts but more the "this is what I popped on" type of thing. Just because I identify with it a little more. I do like the dressed up ones as it gives me a lot of inspiration and ideas but ultimately, I dress for practicality and comfort. I am just a regular school run mum ... who likes buying clothes.

And I'm glad I got another Lulu & Co jumper. I did really like it and I needed a little fun injection in to the wardrobe.

    1. And why not indeed. I probably stole it from someone else but I have no idea who. It started off as a WIWTW (What I wore this week) but I over ran so I had to change it to WIWLW. I am rubbish.

  11. But I like seeing what you wear every day! I get a bit annoyed when 'school run mums' are criticised for being unoriginal because the reality of many women's lives is that warm coats and comfortable shoes are the most practical option given their daily routine. Believe me, I'd love to rock up at the school gates in a tulle skirt and rockstuds, but it's never going to happen! My weekly outfit round up is the most viewed post every week, but I'm certainly not reinventing the wheel with anything I wear. I think people just like to see how others work the mum uniform! I'd love to see more of these posts from you - I reckon you could make a bin bag look cool ;-) xx

    1. Thank you Becky. I do know what you mean - real life does take precedence at the end of the day and I don't have to get dressed up for work so that does restrict the wardrobe a little and it gets to the point where you feel like you're putting on a bit of show if you even think about putting on a pair of heels for the playground. It just feels like hard work and I'm one of those who likes to blend in a little. And it's interesting to note that you're roundup is your most popular post - it's the one I look forward to the most.

You know what suits you and you wear it so well. I'd live in jeans every day given the choice too, but needs must for work! Please so more of these! Lynne xx

    1. I think you have to work with what goes with your lifestyle. I used to work and my wardrobe was a different ballgame but over the last few years, I've fully embraced the "casual" element. I remember I used to get dressed for work each day wishing I could wear jeans. Well that wish came true.

And you're very good at doing a photo a day Lynne - I just forget or I go off and do stuff and then it's too late in the day and I give up. But I might try and do another one when the warmer weather hits - at the moment, it's Sue in a coat and jeans, Sue in another coat and jeans and so on.

  15. Well I've enjoyed having a nosey at WYWLW Sue! I think I have rather a lot in common with you - although you buy 'proper' items and I just pick up bits from Meadowhall! If I didn't have to smarten up a little for work I'd be in jeans all week too! x

    1. I think you like to dress for comfort and ease where possible. I don't like too many layers, I don't like jewellery banging around on me or scarves getting in my way - so that doesn't leave me with a lot does it? However, I am fully embracing sweatshirts this year. I might do a week of sweatshirts soon before we hit full summer!
