Chanel Elixir 589

Wednesday 4 September 2013

I had a bit of time to kill whilst I was waiting for the Grumps and found myself playing on the Chanel counter. There was a new pink nail shade which caught my eye. Elixir. I painted my little finger nail with it and was smitten. But I walked away.

Why? I don't wear pink polish. I have a couple of pink shades and I invariably try with them but no sooner have I painstakingly painted my toes pink, I find myself taking the colour off a couple of hours later. Pink toes are a bit alien (to me).

To cut a long story short, Elixir possessed me and I possessed it and it ended up on my toes.  I needed to get this pink thing out of my system and I thought Elixir was the one to take me to the pink side. And credit where credit's dues, it has been on my toes for four days and counting. That's a record. But I don't know how much longer it will stay on before I return to the dark side. Why? Every time I look down, I do a double take. They don't look like my feet simply because they are pink.

Come back grey toes. I miss you.

So we will try to eek it out a bit longer and work with it. After all, Chanel varnishes are not the cheapest of the bunch so I'm going to get my money's worth. For what it's worth, it's a lovely warm grown up pinky red. Not too saccharine. Goes on a dream - you could get away with one coat depending on how well you apply it because the coverage is really good. Everything you would expect from an excellent nail varnish.

In a nutshell, everything speaks in it's favour except it's PINK!!!

So do you have a colour which you really want to wear but isn't you? Black is my other nemesis colour. Oh and red. And duck egg blue and orange. I should just stick to the grey right?

  1. Looks great on you Sue - more pink (of the Chanel variety anyway) I vote!

    1. I think one Chanel pink is enough. Actually two. I forgot, I was bought Chanel's Rose Confidential for a birthday present the other year. I really struggle with that one too and again, it's not a sugary pink or anything. On the contrary it's really nice. But not on me.

      Did you get your pink?

  2. It is a lovely colour! I have an Essie polish called Watermelon that is similar. I have an obsession with the colour watermelon at the moment. I like it - I wear a lot of grey and black and grey so I like colour on my toes and hands ! It looks good with the sandals.

    1. I think this colour could be described as a bit raspberry sorbet? Or a pale watermelon (one of those water melons which are not sweet enough). Pink heading in to red. I wear quite sombre colours too but I feel this colour on my toes shouts a little too much for me. But I'm heading back to the comfort of the grey very soon.

  3. It's a good un Sue. You need to get it on your fingers too and just go the whole 'pink' hog! I dare you! I just wear alsorts as I fancy - as you know!

    1. You really do wear all sorts. A lot of your colours scare me actually. If I'd put the pink on my hands, I wouldn't get any work done - I'd be staring at my fingers all the time. Little alien fingers tapping away on the keyboard ...

  4. i'm into really loud and obnoxious colors for manis and pedis. not sure why, especially given how subdued the rest of my wardrobe usually is. but we need an outlet for that Absolutely Fabulous side to us, eh?? your hot pink pedi looks great on you!!

    1. Really? Now I wouldn't have thought that of you. I would have thought you'd have been a Rouge Noir or Particuliere in Chanel colours.

And the pink toes - it's throwing my whole wardrobe out. It doesn't go with anything!

  5. It looks lovely ... but like you I can't do pink! Maybe it's because I have a daughter so I've been 'pinked out' over the years. Mind you, I can't do duck egg blue or red or orange or anything other than very dark purple or grey on my toe nails. No idea why? But wow! you do a REALLY GOOD pedicure :)

    1. There are times when I am grateful that I have boys. I have never had to do the pink thing. Phew.

  6. It's kind of a pink but kind of a peony-meets-watermelon kind of pink so really it's almost red. so if you look at it that way, you have red toes that are slightly pink? for what it's worth, i love the colour - it's really quite a unique shade!

i will put anything on though I've noticed that white polish makes my toes look darker/dirtier mostly because they actually are (from wearing thongs etc) compared to the rest of me. always go back to the same few - blacks / greys / nudes - and the occasional bright shocking neon coral / red.

    1. Oh good call Stephanie. Except I'm rubbish with red toes as well. I went to the Chanel counter with the intention of getting Dragon. If I'm going to do a red, that's my red. I tried that on along with the Elixir and Elixir won. I think there was a part of me that wanted to break out of the grey rut and doing the pink has just cemented my love of the grey. You live and learn.

And white polish - that's extreme but yes, it's one of those colours which can make your feet look dirty depending on your skin tone. I actually know which colours suit me but sometimes you just have to try something else even if i's a little wrong for you.

  7. I love this pink nail polish colour! I often find I'm much more willing to try unusual colours on my toes than I am on my fingers. I am also a massive fan of grey nails! xx

    1. I never do colours on my hands - I can't do a neat enough job and I know that coloured nails would simply be too distracting. But toes - I am willing to try any colour - how long I keep them on is another matter.

  8. I mostly stick to classics, I like black, always red, both dark & bright and i've taken a liking to dark navy. I cant do pink either, once its on I cant wait to get it off it feels too Barbie. The chanel shade is nice, I like - a kind of pink / red cross breed - totally workable ;) x

    1. Ooh black. I like the impact it makes when it's done right and in a non goth way. But not on me - I find it too strong and harsh a colour. However, a shade off black and it's all good hence the fact that I love my graphite grey colours. I just found 3 bottles of one of my favourite grey shades in the Pound shop. Boy I was happy.

  9. I love this color! And I think it's super fun for you to have a bit of girly pink on your toes! My nail polish no-no would be a deep blue. I've always admired it on others but I end up looking like a cadaver. Which is never what I'm going for. Other than that thought, I'll pretty much wear any color. I think...

    1. No no to a deep blue and yes to girly pink. Really? Now I didn't see that one coming. I actually thought you'd go for some of the dark colours. I like navy on toes but I guess that's not the kind of deep blue you're thinking? When you say cadaver - I suddenly get the picture.

    2. I do love the darker colors in general, I especially love my vamp and a nice gunmetal grey and even wear black, but if there's blue in it I just go dead all over. Must be something in my skin undertones. Even solid navy doesn't work for me, I do much better with black. And any of thos edaek colors on my pale toes are a definite no for me. Weird, huh? As for pink, I've done bubble gum and baby pink and magenta and hot pink... I think it sort of always looks slightly ironic on me even if I don't intend for it to. But hey, whatever works. I think that raspberry watermelon on you is beautiful!

  10. I was about to say that it's a proper watermelon, too!! And I love it - a great, make you smile colour. Gorgeous! I wear a pinky greige on my finger nails (Maybelline gel Rose Poudre) but I love a bit of colour on my feet. Lovely purchase. Nice to be bewitched sometimes, no?

    1. I was bewitched! Chanel gets me every time for colours. They put out the most gorgeous colours and always seem to hit the mark doing the perfect reds, the perfect browns and the perfect greys (vertigo and mysterious). I tried the mysterious one and I sort of liked that more than the Elixir but said I needed to do the pink. Put it this way, at least when I need to scratch the pink itch again, I will have a bottle at my disposal.

    1. It's okay Claire. The pink is coming off as soon as I get round to it. BTW I've already done frills and lace this year. But bows - seriously not going there.

  12. The Chanel Counter draws you in doesn't it! Lovely pop of colour. My nemesis colours are black and lavender both make me look drawn and tired (which I usually am) not good colours against my bluey/white skin. I may have to go to the Chanel counter - like a moth to light xx

    1. Such a good description. You are right about the Chanel counter but I only look at their nail varnishes. If it was makeup I don't even know who I would turn to these days.

  13. I tend to steer clear of pink polish but this is more of a red pink which I really like and only one coat appeals to me too. On holiday in the summer I had Chanel Orange Fizz on my toes but it needed two or three coats for an even colour.

    1. I've had good and bad experiences with Chanel varnishes and this was one of those good ones. And I hate varnishes which take 3 coats to get the colour you were lured in to getting. I have a few. Correction, I had a few. I got rid.

  14. I wish I've read this post before heading to the Chanel counter!!!! I would've bought Elixir despite hating pink. Love the color because it's nice and cheerful without looking overly bright.

    1. After doing greys so long. I just fancied a change. This one isn't a true pink. There is a strong red undertone to it which is probably why I liked it. And varnishes are different on different skin tones. I have Rose Confidential which I think you picked up going by one of your recent posts/instagrams but the colour just dies on me. Shame as it's really nice.
