I Don't Want No Scrubs

Wednesday 15 May 2013

I had this absolute thing going for this blouse on the Toast website.

I loved the colour. I loved the sea green, aqua foaminess of it all. They actually call it "light shadow blue". You can sell anything to me if you call it something sufficiently poncey. It was perfect, perfect, perfect. I even liked the quirky flap detailing on the front. I thought it lent it a certain something.

It came, the colour was lovely, the cotton was lovely. The fit was good. The flap was weird. I pulled it this way and that and told myself that the off centre neckline and the flap was all part of the quirky Toast detailing. But in the back of my mind I had my doubts. So what did I do? I went to see the Grumps.

Now where's my gloves and surgical mask?

"What do you think?" I asked.

He looked at the top and he flapped the flap and then he sat back in his chair, folded his arms and said "it's a bit hospital scrubs isn't it?" and proceeded to sing TLC's "I don't want no scrubs" at me.

Love that man. Tell's it like it is. So I thought I'd tell Toast like it is too.

Being helpful.

Did I tell you that they also do it in a lovely blue fabric which is not so scrubs like?

  1. Hi there-yes hubbys can be brutally honest, even if it's not what you want to hear style wise, hehe! He is spot on though and good idea to tell Toast too. Hope you're well and having a good week xx

    1. Yes, he was quite pleased with himself for thinking that one up. But I've been humming that dratted song for days now!

  2. Don't you just love them really. I take it the blue one is now winging it's way to your door ? :)

    1. No it's not. It might if it comes up in the sale but if the dress in the blue fabric comes up in the sale, I'll get that before the blouse. I think. Did I ever say my middle name was fickle?

  3. Ha, ha, brilliant! Go Grumps :) Question ... does the off-centre flap not drive you bananas?

    1. Errr yup. But I've scratched the itch and it's out of my consciousness now. Phew. Actually I've scratched a lot of itches this week and I'm much happier bunny now. But still loads of things in my shopping consciousness still to be scratched. Sounds like I have fleas doesn't it? Shopping fleas, I hasten to add.

  4. Love the color but I think it would drive me nuts with the pleat - what's it like tucked in so it's 'held' in place? Too formal?

    1. Colour is good, style I've conceded is bad. I'm not good at tucking in - reminds me of when I was at work and I had a vest top on under a cardigan which kept riding up and the gentleman next to me said "why don't you tuck it in" and I thought to myself "that would be too sensible".

  6. LOL your husband sounds hilarious! I have to agree though, it does feel a little like scrubs. Good thing for returns policies :)

    1. I love returns policies which is probably why I only shop in the UK and daren't venture onto the US sites. That would be far too much faff with all the returns I do.

Good thing your Zara jacket worked out! It looks great on you.

  7. Haha, my son was born really REALLY fast and so my husband had quite a hands on role. He got a little messy and so the hospital gave him some scrubs to wear to go home etc. The scrubs top is honestly the best and most comfortable PJ top ever. I wear it all the time and the husband and I fight over it! Maybe you could use the top for that :)?

Looks gorgeous but I have to say I agree with your husband a little!

    1. I'm not paying that much money for a top to wear to bed! But gah - I can't believe the hubs got it spot on for once. I very rarely ask him for an opinion because I get daft answers or answers I don't want to hear ... or just truthful ones. But this is coming from the man who used to match his socks to his shirts.

    2. Haha no-only free shirts are acceptable bed wear unless you're going down the sexy slip thing. I just had my hair coloured (lighter for summer( and the husbands response 'wow, they made it look just like it did before'. Er. Truthful but not exactly what I wanted to hear :(

  8. Haha! It looks good on you....but now you mention it, yes the hubs did have a point. Hope you get on better with the other colour. Love the pic of your returns note :-)

    1. Well usually I don't bother to write much but it kind of tickled me so I thought I'd let the nice people at Toast have a laugh too. I don't think I'm going to bother with the other colour - the flap would drive me bonkers.

  9. Now I've got that TLC tune in my head Sue! Your 'Grumps' has a way with words doesn't he but at least he tells you fair and square - most of the time my husband just says what he 'thinks' I want to hear! :)

    1. Nah - I've got one of those who tells you it like it is even if it's not what you want to hear but it's okay - better to have the truth than go out and look weird and self delusional :o)

  10. Hahaha! That is hilarious. That color IS very scrubs-y, so it was probably best to return it. I'm sure the blue will be lovely, though!

    1. I've given up with this top - I don't think I can deal with the flap even though that's the main detail. I'll just have to find something else in "light shadow blue" to scratch that itch I think.

  11. Hahaha..... I'd love to see the expression on the person's face that's handling returns!! Your handwriting is beautiful! Okay, let's get back to the topic. I love mint or slightly aqua green provided the color's not muted too.

    1. That's my scrawly writing - I actually have two types of handwriting. I did the scrawly one when I got bored of little Miss Neatness when I was young and wanted a change.

This mint, aqua, sea foam, light shadow blue thing is proving elusive. Not come across much of it on my travels so far. It has to be the perfect shade.

  12. Some men have great fashion vision, and some men are totally blind! A colleague once told me, she decided to surprise her husband with her new "sexy" dress. As she welcomed him through the door saying 'ta-da' "what do you think"?.....his reply was, "have you had your hair cut"??!! At least your 'Grumps' notices and gives you a valid opinion!xx

    1. I'm not sure about great fashion vision - the Grumps is actually a bit of a traditionalist. He's one of those who thinks if you wear a black dress, you put on black shoes. He found it strange years ago when I was wearing a pair of green Gina's with a black dress - got him all confused. But sometimes, just sometimes, he knows what he's on about. (Don't you Grumps?).

  13. I've never bought anything from them before and this blouse isn't 'enabling' me :-) Sue you can make anything look good in your own way but I just don't know what to make of this blouse lol!

Your Grumps is truly a rare breed who can actually articulate a valid critique on a fashion garment! Mine is the blind type - 'you look beautiful', 'thank you...this is different, it's shorter/longer/looser/tighter/lower/higher/see through/thicker etc, what do you think?', 'oh but you always look beautiful!' I'm grateful but aarghh!

    1. It's quite okay - I didn't know what to make of it either. I had high hopes but it just didn't work. For someone who likes quite plain things, it was a wonky neckline and a flap too much.

And your hubs is not blind - he just knows how to keep in your good books.

  15. What an hilarious hubby you have! Honestly I didn't see the scrub vibe until you shared his statement and then it was all I could see! Ha, mind tricks...
I've been a long time subscriber of Toast. Back in the day, I even used to get their paper catalogue but I never ordered from them even if on pictures there's always something that pleases the eyes: I'm just not good at (long) distance shopping.

    1. Their catalogues and photos are stunning. The wearing of their clothes doesn't always translate in real life. Designed for tall people really who can make sack shapes look good rather than sack (like me). I read in a newspaper article some years back about fashion tribes and whether you were a "Boden" or a "Toast" kind of person. My look is more Boden but I want to be Toast. Ah well.

  17. I'm afraid I agree with your hubby too. It is rather scrubs like. And scrubs come in lots of colours so I'm not even sure a colour change would help. :-(
